The celebration dinner at Midsummer House was now in full swing.
Soft music floated through the elegant dining hall while guests laughed, talked, and congratulated the graduates of the University of Cambridge. Waiters moved gracefully between tables carrying trays of sparkling drinks and beautifully plated dishes.
At one of the larger tables sat two elderly couples.
Adrian's grandparents.
And beside them, their longtime friends Stephanie's paternal grandparents, the Larentos.
Adrian's grandparents were cheerful, enjoying the evening and chatting proudly about their grandson's achievements.
But the Larentos were unusually quiet.
Stephanie's grandmother found herself glancing across the room again.
And again.
Her husband noticed.
"You're still looking at that young lady," he said softly.
She nodded without taking her eyes off Stephanie.
"I don't know why... but there's something about her."
The old man followed her gaze.
Across the room, Stephanie stood beside Adrian while Maya animatedly spoke with a few guests. Stephanie smiled politely, laughing softly at something Maya had said.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then the grandfather let out a quiet breath.
"She reminds me of someone."
His wife looked at him.
"You see it too?"
Before either of them could say another word, Adrian's grandmother noticed where they were looking.
She smiled warmly.
"You're looking at Adrian's girlfriend?"
The Larentos exchanged a brief glance.
"His girlfriend?" Stephanie's grandmother repeated.
"Yes," Adrian's grandmother replied happily. "This is the first time we're meeting her."
Curious now, Adrian's grandfather also looked toward Stephanie.
His pleasant smile slowly faded.
"...Louis."
The word escaped him almost unconsciously.
The table fell silent.
Stephanie's grandfather gave the slightest nod.
"I thought the same."
Adrian's grandmother looked from Stephanie to her old friends, then back again.
She studied the young woman more carefully this time.
The graceful smile.
The calm expression.
The quiet confidence.
Then something clicked.
"Oh..."
She looked at Stephanie's grandmother.
"I see what you mean."
Stephanie's grandfather smiled sadly.
"It's not only Louis."
He reached for his wife's hand.
"When she was younger..."
He looked at his wife with gentle affection.
"...she looked just like you."
The elderly woman lowered her eyes for a moment, overcome with emotion.
"Our son always resembled me," she whispered.
"And now..."
Her voice trembled.
"So does she."
No one at the table spoke.
They simply watched the young woman across the room.
The resemblance wasn't exact.
It was something deeper.
Something that quietly stirred memories none of them had expected to revisit.
Just then, Adrian appeared beside Stephanie with a bright smile.
He placed a gentle hand against her back.
"Come with me," he said.
"I want you to meet my grandparents."
Stephanie suddenly felt a wave of nervousness.
Meeting his parents had already been intimidating.
Meeting his grandparents somehow felt even more important.
Still, she smiled and nodded.
"Okay."
A few moments later, Adrian led Stephanie toward the table.
"Grandpa, Grandma..."
The four elderly people looked up.
Adrian smiled proudly.
"There's someone I want you all to meet."
He glanced at Stephanie before continuing.
"This is my girlfriend, Stephanie."
For a moment...
Time seemed to stand still.
Up close, the resemblance was impossible to ignore.
Stephanie smiled politely, completely unaware of the emotions rising around the table.
"Good evening," she said warmly.
"It's very nice to meet all of you."
Adrian's grandmother beamed.
"My goodness, you're even more beautiful than Adrian described."
Stephanie smiled shyly.
"Thank you, ma'am."
Adrian's grandfather chuckled.
"Our grandson clearly has excellent taste."
Soft laughter circled the table.
Only the Larentos remained silent.
Stephanie's grandmother slowly reached for Stephanie's hand.
Her touch was gentle.
But it lingered.
She searched the young woman's face as though afraid to blink.
"So..."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"You said your name is Stephanie?"
Stephanie nodded politely.
"Yes, ma'am."
The elderly woman swallowed hard.
Beside her, her husband leaned forward ever so slightly.
He repeated the name under his breath.
"Stephanie..."
He looked at his wife.
She gave the smallest, almost imperceptible nod.
Turning back to Stephanie, he spoke gently.
"May I ask you something, dear?"
"Of course," Stephanie replied with a smile.
The table seemed to fall into complete silence.
Every heartbeat suddenly felt louder.
The old man's voice was calm.
But everyone could hear the emotion beneath it.
"What is your full name?"
