Chapter 82 - Cracks in the Glass

The Monday morning air in the apartment was thick with the scent of freshly brewed espresso and the faint, sweet smell of the maple syrup Hajun liked on his waffles.

For Jin-woo, the transition from the golden haze of Sunday's picnic to the sharp reality of a work week usually felt like a cold plunge.

Today, however, the warmth of Eun-soo's "Sleep well, Oppa" still lingered—a protective barrier against the stress of the corporate world.

"Uncle," Hajun said, his voice small as he pushed a piece of waffle around his plate with mathematical precision. "Will Teacher Eun-soo be at school, or will she go with us today?"

Jin-woo looked up from his tablet, softening his expression. "She will be at school, Hajun. And I'll be the one picking you up this evening."

"Remember our deal? If you finish your logic puzzles, we might stop for ice cream."

Hajun's eyes brightened, the small disappointment that shadowed his gaze receding for a moment. "The one with the honeycomb bits?"

"Only the best for a math prodigy," Jin-woo replied, ruffling the boy's hair.

As he ushered Hajun toward the door where the car was parked, Jin-woo felt a sense of stability he hadn't known in years. But that stability was about to be tested.

Jin-woo had barely stepped into his office at Answer AI when Secretary Han Ji-won met him with a look that was uncharacteristically flustered. She was holding a sleek, silver-embossed folder.

"CEO, we have a... persistent situation," she said, falling into step with him.

"If it's the server migration, tell them Friday," Jin-woo said, his mind already elsewhere.

"It's not the servers. It's Lee Eun-joo."

Jin-woo paused, his hand on the handle of his office door. The name was familiar. Lee Eun-joo was a legend in the world of high-end concierge services—a woman who moved between the shadows of the ultra-wealthy, brokering deals that money couldn't usually buy.

"The private banker? Why is she calling us?"

"She's representing a new production," Ji-won explained, opening the folder as they entered the office. "A show called Celebrity at Your Service. The premise is high-concept: A-list actors work as executive secretaries for top-tier CEOs to 'humanize' the corporate brand."

"They want you, Jin-woo. They say the 'Young, Stoic Tech Genius' trope is exactly what the viewers are craving."

Jin-woo sat behind his desk, his face returning to its habitual mask of logic. "Tell them no. My brand is built on data and privacy, not variety show antics."

"I did," Ji-won sighed. "But Lee Eun-joo doesn't take 'no' from assistants. She's on Line 1 right now. She says it's about 'long-term strategic positioning.'"

Jin-woo sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. He picked up the phone. "Lee Eun-joo-ssi. I hope this is brief."

"CEO Seo," a voice like chilled silk came through the line. "I'll skip the pleasantries. You're a self-made man in a field people find intimidating. AI is cold, Jin-woo. This show would give you a face. It would give Answer AI a heart."

"Imagine the IPO projections if the public falls in love with the man behind the algorithm."

"I don't need a heart for my IPO, I need accuracy," Jin-woo countered. "And I have a five-year-old nephew to consider. I won't have cameras invading his space."

"We can work around the child," Eun-joo pushed. "Think of the networking. We've already signed Cha Tae-jun of the Cha Group. He'll be paired with Kang Ara."

Jin-woo froze. The name Cha always sent a ripple of tension through him now, and Kang Ara was the sister of Kang Min-ho—the man intended for Eun-soo. The web of the elite was really closely knitted.

"My answer is no," Jin-woo said, his voice dropping an octave. "I have personal reasons for keeping my private life... private. I am seeing someone, and she is not part of this world. I won't expose her to the scrutiny of a reality show."

"A secret girlfriend?" Eun-joo's tone turned curious. "That's even better for ratings, Jin-woo. The 'Hidden Muse' of the AI King."

"It's not a plot point, Eun-joo-ssi. It's my life. Don't call again."

He hung up, the silence of the office suddenly feeling heavy. He knew the world Eun-soo was hiding from. If he stepped into that spotlight, the cameras would eventually find her. They would find the "simple" teacher and tear her secret identity apart.

While Jin-woo was closing doors, Cha Tae-jun was opening them with a flourish. In the mahogany-clad executive suite of the Cha Group's hospitality wing, Tae-jun stood by the window, looking out over Seoul like a king surveying a restless province.

"So," Tae-jun said, turning to face Lee Eun-joo, who sat gracefully on his leather sofa. "You're saying Kang Ara is already committed?"

"She is," Eun-joo replied. "She sees it as a way to promote her new role. Working for you, Tae-jun, gives her the 'Elite Working Woman' aesthetic she needs."

