Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: What Lies Below

Night settled slowly over the city, pressing shadows into the spaces between buildings until even the familiar streets felt altered.

Mateo stood across from the church.

Not moving.

The doors were closed again.

Different from before.

"…We said one more time," Lila said.

Her voice was steady.

But tighter now.

Mateo nodded.

"…Yeah."

He didn't step forward.

Not yet.

Because this time—

he wasn't looking at the entrance.

He was watching the structure.

The angles.

The way the light fell across it.

"…You're not going through the front," Lila said.

Mateo shook his head slightly.

"…It's not about the door."

A pause.

"…It never was."

Lila exhaled slowly.

"…Then what is it?"

Mateo didn't answer immediately.

Because now—

he wasn't guessing.

He stepped to the side.

Then stopped.

Adjusted his position.

Not by distance—

But by direction.

The Sunstone warmed.

Faint.

Then steadier.

Lila straightened.

"…You feel that?"

Mateo nodded.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…It's not the place."

He looked at the wall.

Then slightly away from it.

"…It's where we stand."

Entry

They moved along the outer wall.

Not searching—

Aligning.

Step by step.

The warmth increased.

Then—

stopped.

Mateo frowned.

Adjusted again.

A fraction to the left.

Then forward.

The stone shifted.

Not visibly.

But enough.

"…Here," he said.

Lila looked at the wall.

"…There's nothing there."

Mateo placed his hand against it.

Waited.

Nothing.

He adjusted.

Again.

Still nothing.

The warmth flickered—

almost gone—

then returned.

Stronger.

The stone beneath his hand sank—

just slightly.

A seam appeared.

Thin.

Almost invisible.

"…It's not opening," Lila said.

Mateo didn't move.

"…It doesn't open all at once."

The seam widened—

slowly.

Reluctantly.

Just enough.

A narrow space.

Dark.

Cold air slipped through.

Lila hesitated.

"…This is worse than last time."

Mateo nodded.

"…Yeah."

Then stepped in.

She followed.

Below

The passage was narrow.

Barely enough space to move through.

Stone walls.

Uneven.

Unfinished.

The air felt different.

Heavier.

Still.

Their footsteps echoed—

soft.

But too loud.

"…This wasn't meant to be found easily," Lila said.

Mateo didn't respond.

Because the Sunstone was reacting again.

Not warm—

steady.

Guiding.

He slowed.

Adjusted.

The passage shifted slightly.

Not physically—

But in direction.

"…It's changing," Lila whispered.

Mateo shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…We are."

They moved deeper.

Step.

Pause.

Step.

The darkness thickened.

Then—

the space opened.

The Chamber

Not large.

But wider than the passage.

The ceiling lower.

The air colder.

The walls—

marked.

Lines carved into stone.

Patterns.

Not random.

Structured.

Lila stepped forward slowly.

"…This is different."

Mateo nodded.

"…This is earlier."

A pause.

"…Or deeper."

The Sunstone dimmed slightly.

Not inactive—

but quieter.

As if—

waiting.

Lila traced one of the markings with her eyes.

"…These aren't the same as before."

Mateo crouched.

Studied the lines.

"…No."

A pause.

"…These aren't directions."

Silence.

"…Then what are they?" Lila asked.

Mateo didn't answer immediately.

Because something didn't fit.

The pattern—

Incomplete.

"…It's missing something," he said.

Lila frowned.

"…Like before?"

Mateo shook his head slightly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…Like it's waiting."

The air shifted.

Subtle.

But enough.

The Sunstone flickered.

Then—

stopped.

Cold.

The markings on the wall—

seemed to shift.

Not physically.

But in perception.

Lila stepped back slightly.

"…That's not normal."

Mateo didn't move.

Because now—

he understood something.

Not fully.

But enough.

"…It's not incomplete," he said.

A pause.

"…We are."

Silence.

The words settled heavier than the space itself.

Interference

A sound echoed from the passage behind them.

Footsteps.

Not theirs.

Lila turned sharply.

"…We're not alone."

Mateo stood.

The chamber felt smaller now.

Contained.

The footsteps stopped—

just outside the opening.

A shadow stretched across the floor.

Still.

Waiting.

"…You weren't supposed to get this far."

The voice was calm.

Controlled.

Not Delgado.

Lila's breath caught.

Mateo didn't respond.

Because this—

was different.

The shadow shifted.

Not entering.

But not leaving.

"…You're ahead of where you should be," the voice continued.

A pause.

"…That creates problems."

Silence tightened.

Mateo's grip tightened around the Sunstone.

"…For who?" he asked.

A brief pause.

"…For you."

The air grew colder.

The markings on the wall flickered—

then steadied.

"…We're not forcing it," Mateo said.

"…No," the voice replied.

A pause.

"…You're following it."

Silence.

"…That's worse."

Shift

The chamber responded.

Not opening.

Not moving.

But tightening.

The space felt smaller.

Pressure building—

without movement.

Lila stepped closer to Mateo.

"…We need to go."

Mateo didn't argue.

Because now—

this wasn't discovery.

This was exposure.

They moved back toward the passage.

The shadow didn't stop them.

Didn't follow.

Just watched.

Return

They stepped out into the night.

The air felt lighter.

Normal again.

Too normal.

Mateo turned back.

The entrance—

gone.

Sealed.

As if it had never opened.

Lila exhaled slowly.

"…That wasn't just the system."

Mateo shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…That was someone else."

Silence stretched.

The city moved around them.

Unaware.

Unchanged.

But something had shifted again.

Because now—

they weren't just inside it.

They were ahead of it.

And for the first time—

that felt like a mistake.
