Chapter 22 - Extra Chapter 2 – Ethan: Loyalty Rewarded, A Life Finally His Own

Ethan had been by Lucian's side since he was sixteen years old.

Orphaned, homeless, and his family destroyed by the same dark, powerful forces that would later target Lucian and his father, he had been taken in and given shelter by the head of the Lucian family. When Lucian's father was assassinated and Lucian himself was poisoned, severely injuring his eyes and forcing him into hiding, Ethan swore a lifelong oath. He would stand by Lucian until his last breath. He would be his shadow, his right hand, his most loyal subordinate, and his silent protector. For many, many years, that oath was Ethan's entire life.

He had watched Lucian lock himself inside the cold, quiet mansion, pretending to be blind, while secretly building a business empire that stretched across the globe. He had executed every dangerous order, handled every secret transaction, eliminated every hidden enemy, and cleaned up every mess that threatened to expose Lucian's true identity. He had worked day and night, never resting, never complaining, never asking for anything in return. To the outside world, he was just a quiet, efficient, unremarkable assistant—polite, calm, always one step behind his master, never drawing attention to himself. But inside the walls of the Lucian mansion, he was the only person who knew all of Lucian's deepest, darkest secrets. He had seen the man behind the blindfold long before Ella had ever stepped foot inside the house.

He was there on Ella's wedding day. He saw her walking down the long corridor in her heavy wedding dress, her face pale, her eyes filled with fear and despair. He saw her enter the bedroom, trembling nervously, waiting for a husband she thought would be cruel and bitter. And he saw Lucian speak to her gently, promising her safety and respect, and felt a quiet shock. In all the years he had served Lucian, he had never seen him show even a trace of softness toward anyone.

In the days that followed, Ethan observed Ella quietly, from a distance. He saw her wake up early every morning, trying to do housework out of habit, fearing she would be considered useless. He saw her endure harsh scolding and humiliation from her stepmother without talking back, her eyes filled with sadness but never hatred. He saw her treat Lucian with kindness and gentleness, even when she believed he was helpless and blind. And most importantly, he saw the way Lucian slowly changed. The cold, distant tycoon began to soften. He started to care about someone other than his revenge and his empire. He began to smile, quietly and rarely, but genuinely.

Ethan realized early on that Ella was not just Lucian's wife. She was his salvation.

He was genuinely happy for them. Yet deep inside his heart, a faint, quiet loneliness lingered. He had dedicated his entire youth, his entire life, to serving Lucian. He had no family, no friends outside the mansion, no personal hobbies, no dreams of his own. Love, happiness, a normal life—those felt like concepts meant for other people. For Ethan, there was only duty, loyalty, and service. He did not allow himself to wish for more.

That all changed when he met Clara.

Clara was a young, professional nurse who joined the family's medical team shortly after Ella burned her hand in the kitchen. She was bright, warm, energetic, and unafraid to speak her mind. Unlike most people who worked in the mansion, who treated Ethan as if he were invisible or merely a tool, she treated him like a real person.

Their first interaction was brief. Ethan was rushing to fetch burn ointment and medical supplies for Ella, and Clara looked up from arranging the first-aid kit and smiled at him gently. "You're always rushing around, working so hard," she said softly. "Don't forget to take a break sometimes. Even the busiest people need to rest."

No one had ever said that to him. No one had ever cared whether he rested or not. No one had ever seen how tired he was. In that moment, something inside Ethan's cold, closed heart softened.

Slowly, they began to talk. She asked him about his day. She listened to him speak, even though he could not reveal any company or master secrets. She laughed at his quiet, dry sense of humor, a side of him almost no one ever saw. She saw the loyalty, the kindness, and the loneliness hidden beneath his calm, professional exterior. She saw him—not the assistant, not the shadow, but Ethan.

For the first time in his life, Ethan began to imagine a life beyond his oath. A life where he could return home to someone who waited for him. A life filled with small, ordinary joys—morning coffee, evening walks, quiet conversations, and simple happiness. He began to realize that he did not have to spend his entire existence living for someone else.

Lucian noticed.

One evening, after Ethan had spent hours coordinating security, analyzing threats from Harrison and the mysterious watcher, and organizing evidence against the corrupt family members, Lucian called him into his private study. Ethan tensed up immediately, assuming he had made a mistake or failed to complete a task properly.

But Lucian simply sat behind his desk, his expression calm and sincere, not at all like the ruthless tycoon he was to the world.

"Ethan," he said, his voice steady and gentle. "You have devoted your entire life to me. You have risked your life countless times. You have sacrificed your youth, your freedom, and your chance at a normal life. You have never asked for anything, and you have never failed me. I want you to understand something—your loyalty is not a chain. You are not bound to me forever. You deserve a life of your own. Happiness. Love. All the things you have helped me find."

Ethan stared at him, completely stunned. He had never imagined hearing such words from the man he had served for so long.

"Sir, I—"

Lucian raised a hand, stopping him gently. "Clara is a good woman. She sees you. She cares about you. Don't let your sense of duty make you miss this chance at happiness. You have more than earned it."

In that moment, a heavy weight that Ethan had carried for years lifted from his shoulders. He had spent so long living for Lucian that he had forgotten how to live for himself.

With Lucian's quiet blessing, Ethan allowed himself to grow closer to Clara. They took slow walks in the mansion's beautiful garden during quiet afternoons. They drank tea together in the small sitting room, talking for hours about meaningless, wonderful things. For the first time, Ethan felt light. He felt peaceful. He felt happy.

When Harrison and the mysterious watcher launched their final, desperate attack, Ethan fought with everything he had—not only for Lucian and Ella, but also for the future he now had to protect. He helped gather irrefutable evidence against Harrison. He coordinated the security team to ensure the mansion remained impenetrable. He stood by Lucian's side until the very end, ensuring that every traitor was punished and every threat was eliminated.

Once the danger was completely gone and the Lucian family finally lived in peace, Ethan knew it was time.

He brought Clara to the quiet garden at sunset, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him. She said yes immediately, throwing her arms around him, tears of joy in her eyes.

Lucian personally gave them away at their small, private wedding ceremony, standing beside Ella, both of them smiling warmly. For Ethan, it was the greatest honor he could ever receive.

In the years that followed, Ethan remained Lucian's most trusted assistant. He continued to oversee the most important affairs of the Lucian Group, ensuring the massive empire ran smoothly and steadily. But he also had a life of his own. A warm home. A loving wife. Several years later, two beautiful children who adored their Uncle Lucian and Aunt Ella and loved running around the Lucian mansion.

He had once been a lonely, orphaned boy with nothing but an oath. Now he had a family, a purpose, and a bright, hopeful future.

Loyalty had been his entire life. But love had given him a reason to truly live.
