Chapter 1 - Prologue: The Darkest Day Of My Life

The Legend of the Element Master

Long ago, the world was on the brink of ruin. Beasts of supernatural power descended upon humanity, bringing war and devastation. The strongest warriors took up arms, but against the creatures, none could stand. Hope was lost.

Then, from the shadows of despair, a lone figure emerged. Cloaked in mystery, with white hair and crimson eyes, he wielded an unknown power. With a single strike, he felled the king of monsters, turning the tide of history.

His name, his clan, and his element, all were lost to time. Yet, his legend lived on.

Several years later, the land was at peace.

Rolling fields of green stretched endlessly beneath a golden sky. Trees swayed gently in the breeze, their leaves whispering soft lullabies. Flowers of every color painted the earth, their fragrance drifting through the crisp morning air. And nestled within this tranquil paradise stood an old wooden house, modest, weathered, yet full of warmth. Its slanted roof creaked against the wind, and its walls, though aged, carried the laughter and memories of those who lived within.

This was home.

I was seven years old then. Just a boy without a care in the world, waking up to another beautiful morning.

I remember blinking the sleep from my eyes, stretching as the soft glow of sunlight streamed through my window. The house was quiet except for the faint creaking of footsteps in the hallway. Curious, I turned to see my older brother, Kanji, passing by my door. His jet-black hair was slightly messy, his sharp blue eyes carrying a glint of quiet determination. Even at that age, I admired him and wanted to be like him.

"Kanji!" I called out, rubbing my eyes as I sat up.

He paused, giving me a small, amused smile.

"You're up earlier than I thought."

I frowned, puffing my cheeks in protest.

"You were gonna leave without saying goodbye again, weren't you?"

Kanji scratched the back of his head.

"I figured it'd be easier that way."

I wasn't having it. With a huff, I threw off my blankets and stomped over to him, my tiny fists clenched.

"You promised we'd play today! You promised, Kanji!"

He chuckled, ruffling my hair.

"I have to go to work. But when I get back, we'll play, alright?"

Kanji stood before the mirror, the soft sound of fabric rustling as he began changing into his uniform. His uniform, as sleek as it was practical, was all black-tailored with a high collar that gave it a military edge. Silver trimmings ran along the seams, adding a touch of formality.

The jacket hugged his frame, and the pants were tight, designed for both agility and intimidation. It was the uniform of someone who was used to being in control, and Kanji wore it like second skin.

I watched him quietly, my eyes drifting as I thought about my brother's solitary life.

"Kanji… you never talk about anyone. Don't you have any friends?"

Kanji didn't respond, his hands deftly adjusting his uniform. Saku raised an eyebrow, pressing further.

"You're always late… Are you dating someone?"

Kanji didn't give me an answer, though his lips curled slightly, a small amused smirk.

"No, I'm not dating anyone. And I'm not late. I have… responsibilities."

I tilted my head, trying to remember the name of the only person Kanji ever seemed to mention.

"What was that person's name again… Shika? Shin? Shina?"

I muttered with a frown, trying and failing to recall.

"Ugh, I can never remember."

Kanji finished straightening his uniform, glancing down at Saku for a brief moment. He ruffled my hair, his expression softening just for an instant.

"I'll be back soon. Playtime's still on the schedule."

My eyes lit up.

"You promise?"

"I swear," Kanji said, extending his pinky.

I, grinning, wrapped my pinky around Kanji's, sealing the promise. At that moment, it felt like just another ordinary day.

Little did I know that promise would never be kept.

Kanji left the room, and I waved enthusiastically from the doorway. But as Kanji stepped outside, something in the air shifted. A cold, unnatural stillness spread across the land. My heart skipped a beat, instincts screaming that something was wrong.

Kanji froze mid-step, his body stiffening. He turned back, meeting my gaze.

Suddenly—

BOOM!

The world exploded in a deafening roar. The very ground beneath us trembled, and a blast of heat and force ripped through the house. The walls shattered, windows exploded, and flames shot into the air. I was thrown to the floor, the shockwave reverberating through my body. The house, our home, was obliterated in an instant. Smoke and dust filled the air, choking him.

Kanji stood, scorched but alive. His chest heaved as he looked around frantically, his eyes searching for me.

"Saku!"

His voice was raw, filled with a desperation I had never heard before. But there was no response.

Just as Kanji's legs pushed him forward, ready to search through the wreckage, a voice. A voice that sent chills crawling down his spine, spoke.

"Found you."

The words sliced through the air, low, guttural, and dripping with venom. Kanji's body stiffened. He knew that voice. He knew exactly who it was.

A dark silhouette emerged from the smoke. It was cloaked in shadow, its features indistinct yet menacing. The presence it radiated was suffocating, like it belonged to something far older, far darker than anything Kanji had ever faced. The air grew colder, thick with malice.

Kanji's expression darkened, his lips curling into a snarl. Fear? It was there, but beneath it anger. He knew this figure and the terrors it came with.

I coughed violently as I forced myself up, my breath coming in ragged gasps. My body trembled, not from pain, but from sheer disbelief. One moment, everything had been peaceful. The next… nothing but destruction. My home, the fields, the sky above, all shrouded in dust and ruin.

