Chapter 66 - Episode 66 : The Grand Meridian

The Dead End Sea

On the fourth morning, the expedition reached the final ridge.

The first travelers who climbed it stopped without speaking.

Below them lay an enormous frozen coastline.

It stretched farther than anyone could see.

Its surface was not completely white.

Great fields of blue ice reflected the morning sky, interrupted by dark cracks where the ocean breathed beneath its frozen surface.

Occasional clouds of mist rose from the fractures.

Far away, something enormous moved beneath the ice.

The shape disappeared before anyone could identify it.

Bardin lowered his instrument.

"Did anyone else see that?"

An Ironhide hunter nodded.

"Yes."

"What was it?"

The hunter shrugged.

"Something that lives here."

Bardin slowly put his instrument away.

"Wonderful."

A few people laughed.

Even after everything they had experienced, the expedition still found ways to remain human.

Dorion looked toward the coastline.

"The road ends here."

One of the Nordfrost guides nodded.

"My grandfather came this far."

"He said there was nothing beyond."

Lirion looked down at his instruments.

"Your grandfather may have been right."

Dorion glanced at him.

"That doesn't sound reassuring."

Lirion turned the device in his hand.

"...about the road."

The device suddenly flickered.

He stopped.

The screen displayed a faint pulse.

Once.

Then nothing.

Lirion looked toward Sorion.

"Sorion."

Sorion had already felt it.

His hand was resting against the bronze compass at his side.

The needle was trembling.

Not pointing east.

Not pointing west.

Not pointing toward any visible landmark.

It pointed downward.

Straight into the frozen earth.

Something Beneath the Road

The expedition established a temporary camp near the ridge.

The scouts searched the coastline while the engineers examined the old road.

Lirion knelt beside the final surviving stone marker.

Snow covered nearly everything.

Only a small portion of its bronze inscription remained visible.

He brushed it clean.

There were symbols.

Not words.

At least not words they could immediately understand.

Lirion studied them.

"These aren't road-distance markings."

Dorion crouched beside him.

"Then what are they?"

"I'm not sure."

Sorion approached.

The compass in his hand began vibrating again.

He touched the stone.

For a moment, the world changed.

He saw the road.

But not as it was now.

He saw it thousands of years ago.

The frozen coastline was gone.

The road continued.

Travelers walked beneath enormous bronze arches.

Machines carried supplies.

Airships hovered overhead.

And at the center of a distant city...

a circular structure glowed.

A doorway.

A Veil Gate.

Then the memory disappeared.

Sorion opened his eyes.

Dorion was watching him.

"You saw something."

Sorion nodded.

"The road didn't end."

Lirion stood immediately.

"Where did it go?"

Sorion looked toward the Dead End Sea.

"Somewhere else."

The Ruins Beneath the Snow

The expedition began digging.

At first, they found nothing.

Then an Ironhide shovel struck metal.

CLANG.

Everyone stopped.

The workers cleared the snow.

Something appeared beneath the ice.

Then another.

Then a wall.

The buried structure continued farther than anyone expected.

By sunset, they had uncovered the entrance to an ancient settlement.

It was not a small outpost.

It had once been a city.

Its towers had collapsed beneath centuries of snow.

Its streets were buried.

Its central plaza had disappeared beneath ice.

But the foundations were still intact.

Lirion walked slowly through the ruins.

"This city was connected to the Founder's Road."

Dorion looked at the buildings.

"Why was it abandoned?"

One of the Nordfrost guides answered.

"The sea."

Lirion looked at him.

"The Dead End Sea rose centuries ago."

"Perhaps the city was buried."

Sorion looked toward the center.

"No."

Everyone turned.

"This city was closed."

The First Disagreement

The discovery created uneasiness.

Several members of the expedition wanted to continue excavating.

Others wanted to leave.

A young engineer pointed toward the buried structures.

"If this was a transportation city, we don't know what could still be active."

Another answered:

"That's exactly why we need to investigate."

"We already know Veyrath once used Veil Gates to invade other cities."

The conversation grew louder.

Dorion stepped between them.

"Enough."

The two engineers stopped.

"We aren't going to destroy something simply because we're afraid of it."

