Chapter 22 - The Crimson Offer

The Crimson Guild approached them after the Shattered Fortress.

Tomas, the merchant envoy, arrived with a different demeanor than before. Less casual confidence, more genuine respect.

"You've cleared three high-level dungeons in two weeks," he said. "The Iron Legion's truce. The Order's retreat. Your settlement has become... significant."

"We're focused on survival," Derek replied. "Not significance."

"Survival requires significance in this world. You've attracted attention—not just from factions, but from individuals. High-level players. Dungeon specialists. People who want to work with the team that cleared the Shattered Fortress."

"What are you offering?"

"Connections. Resources. Information about dungeons that haven't been mapped yet." Tomas produced a scroll. "Including one that appeared recently. A Level 35 dungeon called the Void Gate. The Guild believes it contains something... special."

Alex studied the scroll. The Void Gate was located in the city's industrial district, a tear in reality that led somewhere outside normal space.

[INTELLIGENCE: THE VOID GATE IS CONNECTED TO ORIGINAL SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE]

[THE WATCHER HAS MARKED THIS LOCATION AS A FRAGMENT SOURCE]

"Special how?" Alex asked.

"The Guild doesn't know for certain. But our sources indicate it's connected to the System's origins. Pre-Awakening code. The kind of thing that can change... everything."

This was it. The final fragments. The path to evolution.

"What's the price?"

"Exclusive trading rights with Sanctuary for one year. And a small favor, to be determined later."

Derek and Alex exchanged glances. The price was reasonable—potentially too reasonable. The Guild was known for extracting maximum value from every deal.

"Why offer this to us?"

Tomas smiled. "Because you're the only ones who can clear it. The Guild has sent three parties. None returned. You have something they didn't—something that lets you defeat the undefeatable."

He didn't specify what that something was, but his eyes flickered toward Alex.

"Think about it," Tomas said. "But not too long. Others are interested in the Void Gate. And not all of them are... reasonable."

He departed, leaving the scroll behind.

---

The Void Gate was different from other dungeons.

It didn't just exist in space—it existed between spaces. A doorway to somewhere outside normal reality. The kind of place where the System's rules didn't fully apply.

"We don't know what's inside," Maya said. "The Guild lost three parties. That suggests extreme danger."

"Or extreme reward." Alex studied the entrance—a swirling vortex of darkness that seemed to drink the light around it. "The fragments are here. I can feel them."

[SYSTEM INTEGRITY: 79%]

His corruption was worsening. Time was running out.

"We go tonight," Alex decided. "Full team. Maximum preparation."

Derek nodded. "I'll coordinate the assault."

---

At midnight, they entered.

[MIDNIGHT PROTOCOL ACTIVE]

[TIME REMAINING: 75:00]

The Void Gate swallowed them.

Inside, reality was... negotiable. The dungeon shifted constantly, walls becoming floors becoming ceilings. Gravity was a suggestion. Time moved strangely, seconds stretching into eternities.

And the enemies...

They were fragments. Literally. Pieces of deleted users, erased from existence but not entirely gone. Ghosts of the System's purges, haunting the space between realities.

[GHOST ENTITY DEFEATED]

[+500 XP]

[+100 XP BONUS: YOUR EVOLUTION PROGRESS ALLOWS YOU TO INTERACT WITH GHOST ENTITIES]

Alex's glitched status wasn't just surviving in this place—it was thriving. The very corruption that was degrading his existence gave him power in the realm of deleted things.

[EVOLUTION PROGRESS: 34% → 38%]

He was absorbing the fragments simply by defeating them.

"Alex, look at this," Maya called.

She'd found something—a terminal, like the one where he'd first learned about his condition. But this one was different. Older. Covered in symbols that predated the System.

Alex approached it.

[SYSTEM TERMINAL: ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURE DETECTED]

[ACCESSING...]

[FILE: THE MIDNIGHT MONARCH PROTOCOL]

[ORIGIN: PRE-AWAKENING]

[PURPOSE: EMERGENCY ADMINISTRATOR ACCESS]

[STATUS: CORRUPTED BUT FUNCTIONAL]

The information flooded his mind. The Midnight Monarch wasn't just a class—it was a key. A fragment of the original System, designed to give someone administrative privileges during crisis events. The Awakening had been such a crisis, but the key had been scattered, corrupted, and eventually attached to a dying nobody named Alex Chen.

He wasn't a glitch. He was a failsafe.

[TIME REMAINING: 45:00]

"Keep moving," Alex said, his voice strange. "We need to reach the core."

The deeper they went, the more the dungeon's nature became clear. This wasn't just a dungeon—it was a memory. A record of every user the System had deleted, preserved in the space between realities.

And at the center, waiting for them, was something that shouldn't exist.

[BOSS DETECTED: THE DELETED ONE]

[LEVEL: ???]

[ORIGIN: FIRST USER DELETED BY THE SYSTEM]

The entity that emerged was human in shape only. It was made of pure information, a ghost of data given form. And its eyes, when they fixed on Alex, held recognition.

"Another anomaly," it said, its voice echoing from nowhere. "Come to join me in deletion?"

"I'm not here to be deleted," Alex replied. "I'm here to evolve."

"Evolution is a lie the System tells. There is only deletion or submission."

[TIME REMAINING: 35:00]

"Then I'll choose a third option."

The battle began.

The Deleted One was unlike any enemy Alex had faced. It didn't fight with weapons or magic—it fought with memory. Every strike erased something from existence. Every defense rewrote reality to bypass attacks.

Alex's team was useless here. Their attacks passed through the entity like smoke. Only Alex, with his corrupted, glitched existence, could interact with it.

He fought alone.

[VOID STRIKE]

The attack connected, but instead of deleting the entity, it was absorbed.

"Your power is stolen from the original architecture," the Deleted One said. "It recognizes me. It won't delete me."

[TIME REMAINING: 22:00]

Alex needed a different approach.

He reached into his own corruption—into the very degradation that was killing him—and found something unexpected. A connection. The original code that had merged with him recognized the Deleted One. They were from the same source.

And that code wanted to reunite.

Alex stopped attacking and reached out instead.

"I'm not here to delete you," he said. "I'm here to remember you."

The Deleted One froze.

"What?"

"The System deletes. But I carry a piece of the original architecture. The code that predates deletion." Alex's hand touched the entity's form. "I can remember you. Carry you. Give you existence through me."

"That's... impossible."

"I'm a glitch. I don't follow possible."

[TIME REMAINING: 15:00]

The Deleted One hesitated. Then, slowly, it dissolved into light, flowing into Alex's outstretched hand.

[ENTITY ABSORBED: THE DELETED ONE]

[EVOLUTION PROGRESS: 34% → 67%]

[SYSTEM INTEGRITY: 79% → 75%]

[NEW ABILITY UNLOCKED: MEMORY OF THE DELETED - YOU CAN SUMMON ASPECTS OF ABSORBED ENTITIES]

The dungeon collapsed around them.

Alex grabbed his team and Shadow Stepped them to safety, emerging from the Void Gate just as his midnight power faded.