"Kanji?"

My voice was hoarse as I called out. I could barely hear myself over the ringing in my ears.

Then I felt it.

A suffocating pressure settled over the land, unlike anything I had ever known. It wasn't just heavy, it was overwhelming, oppressive, like the air itself had turned to stone. My instincts screamed at me to run, but my body refused to move.

Through the fading dust, I finally spotted Kanji. My brother stood frozen, eyes locked ahead, fists clenched. But he wasn't just staring into the destruction, he was staring at something inside it.

And then it appeared.

A formless darkness.

It stood tall, humanoid in shape, but its body was void of any features, no skin, no face. Only two burning, crimson eyes pierced through the emptiness, radiating nothing but pure, murderous intent.

A force that should not exist.

My blood ran cold as Kanji finally spoke, his voice quiet, yet firm.

"…Zara."

With a deep breath, Kanji shifted into his fighting stance. His left hand extended forward, his right curled into a fist, drawn back. A stance meant to defend, but also to strike.

I had never seen him this serious before.

Zara didn't move. But then its body shifted.

Blades long, jagged, and razor-sharp, began to emerge from its back, writhing and twisting like living whips. The same dark, unnatural substance that made up its body stretched and formed them, as though the creature's very flesh had molded into weapons.

And then, they lashed forward.

Kanji's body reacted instantly. In a blur, he dodged, sidestepping the attack with practiced ease. The whips struck the ground, leaving deep scars in the earth where he had just stood. In the same motion, Kanji countered a downward punch, raw force exploding from his fist.

The impact sent shockwaves through the earth, shattering the ground beneath him, creating a crater that swallowed dust and debris.

But Zara did not falter.

Instead, the creature's whips moved faster, striking with speed and precision that far surpassed before.

Kanji adapted, evading with sharp movements, reading Zara's attacks. But then a single graze. A thin red line formed on his cheek where one of the whips had sliced past him.

For a moment, everything stilled. Then Kanji grinned. His smirk stretched wide, eyes glinting with something wild, something thrilled. His breath came out slow, measured, as he wiped the blood from his cheek with the back of his hand. For the first time, in a long time… he had found a worthy opponent.

"Now…" he exhaled, his body relaxing into stance once more, flames of excitement burning in his eyes.

"I can get serious."

Kanji's fingers twitched, then ignited. From the palm of his open right hand, fire erupted, swirling into existence like it had been waiting for this very moment. The heat distorted the air around it, casting wild flickers of light across his sharp, battle-hardened expression. His eyes, already burning with excitement, now reflected the very flames that roared to life in his grasp.

Then he charged.

The force of his step cracked the ground beneath him. In an instant, he hurled a fireball straight at Zara's whips. BOOM! The explosion was deafening, a shockwave tearing through the battlefield. Amidst the flames, Kanji vanished.

Before the smoke could even settle, he was there.

His arms, now completely engulfed in fire, collided with Zara's whips. The battlefield ignited with every impact, sparks and embers scattering through the air like a deadly firestorm. Speed. Power. Precision. Each clash shook the earth, the sheer force of their battle growing more intense with every strike.

To me, it was unreal. My brother, holding his own against a monster. The fiery streaks left in Kanji's wake blurred against the night, his movements so fast they looked like flaming fireworks exploding in midair.

And then, they moved. Like two storms locked in combat, they tore through the battlefield, their fight spanning across the land, uprooting trees, shattering boulders, turning everything in their path to ruin. Their speed was unmatched, their clashes sending devastating shockwaves that echoed for miles.

Then, they hit the mountain.

A split second later, it burst.

The entire peak of the mountain shattered under the force of their battle, rocks and debris raining down like a collapsing kingdom. The explosion sent another wave of fire across the sky, lighting up the darkness in a breathtaking, apocalyptic display.

But Kanji wasn't done.

Through the chaos, he closed the distance.

Faster.

Stronger.

With a sharp inhale, he obliterated Zara's whips, tearing through them like paper. A heartbeat later, he was there. Zara barely had time to react before…BOOM.

Kanji's fist drove into its gut like a meteor, the force sending shockwaves across the battlefield. Zara's form bent inward from the sheer impact, the very air around them distorting from the force.

Then, another fireball.

This one was different. Bigger. Hotter.

The fire howled. It wasn't just a fireball, it was a sun, burning with unrelenting destruction.

BOOOOOM!

The ground split. The sky flared. The explosion dug into the earth, leaving behind a massive, smoldering crater, as if a meteor had just struck the battlefield.

I, coughing, barely regaining my vision, squinted through the smoke.

And then, I saw it.

Kanji.

Standing tall.

Zara.

Down.

For the first time since its existence, Zara felt something it had never known before…dread. As it looked up through the smoke, it didn't see just a warrior. It saw a superior being. A force of destruction. A power it should have never challenged.

And Kanji, standing over his fallen enemy, fire still raging around him, looked down with a gaze so cold, so absolute, it sent shivers through the very void that was Zara's existence. Then, with a voice filled with authority, edged with power, Kanji spoke.

