I spent the first few minutes just staring at the room, trying to convince myself that this was a dream—or some incredibly elaborate hallucination brought on by stress and the sudden trauma of my office death.
It wasn't.
The moment I took a step toward the door, he appeared in the hallway, silent as a shadow. My heart jumped. How did he move so fast? My thoughts betrayed me again. Don't follow me. Don't hurt me.
He smiled—cold, knowing. "I'm not going to hurt you," he said. "But running won't help either. Not in this house… or in this world."
"What world? What's going on?!" I demanded, my voice trembling. Panic clawed at me.
"You're in the mansion of Alpha Kairo," he said, finally offering a name. "And you… are the stand-in omega."
"Stand-in… what?" I whispered, my mind spinning. I remembered a few omegaverse stories from novels, TV dramas, and fanfiction. Omegas, alphas, pack hierarchies… instincts, bonds, and heat cycles. This can't be real.
"You've taken the body of my original omega," he said, his eyes sharp, unflinching. "She's expected back soon, and until then… you are her replacement."
Replacement. The word hit me like a punch. So I wasn't just in a different body. I was a temporary substitute, a lie wrapped in soft skin, set to fool him and everyone else in this mansion.
I swallowed. "And if I… refuse?"
His gaze darkened, and for a moment, I felt like I could see straight through to my soul. "Refusal isn't an option," he said flatly. "You've already been chosen. And besides…" His smirk returned, slow and dangerous. "…I can hear everything you think."
I froze. My worst secret—the plan I had formed the instant I realized I wasn't in my body—popped into my mind: Play along, take his money, and leave. Simple.
His eyes flicked at me, a dangerous glint in them. "Interesting," he said. "So you plan to deceive me. I'll enjoy seeing how long that lasts."
I wanted to die. Or maybe I already had. Both seemed equally plausible.
"Now," he continued, motioning for me to follow him down the grand staircase, "you need to learn the rules of this house. Your survival depends on them."
I followed, each step making my stomach twist in fear and something… else. Desire. Infuriating, confusing desire that made my throat tight and my cheeks warm. I hated it.
The mansion was massive—rooms stretching endlessly, servants moving quietly in the background, subtle displays of wealth everywhere. And at the center of it all… him. Alpha Kairo.
"Rule one," he said, turning to face me in the grand dining hall, "you obey the household rules. No wandering alone. No secrets you think I won't discover. No actions that threaten my territory."
"I… understand," I muttered, voice small.
He studied me for a moment, then leaned closer, so close I could feel the heat radiating off him. "Rule two… you do not underestimate me. And neither your heart nor your body can lie from me. I'll know if you try."
I swallowed hard, suddenly aware of how thin the line between survival and heartbreak had become.
"You'll also learn quickly that in this house…" He paused, eyes locking with mine. "…I am the predator. You… are the prey. But don't worry. Some prey are very good at survival. And very… tempting."
My knees almost buckled. I wanted to run. I wanted to scream. And yet, my body betrayed me, leaning slightly closer to him, caught in the magnetic pull that was impossible to resist.
This was not just a mansion. Not just a new life. It was a cage gilded in desire, danger, and impossible rules. And I was trapped inside with the most dangerous alpha I'd ever met.