Tae-jun began thinking. He knew Kang Ara. He had met her in Jeju and had also helped her in the hospital. She was also Min-ho's sister, whom his father liked for Eun-soo. He hesitated, but thinking that it would help Kang Min-ho, he made up his mind.

"I'll do it," Tae-jun said, his voice commanding.

"Wonderful," Eun-joo smiled. "I'll have the contracts sent over."

"But," Tae-jun interrupted, his eyes narrowing. "I want a say in the filming locations. I want us to frequent the areas where 'ordinary' people go. I want to show that the Cha Group is in touch with the pulse of the streets."

He was interested in the streets. He wanted to see what was new in the market and what people liked to improve his hotel business.

If he was filming a high-profile show with Kang Ara in the very neighborhoods Eun-soo frequented, he would also be able to meet his sister sometimes and visit her place.

He loved his sister, but to him, her "simple life" was a deluded fantasy that was not sustainable—though if his sister liked it, he could do nothing. It was possible it was time to bring her back home; also, they needed to introduce Jin-woo to their parents eventually.

Later that evening, Jin-woo arrived at the kindergarten. He saw Eun-soo standing by the gate, her hair tucked behind her ears, laughing as a student handed her a wilted dandelion. The sight of her made the tension of the morning evaporate.

"Rough day?" she asked as he approached, her intuition as sharp as ever.

"Just corporate noise," he said, taking Hajun's bag. "How was the day today?"

"Lively," she smiled. "We talked about the butterflies from yesterday. Hajun told everyone they were 'rose-gold' like the willows."

They walked toward the car—a picture of domestic bliss that felt fragile to Jin-woo now. He didn't tell her about the show. He didn't want to worry her with the fact that her brother was about to become the face of a national variety program. She would likely hear it herself from her brother soon enough.

However, as they reached the SUV, a sleek black sedan pulled up across the street. A woman stepped out—Lee Eun-joo. She didn't approach; she simply stood there, wearing oversized sunglasses, watching them.

She saw Jin-woo, the stoic CEO, leaning in to whisper something to the teacher. She saw the way Eun-soo looked at him—with a gaze that didn't care about his net worth.

Jin-woo's jaw tightened. He placed a protective hand on Eun-soo's lower back, guiding her into the car.

"Who is that?" Eun-soo asked, glancing at the woman in the rearview mirror as they pulled away.

"No one important," Jin-woo said, his voice a bit too clipped.

"Jin-woo-ssi?" Eun-soo turned in her seat, sensing the shift in his energy. "You're doing that thing again. The 'CEO face.'"

He softened, reaching over to take her hand. "I'm just tired, Eun-soo. Let's just go home. I'll make dinner. Or rather, I'll order something that is good."

Eun-soo laughed, but her eyes remained pensive. She knew that look. It was the look of a man preparing to hide something.

That night, after Hajun was asleep, Jin-woo sat in his study, the blue light of his monitors reflecting in his glasses. He was looking at a press release draft that Ji-won had sent.

"CHA TAE-JUN AND KANG ARA TO STAR IN 'CELEBRITY AT YOUR SERVICE'—A LOOK INTO THE LIVES OF SEOUL'S ROYALTY."

The storm was coming. Kang Min-ho's sister and Eun-soo's brother were teaming up for a public spectacle. It was a calculated move by the Cha family to solidify the merger with Mirai Corporation through public sentiment.

His phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number:

A CEO's greatest asset is his foresight, Jin-woo. If you don't join the narrative, the narrative will join you. See you on set, one way or another. — LEJ.

Jin-woo deleted the text. He looked at a photo on his desk—the one he had taken yesterday at the Butterfly Garden. Eun-soo, radiant and free, with a Monarch on her shoulder.

"I won't let them turn you into a trophy, Eun-soo," he whispered to the empty room.

But as the gears of the Chaebol machine began to grind, and as Lee Eun-joo began plotting her next move, Jin-woo realized that "peace" wasn't just a person. Peace was a battlefield, and he was going to have to fight to keep hers.

The next morning, the headlines broke. The show was official. And in the teacher's lounge of a small, quiet kindergarten, Kim Da-som came running in, holding her phone out to Eun-soo.

"Eun-soo! Look! Your brother... and Kang Ara? They're doing a show together! They're calling them the 'Golden Couple of Seoul!'"

Eun-soo's heart dropped. The wall she had built between her two worlds hadn't just cracked; it was starting to crumble.

She knew, with a sinking certainty, that her quiet Sundays with Jin-woo were about to become very, very loud. Since her brother was now out in public, she would not be able to hide for much longer.
