Chapter 17 - Doors That Wouldn’t Open

Stephanie and Maya walked side by side along the busy street.

The city felt different when you had nowhere to go.

Every building they passed looked like it belonged to someone else's life — people with jobs, homes, and places they were expected to be.

Stephanie adjusted the strap of her small bag on her shoulder.

"So… where do we start?" she asked.

Maya pointed toward a small café across the street.

"There."

The café was already busy with customers. The smell of coffee and warm bread floated into the air as they stepped inside.

A man stood behind the counter wiping a glass.

Maya approached him confidently.

"Excuse me, sir," she said politely. "Do you need any help? We can clean tables or wash dishes."

The man looked at them for a moment.

His eyes moved from Maya to Stephanie.

Then he shook his head.

"You girls look too young."

"We can work hard," Maya insisted.

"Sorry," the man replied, already turning away. "Try somewhere else."

The rejection stung more than Stephanie expected.

They stepped back outside.

"Well," Maya muttered, forcing a small shrug. "That's one."

They tried again at a grocery store.

Then a small restaurant.

Then a clothing shop.

Each time, the answer was the same.

No.

By the afternoon, Stephanie's feet were aching.

Her stomach had started to growl again.

She sat down on a low wall near the sidewalk.

"This is harder than I thought," she admitted quietly.

Maya sat beside her.

"Yeah," she said. "People don't trust strangers easily."

Stephanie stared at the ground.

"What if we can't find anything?"

Maya didn't answer immediately.

Before she could respond, a voice suddenly interrupted them.

"Well, well…"

Both girls looked up.

Two young men stood nearby, leaning against a car.

They were older than them, probably in their early twenties.

One of them smirked.

"You girls look lost."

Maya immediately stiffened.

"We're fine," she replied.

The other man stepped a little closer.

"You don't look fine," he said. "Maybe we can help you."

Stephanie felt a small wave of unease.

Something about their smiles felt wrong.

"We don't need help," Maya said firmly.

The first man laughed softly.

"Relax. We're just being friendly."

Stephanie glanced at Maya.

Maya quickly stood up.

"Come on," she said quietly to Stephanie.

They started walking away.

The men laughed behind them but didn't follow.

Stephanie released the breath she had been holding.

"That was scary," she admitted.

Maya nodded.

"Yeah… the streets aren't exactly full of good people."

They continued walking for a while in silence.

Just as the sun began to lower in the sky, they passed a small restaurant near the corner of the street.

The back door was open.

Inside, a middle-aged woman struggled to carry a heavy box.

Without thinking, Maya rushed forward.

"Let me help you," she said.

Stephanie quickly joined her.

Together, they lifted the box and carried it inside.

The woman looked surprised.

"Thank you," she said, slightly out of breath.

Maya wiped her hands on her jeans.

"No problem."

The woman studied them carefully.

"You two looking for work?"

Stephanie and Maya exchanged a quick glance.

Hope flickered in Stephanie's chest.

"Yes," Maya answered quickly.

The woman sighed.

"Well… I can't promise much."

"But I might need help washing dishes tonight."

Stephanie's eyes widened slightly.

It wasn't much.

But it was something.

And right now…

something was all they needed.