He looked toward the buried city.

"But we aren't going to activate something blindly either."

Lirion nodded.

"We investigate first."

Sorion looked toward the darkness beneath the ruins.

"And we remember what happened here before we decide what happens next."

The group agreed.

The expedition continued.

The Buried Gate

Two days later, they reached the center of the ancient city.

Beneath a collapsed plaza stood a circular structure.

Twelve channels surrounded it.

Twelve empty crystal housings.

At the center was a large vertical ring.

The entire mechanism was covered in frost.

Lirion stared at it.

He slowly walked around the structure.

"This isn't a normal Gate."

Dorion smiled.

"That's what you said about the last strange machine."

"This one is different."

"How?"

Lirion pointed toward the twelve channels.

"It's not connected to one destination."

He looked at the central ring.

"It's connected to many."

Sorion stepped closer.

The bronze compass suddenly pulsed.

THUM.

The Gate answered.

A thin line of silver light appeared inside the ring.

Everyone stepped back.

The light vanished.

Lirion's expression changed.

"It responded to you."

Sorion looked at his hand.

"I didn't activate it."

"No."

Lirion stared at the Gate.

"But something activated it."

The Signal From Aurion

Far away, in Aurion Citadel, the Machine Core pulsed again.

The delegation from Elyndra watched their instruments react.

Caldris looked at the display.

"Another resonance."

His engineer checked the coordinates.

"Northeastern network."

"Where?"

The engineer hesitated.

"Borealis frontier."

Caldris looked toward the map.

"Then the signal reached another Gate."

Back at the Dead End Sea, the buried Gate awakened.

Not completely.

Only enough to reveal itself.

Ancient lights appeared beneath the snow.

One by one.

A line of energy traveled from the central ring into the twelve channels.

Some remained dark.

Some flickered.

One glowed faintly.

Another produced a distorted image before collapsing.

Lirion watched the readings.

"These Gates aren't destroyed."

Dorion looked at him.

"You're certain?"

"Yes."

He pointed toward one of the channels.

"That one is buried."

Another.

"That one has no power."

Another.

"That one has been disconnected."

Then he pointed toward a fourth.

"This one..."

He frowned.

"...was forcibly shut down."

Sorion understood.

"Someone didn't want that road used."

The Shadow of Veyrath

The expedition remembered what they had learned.

Veyrath had once been a conquering civilization.

Its warriors had crossed Veil Gates into other cities.

Some civilizations had fought them.

Others had hidden.

Others had closed their Gates forever.

Lirion examined the ancient shutdown mechanism.

"Whoever operated this knew exactly what they were doing."

Dorion looked toward the ruined city.

"They were afraid."

"Of Veyrath."

Sorion touched the Gate.

A faint memory appeared.

People running.

A Gate closing.

A warning shouted through the plaza.

Then darkness.

The vision ended.

Sorion pulled his hand away.

"They were afraid of an invasion."

Nobody spoke.

The implication was obvious.

The Gate had not necessarily been broken.

It had been closed for protection.

The Decision to Rebuild

That evening, Dorion gathered the expedition leaders.

The ruined city was cold and dark around them.

Only the campfires gave warmth.

"We have a choice."

He pointed toward the buried Gate.

"We can leave it buried."

"Or we can restore it."

A Nordfrost elder spoke first.

"If Veyrath once used these Gates for war, rebuilding them may bring danger."

Lirion answered:

"That danger already exists."

The elder looked at him.

"The ancient network is waking."

He pointed toward the sky.

"Other cities are responding."

"If we don't understand the network, someone else eventually will."

Dorion nodded.

"But we don't open every Gate."

Lirion smiled.

"We repair the system first."

"We identify the destinations."

"We determine which ones are safe."

"And only then do we travel."

Sorion looked toward the Gate.

"One road at a time."

The elder studied the brothers.

Then slowly nodded.

"Then rebuild it."

The Twelve Destinations

Work began the next morning.

For days, the expedition repaired the Gate.

It was slow work.

Some components had to be fabricated.

Others had to be recovered from beneath the ruins.

Several crystal conduits were cracked beyond repair and had to be replaced with materials brought from Borealis.

The ancient machine resisted every attempt to rush it.

