Chapter 38 - THE SEALED PAST AND VOWS OF LOYALTY

The rhythmic thud of pickaxes against the frozen earth was interrupted by a sharp, metallic clang. Near the south wing of the new perimeter, the workers had struck something that wasn't stone or root. It was a massive, obsidian-black block engraved with glowing blue veins. As Koram cleaned the dirt away, his face went pale. "This isn't just rubble, Mayor," he whispered. "This is an Ancient Seal. These lands weren't empty before we arrived; we are building our fortress on top of something very old and very powerful."

While the discovery of the seal sent ripples of curiosity through the workforce, I had a much more personal matter to attend to. That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon—painting the endless snow in hues of violet and crimson—Eliz and I stood atop the newly finished Grain Silo. Looking down at the smoking chimneys, the children playing near the heated park, and the soldiers drilling in the courtyard, we saw more than just a settlement. We saw a home.

"We aren't just surviving anymore, are we?" Eliz asked, her hand slipping into mine. "We've built a world out of ice."

I turned to her, feeling the weight of the silver ring Koram had helped me forge in secret. I didn't need a cathedral or a priest. In the middle of this brutal winter, under the watch of the mountains, I asked her to stay by my side forever—not just as my partner in command, but as my wife. The smile that broke across her face was brighter than any slime-light or torch we had ever lit.

When we announced our decision in the tavern later that night, the cheers from the 30 residents drowned out the howling wind outside. Lira brought out her finest herbal brews, and Barun served the best cuts of smoked meat. Even the 7 new mercenaries, usually grim and silent, stood up to raise their mugs. They weren't just following a contractor anymore; they were celebrating the union of their King and Queen.

As the night ended, I looked at the Ancient Seal again. Our future was now tied to this land, for better or for worse. We were no longer a group of refugees. We were a dynasty in the making.
