Chapter 45 - CHAPTER 44 — Lin Yue’s Growing Influence

The palace woke to a strange new atmosphere.

Not fear.

Not chaos.

Something subtler.

Awareness

People were aware of Lin Yue now — aware of her calmness, her intelligence, her connection to the emperor, and the Empress Dowager's approval.

And awareness, in the palace, was the first step toward influence.

The Morning Court

Lin Yue walked through the garden path with Bai Rui and Xiao An behind her.

As she passed, servants bowed deeply — deeper than before.

"Good morning, Noble Lady Lin."

"Blessings upon your day, My Lady."

Their voices trembled with respect.

Lin Yue nodded politely, her expression serene.

Bai Rui leaned closer.

"My Lady, the servants are treating you differently."

Lin Yue didn't slow her pace.

"They are cautious."

"Cautious," Bai Rui said, "is the first sign of fear."

Lin Yue's lips curved slightly.

"And fear," she murmured, "is the first sign of power."

The Empress's Request

A palace maid approached, bowing.

"My Lady, the Empress requests your presence in the Jade Pavilion."

Lin Yue exchanged a glance with Bai Rui.

"The Empress?" Bai Rui whispered. "She rarely summons anyone privately."

Lin Yue nodded.

"Let us go."

When she entered the Jade Pavilion, the Empress was arranging scrolls on a table.

"Lin Yue," she said, "come sit."

Lin Yue bowed and took her seat.

The Empress studied her for a moment.

"You have handled yourself well these past days."

Lin Yue lowered her gaze.

"I only acted as I believed proper."

The Empress smiled faintly.

"That is why I called you. I need someone with a clear mind."

Lin Yue blinked — surprised.

"Your Majesty?"

The Empress handed her a scroll.

"This is a list of palace servants. I want your opinion on who should be reassigned."

Lin Yue hesitated.

"Your Majesty… I am not qualified to—"

"You are," the Empress said firmly.

"You see people clearly. You judge fairly. And you do not act out of pettiness."

Lin Yue fell silent.

The Empress continued,

"Your influence is growing, Lin Yue. Use it wisely."

Lin Yue bowed her head.

"I will."

The Palace Reacts

By midday, the palace had learned that Lin Yue had been invited to advise the Empress.

The whispers spread quickly.

"She's advising the Empress now…"

"She's rising too fast…"

"She must be careful…"

"She's becoming powerful…"

"She's dangerous…"

Lin Yue walked through the corridor, her steps steady.

Concubines bowed deeply.

Senior maids avoided meeting her eyes.

Eunuchs stepped aside respectfully.

Bai Rui whispered,

"My Lady, they fear offending you."

Lin Yue shook her head gently.

"They fear what they do not understand."

"And they do not understand you," Bai Rui said.

Lin Yue's eyes softened.

"Good."

The Emperor's Visit

That evening, the emperor entered her courtyard with a thoughtful expression.

"Lin Yue."

She rose and bowed,

"Your Majesty."

He approached her, his gaze warm.

"I heard the Empress asked for your counsel."

Lin Yue nodded.

"She did."

"And you accepted?"

"I did."

The emperor smiled — proud, impressed, deeply moved.

"You are becoming someone important."

Lin Yue looked away.

"I do not seek importance."

"No," he said softly. "But importance seeks you."

She didn't respond.

He stepped closer.

"Lin Yue… I want you to know something."

She looked up.

"You do not rise because of me," he said.

"You rise because of who you are."

Her breath caught.

He continued, voice low and sincere.

"I only see what the palace is beginning to see."

Lin Yue lowered her gaze.

"Your Majesty… I am grateful. But influence is dangerous."

"Not for you," he said.

"You wield it with grace."

Lin Yue shook her head gently.

"Grace is not enough."

The emperor smiled faintly.

"No. But you have strength too."

She looked at him — calm, steady, quietly moved.

"Do not fall too deeply," she whispered.

He touched her hand lightly.

"I already have."

Later That Night

After he left, Xiao An approached.

"My Lady… the palace respects you now."

Lin Yue looked at the magnolia blossoms drifting in the lantern light.

"Respect is fragile," she said softly.

"It must be earned again and again."

Bai Rui bowed.

"And you will earn it."

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

"I will try."

Because influence was not a gift.

It was a responsibility.

A burden.

A weapon.

And Lin Yue was learning to wield it with elegance.

The palace had begun to fear her,

Now, it was beginning to follow her.