So they learned patience.

When the central system finally accepted power...

the twelve channels illuminated.

A vast map appeared above the plaza.

Everyone gathered beneath it.

The first destination appeared.

AURION CITADEL.

The second.

BOREALIS CITADEL.

The third.

SOLARIS SANCTUM.

The Burning Sea.

Then more names appeared.

MIREHAVEN ARCHIVE.

SKYREACH OBSERVATORY.

THALORIN DEPTHS.

VERIDIAN ENCLAVE.

ZYTHON HOLD.

LUMEN GATE.

ECLIPSE FORTRESS.

CRYSTALION PRIME.

And finally...

NEXUS ARK.

The expedition stood beneath the map in silence.

Lirion whispered:

"Twelve cities."

Sorion corrected him.

"Twelve roads."

Not Every Road Was Ready

The Gate began displaying the condition of each destination.

Aurion.

ACTIVE.

Borealis.

ACTIVE.

Solaris.

PARTIAL RESONANCE.

Mirehaven.

DORMANT.

Skyreach.

BURIED.

Thalorin.

NO RESPONSE.

Veridian.

DORMANT.

Zython.

DAMAGED.

Lumen.

SEALED.

Eclipse.

FORCIBLY CLOSED.

Crystalion.

NO RESONANCE.

Nexus.

UNKNOWN.

Lirion stared at the final reading.

"Unknown."

Dorion asked:

"Can we reach it?"

Lirion shook his head.

"Not yet."

Sorion looked at the dark destinations.

"They're not destroyed."

Lirion nodded.

"Most of them aren't."

"Then we'll find them."

The Third Gate

The Solaris channel began flickering.

Lirion adjusted the Gate.

"There's enough resonance."

The central ring slowly turned.

The twelve channels dimmed.

One remained illuminated.

SOLARIS SANCTUM.

The Veil opened.

The frozen air of Borealis suddenly met a wave of warmth.

Beyond the Gate was a vast golden desert.

The sunlight was almost blinding.

Far across the horizon stood enormous structures.

Solar towers.

Bronze walls.

Crystal energy collectors.

A city waited in the distance.

The Burning Sea.

Nobody moved.

They simply stared.

After everything they had endured in the frozen north...

the sight of sunlight felt almost unreal.

Bardin finally whispered:

"That's not Borealis."

Lirion smiled.

"No."

Dorion looked at the Gate.

"We haven't even taken one step."

Sorion watched the distant city.

"But the road has."

The New Outpost

They did not immediately leave.

The expedition still had work to do.

The ruined city beside the Dead End Sea had become important.

They repaired its defensive systems.

Restored its shelters.

Marked its dangerous areas.

Salvaged useful machines.

And established a permanent expedition outpost.

The Veil Gate would remain here.

A bridge between the frozen frontier and the civilizations beyond.

The old city had once been destroyed because of war.

Now...

people from many different clans were rebuilding it together.

Ironhide craftsmen repaired its structures.

Nordfrost workers restored its heating systems.

Iron Legion engineers stabilized the Gate.

Sunscorched specialists studied its energy conduits.

Veilkeeper scouts guarded the ruins.

And the three brothers stood at the center of it all.

Not as conquerors.

Not as rulers.

But as travelers.

That evening, Sorion walked alone through the ancient streets.

The Gate glowed behind him.

His compass remained quiet.

For the first time in days, its needle did not point anywhere.

He looked toward the ruined buildings.

There were still questions.

Why had this city been destroyed?

Why had its Gate been closed?

Why had so many destinations been deliberately sealed?

And what had happened to the civilizations connected by these roads?

The answers were somewhere ahead.

But not tonight.

Tonight, the expedition had found something more important.

A road.

A road that could carry them farther than their feet ever could.

A road that connected the Twelve Cities.

A road that had survived wars, forgetting, and centuries of silence.

And somewhere beyond that road...

something from the ancient world was waiting to be found.

They did not yet know what it was.

They did not know why the journey had brought them here.

They only knew that the path had opened.

Tomorrow...

they would take it.

Toward Solaris Sanctum.

Toward the Burning Sea.

And toward another forgotten chapter of the world.
