Chapter 36 - CHAPTER 35 — The First Real Victory

The palace woke to a strange tension.

Not chaos.

Not noise.

Just a shift — subtle, but unmistakable.

Lin Yue felt it the moment she stepped out of her chamber.

Bai Rui approached with a bow, her expression composed.

"My Lady, something has happened in the Orchid Palace."

Lin Yue's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Xue?"

"Yes," Bai Rui said. "One of her maids was caught spreading the rumor about you."

Lin Yue didn't smile.

She didn't gloat.

She simply nodded.

"Who caught her?"

"Ming He," Bai Rui replied. "He questioned her quietly. She confessed."

Lin Yue's voice remained soft.

"And where is she now?"

"In the Empress Dowager's custody."

That was all Lin Yue needed to hear.

The Empress Dowager did not tolerate servants who lied.

Especially not servants who lied badly.

The Summons

A eunuch arrived shortly after.

"Noble Lady Lin, the Empress Dowager requests your presence."

Xiao An stepped forward, bowing.

"My Lady, your cloak."

No questions.

No panic.

Just quiet support.

Lin Yue accepted it and walked toward the Phoenix Hall, her steps steady.

The Phoenix Hall

The Empress Dowager sat at the center, her expression unreadable.

The Empress stood beside her, calm but alert.

And to the left —

Noble Consort Xue.

Her face was pale, her posture stiff.

Lin Yue bowed.

"Greetings, Your Majesty."

The Empress Dowager gestured for her to rise.

"Lin Yue," she said, "the maid who spread the rumor has confessed."

Lin Yue lowered her gaze respectfully.

"I see."

"She claimed she acted alone," the Empress Dowager continued. "But her story was inconsistent."

Xue's fingers tightened around her sleeve.

The Empress Dowager's voice sharpened.

"Xue, do you deny involvement?"

Xue bowed deeply.

"Your Majesty, I would never—"

"Enough," the Empress Dowager said. "I did not summon you to hear excuses."

Xue fell silent.

The Empress Dowager turned to Lin Yue.

"You handled the situation with restraint. You did not retaliate. You did not panic. You did not complain."

Lin Yue bowed her head.

"It was not my place to cause disturbance."

The Empress Dowager's eyes softened — just slightly.

"And yet," she said, "your calmness revealed the truth more effectively than any accusation."

Lin Yue said nothing.

The Empress Dowager continued,

"From this day forward, the Moonlit Courtyard will receive additional privileges. You have proven yourself worthy of trust."

Xue's eyes widened — a flicker of disbelief, then fury.

Lin Yue bowed deeply.

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

The Empress Dowager waved her hand.

"You may go."

Lin Yue turned to leave.

But as she passed Xue, she felt the other woman's gaze — sharp, burning, humiliated.

Lin Yue didn't look back.

She didn't need to.

She had won.

Outside The Hall

Bai Rui and Ming He waited at the entrance.

Xiao An stood behind them, composed and proud.

"My Lady," Bai Rui said softly, "the palace is already whispering."

Lin Yue raised an eyebrow.

"About what?"

"That you defeated Noble Consort Xue without lifting a finger."

Lin Yue's expression remained serene.

"Let them whisper."

Ming He bowed.

"My Lady, your victory was elegant."

Lin Yue shook her head gently.

"It was not a victory. It was clarity."

But even she knew that wasn't entirely true.

This was the moment the palace realized:

Lin Yue was not someone to be pushed aside.

The Emperor Arrives

That evening, the emperor entered the Moonlit Courtyard with a rare expression — pride.

"You handled today well," he said.

Lin Yue bowed.

"I only did what was necessary."

He stepped closer, his voice low.

"You did more than that. You showed the palace who you are."

Lin Yue looked up at him, her eyes calm.

"And who is that?"

He smiled — warm, deep, sincere.

"A woman who stands without fear."

Lin Yue's breath caught.

He continued,

"And a woman I am falling for more than I should."

Later That Night

Lin Yue stood beneath the magnolia tree, the petals drifting softly around her.

Her staff gathered quietly behind her — loyal, disciplined, respectful.

Bai Rui spoke softly.

"My Lady, today was your first true victory."

Lin Yue looked at the moon, her voice steady.

"It will not be the last."

And for the first time, the palace felt her presence.

Not as a quiet girl.

Not as a target.

Not as a rumor.

But as a rising force.

A woman to be respected.

A woman to be feared.

A woman the emperor was beginning to love deeply.
