Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 — The Rules of Survival

Elena didn't sleep.

She tried.

Lying on a bed too soft, in a room too perfect, inside a place that didn't belong to her.

But every sound—

Every shadow—

Every thought—

Kept her awake.

They're going to come looking for you.

Adrian's voice echoed in her head.

Over and over again.

By morning, she gave up.

Elena stepped out of the room quietly.

The hallway was empty.

Silent.

Controlled.

Just like everything else in this house.

She walked.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Taking in details.

Doors.

Corners.

Cameras.

Exits.

If she was stuck here—

She wasn't staying blind.

"Planning an escape?"

She froze.

Of course.

Elena turned slightly.

Adrian was leaning against the wall behind her.

Arms crossed.

Watching.

"How long have you been there?" she asked.

"Long enough."

She exhaled.

Annoyed.

"But not long enough to stop me."

A faint smirk.

Barely there.

"You're not leaving."

"Still going to try."

Their eyes met.

Challenge again.

Adrian pushed himself off the wall.

Walking toward her slowly.

Measured.

"You're thinking like this is a place you can outmaneuver," he said.

Elena didn't move.

"Isn't it?"

A pause.

Then—

"No."

He stopped in front of her.

Close again.

Always close.

"This isn't a game you understand yet."

Her jaw tightened.

"Then explain it."

Silence.

For a second—

He just looked at her.

Like he was deciding something.

Then—

"Fine."

"Rule one," Adrian said.

"Trust no one."

Elena raised a brow.

"Original."

"I'm not joking."

Something in his tone shifted.

Slightly darker.

"Everyone in this world has a price," he continued. "Money. Power. Fear."

"And you?" she asked.

A pause.

"I don't."

She almost laughed.

"Everyone says that."

Adrian didn't react.

Which somehow made it worse.

"Rule two," he went on.

"Information is leverage."

Elena crossed her arms.

"That one I agree with."

"Good," he said. "Because that's the only reason you're still here."

There it was.

Truth again.

Cold.

Direct.

"Rule three," Adrian said quietly.

This time—

He stepped even closer.

"Stay alive."

Elena frowned.

"That's not a rule. That's basic instinct."

"Not here."

Silence.

"Here," Adrian continued, his voice lower now,

"people die for less than what you know."

The air shifted.

Heavier.

Elena felt it.

That line again.

Between normal—

And whatever this was.

"So what?" she said, forcing her voice steady.

"I just follow your rules and survive?"

A pause.

"Yes."

"Not happening."

Of course she said that.

Adrian almost expected it.

"You don't get it yet," he said.

Elena stepped forward this time.

Closing the gap herself.

"Then make me understand."

For a second—

Everything stopped.

No movement.

No sound.

Just—

Them.

Adrian's gaze dropped briefly.

Then back to her eyes.

"You're not a player in this," he said.

"You're a target."

That hit.

Harder than anything before.

Elena's expression shifted.

Just slightly.

"…Because of you."

A pause.

"Yes."

Silence.

No denial.

No excuse.

Just truth.

Elena looked away first this time.

Processing.

Thinking.

Calculating.

Then—

"Then fix it."

Adrian watched her.

Carefully.

"That's what I'm doing."

"By locking me in here?" she snapped.

"By keeping you alive."

Frustration built.

Fast.

Sharp.

"I had a life before this."

"And now you don't."

The words landed like a wall.

Elena clenched her jaw.

"You don't get to decide that."

"I already did."

Silence.

Tension.

Too much.

Then—

Unexpectedly—

Adrian stepped back.

Just a little.

"Get ready," he said.

Elena frowned.

"For what?"

A beat.

Then—

"We're not staying here today."

Her eyes narrowed.

"…Where are we going?"

Adrian turned slightly.

Already moving.

"To show you exactly what you're up against."

Elena stood there for a second.

Heart beating faster now.

Not fear.

Anticipation.

Then she followed.

Because whether she liked it or not—

She needed to see it.
