Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: After the silence

The door had barely finished closing before the silence changed.

It wasn't empty anymore.

It was heavy.

I stood there, my wrist still loosely held in Kairo's grip, my thoughts louder than ever—and for once, I wished he couldn't hear them.

I didn't choose… I didn't…

But even I knew that wasn't true.

I had stayed.

And in this world, that meant everything.

"You're still thinking about him."

Kairo's voice was quiet, but it cut through everything.

I looked away. "I'm thinking about what just happened."

"That includes him."

I didn't answer.

Because again—he was right.

A faint exhale escaped him, almost like a sigh, but softer. His grip on my wrist loosened, though he didn't fully let go.

"You hesitate too much," he said.

"And you don't hesitate at all," I shot back.

"That's why you're in this position."

My chest tightened. "You mean trapped?"

His eyes sharpened slightly. "I mean here."

Silence fell.

I didn't like how easily he said that—like this place, this situation, this… connection, was something obvious. Something already decided.

"It's not the same thing," I muttered.

"It is," he replied.

I finally looked at him again. "Then tell me something honestly."

He didn't respond, but his gaze didn't leave mine.

"Why me?"

The question had been building for a while now, sitting at the edge of every thought I tried to suppress.

"You had him," I continued. "The original. The one you were supposed to—"

"I'm not 'supposed' to do anything."

His interruption was immediate.

Firm.

I exhaled slowly. "Then why?"

This time, he didn't answer right away.

And that alone made my heartbeat shift.

Because Kairo didn't hesitate.

Not like this.

His eyes stayed on me, but something deeper moved beneath the surface—something I couldn't read.

"You're different," he said finally.

I frowned. "That's not an answer."

"It is."

"No, it's not. Different how? Anyone can be different."

"Not like you."

My frustration spiked. "You're not making any sense."

A faint hint of amusement touched his expression. "You don't like answers you can't control."

"That's not true."

It is.

I clenched my jaw.

Kairo stepped closer.

Not enough to corner me.

But enough to remind me how easily he could.

"You don't follow this world's rules," he said quietly. "You don't react the way you should. You think about leaving instead of staying. You question things instead of accepting them."

My breath slowed.

"That's normal," I said.

"For you," he replied.

The words lingered.

And for the first time, I understood what he meant.

I didn't belong here.

Not just because of the body.

But because of how I thought.

How I felt.

How I resisted.

"And that makes you… what?" I asked softly.

"Unpredictable."

I blinked.

"That's it?"

"No."

He stepped closer again.

This time, I didn't step back.

"That makes you interesting."

My chest tightened.

"And dangerous."

That part surprised me.

"Dangerous?" I repeated.

"You don't even realize what you're doing," he continued. "But you change things. You make choices that don't fit this world. And because of that…"

His voice lowered slightly.

"…you affect me."

My breath caught.

That was new.

Different.

Real.

"And you don't like that," I said.

A pause.

Then—

"No," he admitted.

The honesty hit harder than anything else.

Kairo, who controlled everything.

Kairo, who read every thought.

Kairo, who never hesitated—

Didn't like not being in control.

And somehow…

I was the reason.

"That's not a good thing," I said quietly.

"I didn't say it was."

Silence settled again.

But this time, it wasn't as suffocating.

It felt…

Closer.

More grounded.

More real.

"Then why keep me here?" I asked.

"If I'm such a problem."

His gaze didn't waver.

"Because I don't want you to leave."

The words were simple.

But they carried weight.

More than anything he had said before.

I swallowed.

"That's not a reason."

"It is for me."

My chest tightened again.

"You're selfish."

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

Just truth.

And somehow…

That made it worse.

I looked away again, my thoughts slipping out before I could stop them.

Then what about him…?

Kairo didn't respond immediately.

And that silence—

It told me everything.

"You're thinking about him again," he said.

"I can't not think about him," I snapped. "He was here first. This was his life."

"And now it's yours."

"It's not!"

My voice came out sharper than I intended.

But I didn't take it back.

"I didn't ask for this life," I continued. "I didn't ask to replace anyone. I didn't ask to be in the middle of whatever this is."

Kairo watched me quietly.

"I just wanted to survive," I finished.

The words felt smaller now.

Weaker.

Because survival wasn't the only thing driving me anymore.

And we both knew it.

"That's not all you want anymore," he said.

I froze.

"Don't."

"Then stop thinking it."

I clenched my fists.

"I can't control my thoughts."

"I can."

"That's the problem!"

The words came out louder this time.

The tension snapped.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then—

Kairo reached out again.

Not for my wrist this time.

But my chin.

Lifting it slightly so I had no choice but to meet his gaze.

"You're right," he said quietly.

My breath caught.

"It is a problem."

His thumb brushed lightly against my jaw.

And my body—

Traitor that it was—

reacted instantly.

"But it's not one I plan to fix."

My chest tightened.

"Kairo—"

"You're not leaving," he said again.

Softer this time.

But no less certain.

"And I'm not letting you pretend this is just about survival anymore."

My heart pounded.

"Then what is it about?"

Silence.

Just for a second.

Then—

"You'll figure it out."

I frowned. "That's not fair."

"I know."

Of course he did.

He always did.

And yet—

He still didn't stop.

His hand lingered for a moment longer before finally dropping.

But the warmth remained.

The tension remained.

Everything remained.

"You should rest," he said.

Like nothing had happened.

Like everything hadn't just shifted again.

I stared at him.

Confused.

Frustrated.

And something else I didn't want to name.

"You're impossible," I muttered.

A faint smile touched his lips.

"I've been told that."

I turned away before I could think too much about that expression.

Before I could think too much about him.

Because the more I did

The harder it became to pretend this wasn't real.

And somewhere deep down…

I was starting to realize something dangerous.

This wasn't just survival anymore.

And if I stayed

If I kept choosing to stay

Then eventually…

I wouldn't be able to leave at all.
