Chapter 85 - Confrontation

The drive to the Cha family estate in Pyeongchang-dong felt like a slow ascent into a granite fortress.

Winding roads, flanked by towering stone walls and ancient, manicured pines, stood in stark contrast to the chaotic, vibrant streets of Seoul they had left behind.

In the passenger seat of Jin-woo's SUV, Eun-soo sat rigidly, her hands tightly interlaced in her lap until her knuckles turned white.

This was the first time she had ever brought a man home—the first time she was identifying someone as hers to the formidable Cha Do-yoon—and the nerves were threatening to overwhelm her.

Before making the journey, they had safely dropped Ha-jun off at the home of Jin-woo's parents.

Jin-ho and Young-sook, ever the calm and observant educators, had taken one look at their son's resolute expression and understood the weight of the day.

When Jin-woo explained that he was going to the Cha estate to formally ask for Eun-soo's hand, his parents had initially offered to go with him, wanting to provide the traditional family support.

However, Jin-woo had insisted on going alone; he wanted to face the storm himself, shielding his parents from any potential discomfort if the high-society meeting turned sour.

Knowing their son's iron will—that once he decided on a path, no force on earth could move him—they simply nodded and ushered a sleepy Ha-jun inside.

Their quiet, unwavering support had bolstered Eun-soo's courage for a time, but as the massive, wrought-iron gates of her family's estate loomed into view, that courage began to fracture.

Jin-woo reached across the center console, his large, warm hand covering hers and pressing her fingers flat against her lap.

The physical contact was an anchor, a steady reminder of the promise he had made just hours ago.

"Breathe," Jin-woo said softly, his voice an unwavering, grounding baritone.

"We are simply meeting your parents. You do not have to say anything; I will take care of it all."

Eun-soo nodded, offering a fragile, watery smile. "I know. It's just... it's my first time introducing a man to them. I'm terrified."

The heavy mahogany doors of the estate were opened by silent staff, revealing a sweeping foyer of imported marble and cold, architectural perfection.

Eun-soo led Jin-woo through the grand hall and into the primary drawing room, where the atmosphere was so thick with unspoken authority it felt physically heavy.

Seated at the center of the room was Cha Do-yoon, Eun-soo's father.

He did not rise when they entered. His posture was rigid, his eyes dark and fixed directly on Jin-woo with the piercing intensity of a predator assessing a new arrival.

Beside him sat Shin-hye, Eun-soo's mother, radiating effortless elegance in a silk blouse.

She sipped from a porcelain teacup, her gaze flicking over Jin-woo with a quiet curiosity; she had suspected this day would come since she first saw them together, and in her heart, she only wanted her daughter's happiness.

Standing by the grand fireplace was Cha Tae-jun, Eun-soo's older brother.

His broad shoulders and sharp jawline mirrored their father's, but his eyes softened almost imperceptibly when they landed on his sister.

He offered a slight, knowing nod toward Jin-woo. Having met the CEO before, Tae-jun had already formed his own silent approval; he saw Jin-woo and Kang Min-ho as two different kinds of "good men," but he knew which one his sister truly loved.

"I expected you to return with the security I dispatched," Do-yoon said, his voice echoing in the cavernous room like a gavel.

"Instead, you arrive an hour late, accompanied by a stranger."

"He isn't a stranger, Father," Eun-soo said, her voice shaking but her chin held high. "This is Seo Jin-woo."

Tae-jun pushed off the marble mantle, taking a slow, measured step forward to bridge the tension.

"Dad, this is Seo Jin-woo, the CEO of Answer AI," Tae-jun informed his father, his tone conversational.

"I've read the industry reports; he's a self-made tech prodigy. Very impressive in a boardroom. I mentioned our previous meeting at my place, remember?"

"I am here because it is my responsibility to ensure her safety," Jin-woo added.

His tone was entirely devoid of intimidation. He did not shrink under Do-yoon's suffocating gaze, nor was he over-aggressive. He simply stood his ground, a man who knew his own worth.

Shin-hye set her teacup down with a soft clink. "Jin-woo, we are meeting again. I hope you are well."

Jin-woo stepped forward and bowed respectfully to Do-yoon and Shin-hye.

The angle was precise, faultless, and deeply traditional, showing his upbringing before he straightened to his full height.

"Chairman Cha, Madam Shin," Jin-woo began, his voice clear and resonant.

"I am here to formally introduce myself, not just as the founder of Answer AI, but as the man who loves your daughter. I am here to ask for your blessing, and to inform you of my intention to marry Eun-soo."

A silence descended upon the drawing room, heavy and absolute.

Tae-jun crossed his arms, an amused smirk playing on his lips; he wasn't surprised by the boldness, only impressed.

Shin-hye, however, looked as though she had been struck by a sudden gust of wind—she knew they were close, but the word "marriage" felt so sudden, so permanent.

Do-yoon leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. He studied Jin-woo with the ruthless scrutiny of a businessman who had never lost a deal in thirty years.

"Love," Do-yoon repeated, testing the word as if it were a foreign currency with a terrible exchange rate.

"You speak of love and marriage, Mr. Seo. But you fail to understand the reality of our world. A marriage in this family is not a romance; it is a merger. It is a deal we make to protect our legacy."

