Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

The scholar had not returned. The room felt quieter, heavier, as if holding its breath with them. The bundle of books lay open, their pages filled with Azazel's encoded account, already partially translated.

Eliza unrolled the next scroll. Its edges were frayed, and the surface was dense with tightly packed letters, arranged in seemingly endless sequences. "This one isn't a story," she said softly. "It looks… systematic."

Marshall leaned over. "Triplets," he observed. "Grouped the same way as the previous manuscripts. But… what does each set mean?"

Eliza frowned. "I don't know yet. We'll have to figure it out."

Carefully, they wrote down the first sequence:

KTR – VEL – NQA

Marshall pointed. "Let's try decoding slowly. Maybe patterns will emerge."

They worked methodically, grouping letters in threes, writing down tentative translations as they noticed repetitions. Some letters seemed to indicate direction, others terrain or landmark, and some repeated with subtle differences. Slowly, meaning began to emerge.

First triplet: KTR → possibly a temple marker

Second triplet: VEL → seems related to orientation, maybe east or west

Third triplet: NQA → could be a nearby landmark, a river or boundary

As they continued, lines after lines revealed more:

BMS – QLD – TRF → higher ground, stones or hills, hidden access

ZPN – KLM – XRT → westward direction, buried or unstable terrain

TRK – VSN – LQP → central point, convergence of the others

Eliza scribbled notes beside each line, tentative at first, then more confident as the patterns repeated across the scroll.

Marshall leaned back, pointing at the last sequences: "Look. The symbols along the margins—dots, lines, angles—maybe they refine the location or access. They repeat with certain triplets."

Eliza added the marginal notes carefully, matching them to each temple:

East temple: "Beyond a river, near the second crossing point"

North temple: "Elevated stones, narrow ascent"

West temple: "Buried beneath shifting earth"

South temple: "Below ground, entry concealed"

Center temple: "Where all directions converge"

Once they finished translating all the triplets, the last page of the scroll drew their attention. Faint sketches and markings hinted at something larger.

Eliza leaned in, tracing the lines with her finger. "It's… a map."

Marshall's eyes widened. "The locations, the directions… all connected."

Careful not to disturb the fragile page, Eliza took out her phone and photographed the map. The colors of the markings—blue for rivers, red for elevations, faint green for paths—stood out clearly in the image.

She lowered the phone. "We have it now. A complete network of the temples, all locations and alignments. That's everything on this scroll."

Marshall exhaled slowly. "So… next step is finding them."

Eliza nodded. "We'll need to plan carefully. But first… we leave this place."

They gathered the scrolls and the books, tucking them securely into the bag. The weight of what they had uncovered pressed on them, but the map gave clarity—a goal, a direction.

As they stepped toward the door, Marshall glanced back at the scroll. "Do you think we're ready?"

Eliza didn't answer immediately. Her eyes were fixed on the photo of the map, the temples, the paths. She knew the journey ahead would be perilous, each temple hidden, each direction guarded by centuries of design.

The scholar had not returned. They were on their own.

And now, with the map in their hands, the search for the temples would begin.

But the shadows outside the room seemed longer than before, and the wind rattled the window panes with a low, haunting whisper—like a warning.

Somewhere, hidden beyond sight, the first temple awaited.

And as they stepped into the corridor, the adventure—and danger—was only beginning.
