Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 — Controlled Chaos

The silence after the screen went dark felt… wrong.

Too quiet.

Like the storm hadn't passed.

Just—

Paused.

"Systems offline," Leon said.

"Internal network isolated."

Adrian didn't respond.

His eyes were still on the blank screen.

Thinking.

Planning.

Always three steps ahead.

"Turn it back on."

Leon frowned slightly.

"That's a risk."

Adrian didn't look at him.

"Everything is a risk."

A beat.

"Do it."

Leon exhaled through his nose.

Then moved.

Power cycling.

Manual override.

The system flickered back to life.

Slow.

Careful.

No message.

No breach.

Nothing.

"…They're gone," Leon muttered.

Elena shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"They're not gone."

Her eyes stayed on the screen.

"They're watching how we react."

Adrian finally looked at her.

"Then give them something to watch."

Elena frowned.

"I don't think you understand—"

"I understand perfectly."

A step closer.

Now his voice was lower.

Sharper.

"If they want a game," Adrian said, "we set the rules."

Leon smirked slightly.

"There it is."

Elena looked between them.

"…You're serious."

"Always," Adrian replied.

Silence.

She let out a breath.

"Fine."

A beat.

"But we don't play fair."

Adrian's gaze didn't shift.

"I never do."

That was enough.

Elena stepped forward.

"Turn everything back on," she said.

Leon raised a brow.

"All of it?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"And remove half your firewalls."

"…That's stupid."

"It's bait."

Silence.

Leon looked at Adrian.

Waiting.

A second passed.

Then—

"Do it."

Leon huffed a quiet laugh.

"Hope you know what you're doing."

"I do," Elena replied.

Though—

A small part of her wasn't sure.

Systems came back online.

Fully.

Open.

Vulnerable.

"Now what?" Leon asked.

Elena's fingers hovered over the keyboard.

Waiting.

Listening.

"They'll come back," she said quietly.

A beat.

"They won't resist."

Seconds passed.

Then—

A flicker.

There.

A signal.

Small.

Careful.

Testing.

Elena's eyes sharpened.

"Got you."

Her fingers moved instantly.

Tracking.

Locking.

Tracing.

The signal shifted.

Fast.

Smarter than before.

"They're adapting," Leon said.

"So am I."

The system strained.

Lines of code colliding.

Elena leaned in.

Closer.

Focused.

"Almost…"

Then—

Everything froze.

Again.

"…No," Elena whispered.

The screen flickered.

And a new message appeared.

YOU LEARN FAST.

Elena's jaw tightened.

"Shut up."

The message changed.

BUT NOT FAST ENOUGH.

Leon slammed a key.

"Cut it—"

Too late.

Another line appeared.

CHECK YOUR LEFT.

Silence.

All three of them froze.

Slowly—

Leon turned his head.

Toward the glass wall.

Nothing.

Just their reflection.

"…Cute trick," he muttered.

But Elena didn't relax.

Because something felt—

Wrong.

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Leon."

A beat.

"…Yeah."

They both saw it.

At the same time.

A faint red dot.

On the glass.

Moving.

Tracking.

Elena's breath caught.

"…That's not digital."

No.

It wasn't.

Leon's voice dropped instantly.

"Sniper."

Everything shifted.

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"Down."

The glass shattered.

Gunshot.

Too fast.

Too close.

Elena hit the floor hard.

Heart racing.

Leon was already moving.

Gun out.

Scanning.

"Location?" he snapped.

Elena crawled toward the console.

Hands shaking—

Just slightly.

"Triangulating—"

Another shot.

Closer.

"They're not just watching," she said.

Her voice barely steady.

"They're here."

Adrian stood.

Calm.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"Good," he said.

Leon glanced at him.

"…You're insane."

Adrian's eyes locked on the shattered glass.

"No."

A beat.

"Now we know where to look."

Outside—

Somewhere in the distance—

The enemy had just crossed a line.

And there was no going back.

To be continued...