Do-yoon stood up, slowly closing the distance between them until he was inches from Jin-woo.

"I already have a path laid out for Eun-soo. Kang Min-ho, the heir to Mirai Corporation. He is perfectly polished, from an impeccable family, and most importantly, he already harbors a genuine fondness for Eun-soo. A union with Mirai secures our infrastructure expansion. Min-ho was born into this weight; he knows how to carry it."

"Father, my sister sees Kang Min-ho as just another acquisition," Tae-jun interjected softly, though he didn't look away from the pair.

"But our father is right, Jin-woo. Min-ho has everything to keep her safe, and the merger is good for the family."

"With all due respect, Chairman," Jin-woo countered, his voice remaining a picture of logical composure.

"I may not be from a well-known family, but I have the confidence to provide whatever your daughter needs. I can give her the life she truly wants."

Jin-woo reached into the inner pocket of his coat and retrieved the thick, embossed envelope. He placed it on the low glass table between them.

"This is an acceptance letter for a Full Doctoral Fellowship in Applied Mathematics at the University of Oxford," Jin-woo explained.

"I depart for London shortly. While I am there, my research will bridge the gap between the present and the future of the AI industry—the precise sectors that will dictate the future of the global technical landscape."

Shin-hye frowned, surprised by this revelation. "Jin-woo, you are leaving for England? And you expect my daughter to wait for you? Is that not... inappropriate?"

"I expect nothing but to prove my worth," Jin-woo said smoothly, his eyes locked onto Do-yoon's.

"I am stepping away from daily operations to complete this research. The world is shifting toward data. Mirai Corporation builds hotels with concrete; I will own the systems that run them. I am going to London to gather the power necessary to ensure I can provide Eun-soo with everything. When I return, having completed my Ph.D., I will marry her."

"Eun-soo," Shin-hye protested gently, turning to her daughter. "Why didn't you tell me sooner that you liked Jin-woo? Do you think your mother wouldn't support you if the man you chose was good?"

"Sorry, Mom," Eun-soo said, her head lowering shyly.

Do-yoon stared at the envelope on the table, then looked back up at Jin-woo.

The patriarch's face was an unreadable mask. For a long, agonizing moment, the only sound was the crackle of the fireplace.

"You are arrogant, Mr. Seo," Do-yoon finally said, his voice dropping an octave.

"I am not, sir," Jin-woo corrected quietly. "I simply have confidence in myself."

To the shock of the women, a low, rumbling chuckle escaped Do-yoon's chest.

The tension in the room instantly fractured. Tae-jun's posture relaxed, a smile of genuine approval touching his eyes.

"I have spent my life surrounded by men who say they can do this or that, but never have the confidence to back it up," Do-yoon said, walking back to his chair.

He looked at Jin-woo with a newly minted, begrudging respect.

"Kang Min-ho is a safe choice. A comfortable choice. I still think he is excellent for my daughter—he is rare, intelligent, and a good man."

Do-yoon looked at his daughter, and for the first time, his eyes held the warmth of a father.

"Eun-soo, do you really think I would go against your wishes? Have I ever truly stopped you from doing anything? Why are you always afraid of me just because I care? You will only understand why I am the way I am when you become a parent."

Eun-soo lowered her head further, a flush of shame on her cheeks. She realized he was right; he was strict and imposing, but he had never truly denied her heart's desire.

Do-yoon turned back to Jin-woo. "I like Min-ho. But I see the fire in you, Seo Jin-woo. You make your own decisions. You carry the weight of your own life. I respect a man who carves his own path. So... I accept your request to marry Eun-soo."

Relief washed over Eun-soo so violently she felt her knees tremble.

"However," Do-yoon continued, his tone hardening back into law.

"Words are proposals. Actions are the contract. You will go to England. You will finish your Ph.D. Until then, Eun-soo will remain here with us, safe from the media circus her brother created. And keep this in mind: if what you promised does not happen, I will still marry her to Kang Min-ho."

Tae-jun winced as his father shot him another glare, and he quickly lowered his head.

"I accept those terms," Jin-woo said without a second of hesitation.

"Then when you return," Do-yoon finished, "if you have achieved what you claim, I will personally give my blessing."

"Thank you, Chairman," Jin-woo bowed deeply, his stoic mask returning, though his eyes betrayed a quiet triumph.

"You've got guts, Seo," Tae-jun remarked, walking over to clap a heavy hand on Jin-woo's shoulder.

"Thank you," Jin-woo replied flatly, causing Tae-jun to burst into laughter at the man's continued stiffness.

As the meeting dissolved into a casual setting, everyone sat down.

Eun-soo finally allowed herself to breathe, looking at Jin-woo with a love so profound it hurt.

He was leaving for London, a distance that would test them both. But as Jin-woo caught her eye and offered a microscopic, reassuring nod, she knew the truth.

He wasn't leaving her behind; he was going ahead to build the world they would live in together.

Eun-soo began to talk to her mother, who continued to glance at Jin-woo and laugh occasionally.

The looks made Jin-woo feel uncharacteristically uncomfortable, wondering what secrets Eun-soo had shared about him.

But he couldn't leave yet—Eun-soo's father had insisted they all have dinner together.
