Chapter 25 - THE SONG OF STEEL AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF A NEW CITY

The next morning, a rhythmic and fierce sound, never before heard in the depths of the forest, began to echo.

Shhhhk... Shhhhk... Shhhhk...

Barun and Koram stood on opposite sides of a massive pine tree, pulling the double-handled steel crosscut saw bought from Aethelgard back and forth with perfect synchronization. After the brute force of the mining pickaxe, watching this pure steel slice through the thick trunk like butter was an absolute joy. Barun's muscles tensed with every pull, and colossal trees fell into the snow one after another with thunderous crashes. In just a few hours, we had harvested enough thick timber to expand our shelter and build a barn. The song of the steel was the first true declaration of our sovereignty over this forest.

While this heavy labor continued outside, a completely different, delicate life was sprouting inside the shelter. Lira had taken the large clay pots we had fired in our kiln and placed them in the warmest corners of the shelter, directly over the underfloor heating pipes. After filling them with dark soil gathered from the forest, she carefully planted her precious nomad seeds.

"The ground outside might be frozen solid," Lira said, her eyes gleaming as she watered the pots. "But these hot stones beneath our feet are like the southern summer sun to these seeds. In a few weeks, this place will be filled with fresh green sprouts."

When evening fell and everyone gathered around the hearth, exhausted but deeply satisfied, the atmosphere inside the shelter was as bright as the two silver coins left by yesterday's merchants. We gathered around a large animal hide spread across the table.

"We shouldn't just expand the shelter," I said, breaking the silence. I couldn't forget the awe on the faces of those merchants. "Those travelers paid us 2 pure silver just for a bowl of stew and a warm floor. The road between Aethelgard and the other kingdoms is long and treacherous. If we turn this place into not just a hideout, but a rest stop... no, a small trade hub, we will stop hiding in the woods and start building our own kingdom."

The engineer's spark reignited in Koram's eyes. He immediately grabbed a piece of charred wood from the fire and began drawing lines on the hide. "If you want a trade hub, you need order," he said in a commanding tone. "You can't walk in the mud. We will lay a main stone road from the inner side of the trench all the way to the fields. And this setup of everyone sleeping crammed under one roof ends now. Everyone will get their own house, which will double as a shop for their trade."

With the piece of charcoal, Koram sketched four distinct structures on the hide. We were no longer just making a shelter; we were drawing a real city blueprint:

Lira's Botany and Apothecary: A greenhouse-shop designed to receive maximum light, built directly over a concentrated cluster of hot water pipes. She would sell fresh vegetables and rare medicinal herbs in the dead of winter.Barun's Butcher Shop: The number of rabbits in our coop had grown completely out of control. Barun wouldn't just be cutting wood anymore; he would run a shop to professionally butcher and sell this massive supply of meat.Koram's Leather and Tailoring Store: Thanks to the professional sewing kit from Aethelgard and Koram's military precision, raw pelts would be transformed into highly sought-after winter armor and expensive cloaks. The Main Restaurant (The Tavern): Our original main building would be converted into a luxurious, legendary, floor-heated tavern run by MC and Eliz—the place where the silver coins would truly flow.

The plan looked so perfect that we couldn't suppress our excitement as we stared at the sketches on the hide. With its stone roads, smoking chimneys, and bustling shops, this was no longer just "Essence Haven." It was the blueprint for the brightest trade city of the future.

(System Note: Due to the rabbits reproducing exponentially, constantly overflowing the coop, and consuming ungodly amounts of fodder, the settlement council has ceased tracking the animal population individually. Animals are now classified as an infinite "economic resource and food stock." Only human population will be tracked moving forward.)