"Checkmate."

That single word hung in the air.

Final. Absolute. Unshakable.

A declaration that Zara would never forget. And neither would anyone else.

Zara, consumed by pure rage, refused to accept defeat at the hands of a mere human. His whips, once controlled, now wild and unchained, burst outward, shredding everything in their path. The battlefield crumbled. The very air trembled with each devastating lash.

Kanji instinctively leaped back, barely avoiding the destruction, his eyes narrowing as Zara's fury boiled over.

"ME!? LORD ZARA!? LOSE TO A MERE HUMAN?!"

Zara's voice was deafening, shaking the ground as his monstrous form pulsed with overwhelming power.

"A MERE HUMAN?!"

Then, he attacked.

Kanji barely had time to react before Zara vanished. His whips came at blinding speed, their strength now monstrous. Each strike faster. Heavier. Stronger.

Kanji dodged, but only barely.

His body burned with exhaustion, his movements slowing. Too fast… Too strong… But still, he fought back. His flames roared with each counterattack, landing blows that only enraged Zara further.

And then, Zara saw me.

Saku.

Kanji's blood ran cold. I barely had time to react before Zara's whips shot toward me.

I saw it.

My death.

Time slowed.

But in that split second, Kanji moved.

With an explosion of fire, Kanji snatched me away just as the whips obliterated the ground where I had been standing.

Zara froze.

Then, he smirked.

He had found it.

Kanji's weakness.

His glowing eyes flickered with amusement as he replayed what he had just heard.

"Brother?"

A realization hit him.

"Another member?"

Kanji's body stiffened. His expression turned to pure fear.

"He's not!" Kanji snapped, shaking his head.

"Saku is just a friend! That's all!"

I, barely able to stand, looked up at him confused. But before I could say a word Zara attacked again. This time, he wasn't aiming for Kanji. He was aiming for me. Kanji roared in fury.

"Saku, RUN!"

But the battle had shifted. Now, Zara had the advantage. Kanji's exhaustion was setting in. His movements slower, his flames weaker. Zara pressed forward, whips slamming into him over and over, driving him back.

And then, it happened.

A deafening explosion.

For a brief moment, I thought Kanji had won. But then, I heard it. A guttural cough.

My heart dropped.

The smoke cleared.

And there Kanji stood, with a whip pierced straight through his chest. My breath hitched.

"No…"

Kanji's knees threatened to buckle. Blood dripped from his lips. His body trembled, but he didn't fall.

Instead, he lifted his head, eyes burning like fire itself. Zara, reveling in his triumph, let his whips surge toward me once more. I squeezed my eyes shut.

This was it.

And then…I felt it.

Heat.

Blazing, all-consuming protective heat.

I opened my eyes. Kanji stood before me. Between me and death itself. His hand gripped the whip impaling his chest and burned it to ash. His eyes, fierce and unwavering, locked onto Zara.

Then, he spoke.

"You can destroy my home. You can stab me. But touch Saku…"

His flames erupted.

The ground split beneath him. The air trembled under the pressure of his power. Sparks danced around his body like embers from an inferno. And then, his voice dropped.

"…and I'll make you pay."

My tears streaming down my face, whispered his name. Kanji stood unshaken. Unyielding. His flames surged, coiling around his form like a dragon ready to strike. His breath was heavy. His power unmatched.

"Saku," Kanji said without looking back.

"Once I move, run. Run and don't look back."

I clenched my fists, my heart screaming against the command.

But I ran.

And behind me…the final battle began.

Zara grinned.

"So you're finally taking me seriously, huh?"

His teeth gleamed as his monstrothus voice boomed,

"INTERESTING!"

Kanji then breathed heavily, and lightning streaked through the air, dancing with the flames around him.

"Fire element, Fourth form…"

He then dashed forward, and as the two fighters began to clash, the impact sent out a deafening shockwave. Sparks of electricity flickered within the storm of fire and darkness. The ground cracked beneath them as the force of their attacks grew stronger.

Then, in an instant, a massive nuclear-like explosion erupted, engulfing nearly half of the forest. The sky flashed white for a brief moment before being swallowed by a sea of fire and lightning.

The explosion reached and hit me as I ran, causing me to lose consciousness. When I woke up… everything was gone.

The battlefield reduced to rubble. Faint flickers of flame danced over the charred ruins. The scent of smoke and blood filled the air. And then, my heart froze.

I searched, screaming my brother's name. And then, I found him.

Kanji.

Lying on the ground. Lifeless. My breath hitched.

"Kanji?"

No response.

A choked sob escaped my lips.

"Wake up… Kanji, wake up. If you think this is a joke, it's not funny."

Still… no response.

My body shook. Tears fell freely, mixing with the ash and dirt.

"You said we'd play together… you promised…"

Nothing.

No warmth. No flame. No voice. Just silence.

And then…

"KANJIIIIIIIIII!"

The scream shattered the stillness of the ruined battlefield.

And in that moment… My world turned to darkness.

And that… was the darkest day of my life.
