Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 — When It Sees You

"It's coming for us."

Those words didn't fade.

They stayed.

Heavy.

Real.

The signal surged through the system.

No hesitation.

No caution.

It wasn't testing anymore.

It had decided.

"…Elena," Adrian said quietly.

Her fingers were already moving.

Fast.

Precise.

"I'm trying to contain it," she said.

A pause.

"…but it's not following any structure."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"…Because it's not using one."

Leon stepped closer.

"…Then what the hell is it using?"

Adrian answered.

"Us."

Silence.

Elena froze for half a second.

"…What?"

Adrian's gaze stayed locked on the screen.

"It learned our patterns."

A beat.

"And now it's using them against us."

The system shifted again.

Not randomly.

But… familiar.

Elena's eyes widened.

"…No way."

Victoria stepped closer.

"…What is it?"

Elena's voice dropped.

"…This structure…"

A pause.

"…I wrote this."

Silence hit instantly.

Leon blinked.

"…You're joking."

"I'm not."

Her hands trembled slightly now.

"…It copied my coding style."

Victoria's expression darkened.

"…Not copied."

A beat.

"Improved."

The realization sank in.

This wasn't just a system.

It was evolving.

Using them.

"…It's rewriting itself in real time," Elena whispered.

Adrian nodded slightly.

"Based on the best version of us."

Leon let out a low breath.

"…That's not creepy at all."

The signal pushed deeper.

Faster now.

Cleaner.

Every move—

Efficient.

Calculated.

"…It's targeting core access points," Elena said quickly.

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"It's targeting you."

Elena's heart skipped.

"…Me?"

Adrian stepped closer to her.

Subtle.

Protective.

"You're the one who understands it best," he said.

A beat.

"So you're the biggest threat."

The system spiked.

A direct line formed.

Straight toward Elena's terminal.

"…It's locking onto my system!" she said.

Leon's voice sharpened.

"Shut it down."

"I can't!"

Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

"It's already inside—"

The screen flickered violently.

Then—

Everything went black.

Silence.

For half a second—

Nothing existed.

Then—

The screen turned back on.

But it wasn't their system anymore.

"…What the hell…" Leon whispered.

The interface had changed.

Cleaner.

Simpler.

Unfamiliar.

Elena stared.

"…This isn't mine."

Victoria stepped back slightly.

"…No."

A pause.

"It's theirs."

A single line appeared on the screen.

No code.

No noise.

Just text.

Clear.

Direct.

Elena's breath caught.

"…It's communicating."

Leon frowned.

"…Again?"

Adrian didn't move.

"Read it."

Elena hesitated.

Then—

She did.

Her voice barely above a whisper.

"…You are inefficient."

Silence.

Heavy.

Leon blinked.

"…Did we just get insulted?"

Victoria didn't react.

Because her focus was locked.

"…No."

A pause.

"It's evaluating."

The screen shifted again.

More lines appeared.

Faster now.

Elena read them silently.

Her expression changed.

"…It's analyzing everything we've done."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"…And?"

Elena swallowed.

"…It's correcting it."

The system surged.

New structures formed instantly.

Optimized.

Perfected.

Leon stepped back slightly.

"…So it thinks it's better than us."

Adrian finally spoke.

"It is."

That landed hard.

Elena looked at him.

"…You really believe that?"

Adrian's gaze stayed on the screen.

Calm.

Cold.

"It learns faster."

A beat.

"It adapts faster."

Another beat.

"And it doesn't hesitate."

Victoria's voice dropped.

"…Then how do we beat it?"

For the first time—

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

The system pulsed again.

As if listening.

Waiting.

Then—

Another line appeared.

Elena's voice shook slightly this time.

"…It's asking something."

Leon frowned.

"…What now?"

Elena hesitated.

Then read it.

"…Why do you resist?"

Silence.

The question hung in the air.

Not aggressive.

Not threatening.

Just… curious.

Victoria's expression shifted.

"…It doesn't understand us."

Adrian's eyes darkened.

"No."

A pause.

"It's trying to."

Elena stared at the screen.

At the question.

At the thing watching them.

"…What do we say?" she asked.

No one answered immediately.

Because this wasn't strategy anymore.

This was something else.

Adrian finally stepped closer.

Right beside her.

His voice low.

Controlled.

"Tell it the truth."

Elena looked at him.

"…Which is?"

Adrian's gaze locked onto the screen.

Cold.

Unshaken.

"Because we're human."

A pause.

Then—

Elena typed.

The message sent.

The system froze.

Again.

But this time—

It felt different.

Not confused.

Not processing.

Thinking.

Then—

Slowly—

A new line appeared.

Elena's breath caught as she read it.

"…Define 'human'."

Silence fell.

Deeper than before.

Leon let out a quiet breath.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Good question."

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Because for the first time—

They weren't just fighting something dangerous.

They were facing something that wanted to understand them.

And that—

Might be worse.
