Chapter 68 - Episode 68 : Grand Meridian Reborn

Morning came over Grand Meridian with a light that none of the expedition had seen in Borealis.

The frozen mountains remained visible in the distance, their peaks shining beneath the morning sun.

But the harbor was changing.

For the first time in many years, water moved through its ancient channels.

The Meridian pumps had awakened.

The old gates beneath the harbor opened one after another, allowing seawater to return to the forgotten docks.

Ancient channels filled.

Water rushed beneath the bridges.

The empty berths became reflections of the sky.

And the Grand Meridian Ship Dock began to live again.

Lirion stood on the central control platform, watching thousands of systems come online.

"Maritime systems at forty-three percent."

Dorion looked over the railing.

"That much already?"

"I repaired the primary control network."

Sorion looked toward the harbor.

"What about the rest?"

Lirion smiled.

"That is the problem."

He pointed toward the enormous city.

"Grand Meridian is much bigger than the harbor."

THE FULL RESTORATION

For the next several days, the expedition worked.

Everyone contributed.

The Nordfrost engineers repaired the water channels.

Ironhide craftsmen reinforced the old docks.

Iron Legion engineers restored the cargo lifts.

Sunscorched Reveland specialists repaired the ancient energy conduits.

Veilkeeper scouts mapped the surrounding ruins.

Bardin and the Shrouden Swamp travelers helped establish communication between the different groups.

And Lirion—

Lirion worked almost without stopping.

As the Machine Lord of Aurion Citadel, he understood the ancient machinery better than anyone else.

His technomagik abilities allowed him to communicate directly with the city's machine network.

One system after another awakened.

GRAND MERIDIAN MARITIME NETWORK — ONLINE.

CARGO TERMINALS — ONLINE.

SHIP REPAIR FACILITIES — ONLINE.

NAVIGATION SYSTEM — ONLINE.

FRESHWATER CONVERSION — ONLINE.

AGRICULTURAL EXCHANGE TERMINALS — ONLINE.

AIRSHIP DOCKING SYSTEM — ONLINE.

Then came the most important message.

GRAND MERIDIAN TRANSIT NETWORK — FULL RESTORATION COMPLETE.

The harbor became silent.

Then every light in the city turned on.

Thousands of ancient lamps illuminated the waterfront.

The massive cranes moved.

The airship towers activated.

The ancient transit rails glowed.

And the central Meridian monument began rotating.

Land.

Sea.

Sky.

Veil.

Four systems.

One city.

Grand Meridian was alive again.

A CITY BECOMES A SETTLEMENT

The expedition leaders gathered in the central plaza.

They had expected to find ruins.

Instead, they had found a functioning transportation city.

The question was no longer whether they should leave.

The question was who would remain.

Dorion addressed the expedition.

"We cannot take everyone through the Gate."

Several citizens looked at one another.

Some had already begun repairing homes.

Others had started clearing streets.

A group of craftsmen had converted an ancient storage building into a workshop.

Farmers from the expedition had found fertile ground beyond the city walls.

The discovery changed everything.

Grand Meridian could support a settlement.

Not a temporary camp.

A real settlement.

A bridge between Borealis, Aurion Citadel, Solaris Sanctum, Skyreach Observatory, and the distant regions beyond.

One of the Nordfrost elders spoke.

"We should remain."

Dorion nodded.

"Some of us will."

Bardin smiled.

"I knew you were going to say that."

The decision was made.

A permanent expeditionary settlement would be established.

The first citizens of the restored Grand Meridian.

THE FIRST FARM

The first major project was agriculture.

Grand Meridian had ancient agricultural systems built into its outskirts.

Lirion restored the irrigation network.

Then he discovered something even more valuable.

A farming machine.

It was enormous.

A mechanical agricultural crawler with six articulated arms.

Its body contained soil sensors, seed dispensers, irrigation equipment, and small technomagik harvesters.

Lirion activated it.

The machine moved into a field.

The farmers watched cautiously.

It began preparing the soil.

Bardin laughed.

"So the ancient people had farmers with legs made of steel."

Lirion shook his head.

"Not exactly."

The machine released a series of small devices.

They burrowed into the soil.

Lirion scanned the results.

"Modernized farming would be more efficient."

He began modifying the machine.

The old technomagik system merged with modern components.

Soon, several agricultural machines were operating.

They prepared fields.

Planted seeds.

Measured moisture.

Distributed nutrients.

And harvested crops.

The farmers stared.

One elderly farmer touched the machine.

"We could feed a city with these."

Lirion smiled.

"That is the idea."

THE FIRST AIRSHIP DEPARTURE

The Grand Meridian Airship Port became active soon afterward.

Several modern airships from the expedition were repaired.

The ancient docking rings synchronized with them.

Lirion created new navigation interfaces compatible with modern technomagik systems.

The first group preparing to return to Aurion Citadel gathered on the platform.

Families.

Engineers.

Scouts.

Merchants.

Some had been away from Aurion for months.

They were carrying samples from Borealis.

Ancient technology.

Maps.

Recovered artifacts.

And news of Grand Meridian.

Dorion watched the loading.

"You're staying."

Lirion nodded.

"For now."

Dorion smiled.

"You'll return?"

"Of course."

Sorion stood nearby.

His eyes were fixed on the distant horizon.

"We all will."

The airship engines activated.

The docking rings glowed.

The vessel lifted.

The people of Grand Meridian gathered below.

The airship rose above the city.

Then it turned south.

Toward Aurion Citadel.

For the first time in thousands of years, the ancient airship port had sent a vessel into the sky.

SKYREACH DESCENDS

Vael-Sha and the people of Skyreach remained in Grand Meridian.

Their presence changed the city.

They shared astronomical knowledge.

Weather prediction.

Resonance navigation.

Ancient star maps.

They also revealed something unexpected.

Skyreach had been watching the Meridian network for generations.

They knew where some of the forgotten cities were.

But there was one problem.

One destination had never answered.

An unknown city.

A city that did not appear on the original Twelve-City network.

Vael-Sha called it:

"Elyr-Vahn."

Lirion searched the Meridian archives.

Nothing.

"No record."

Vael-Sha shook his head.

"That is why we came."

Sorion looked toward him.

"You were looking for it?"

"We were looking for its signal."

"Did you find it?"

Vael-Sha looked toward the harbor.

"Not yet."

Then—

a distant horn sounded.

Everyone turned.

Another vessel was approaching.

Not a ship from Borealis.

Not a vessel from Skyreach.

Its design was completely unfamiliar.

A dark vessel with a narrow silver hull.

No flag.

No visible insignia.

Its sails were black.

The ship entered the harbor without requesting permission.

The crew stood silently.

No one recognized them.

Lirion scanned the vessel.

"Unknown origin."

Vael-Sha became serious.

"That is not Elyr-Vahn."

The unknown visitors had arrived.

THE MEMORY OF SOLARIS

While Grand Meridian expanded, the three brothers prepared for their journey.

Dorion.

Lirion.

Sorion.

They would travel through the restored Veil Gate to Solaris Sanctum.

The Burning Sea.

But Sorion had another reason for going.

The name Solaris had appeared in the records of the Veilkeepers.

Ancient enemy.

Ancient rival.

Ancient wound.

The Sanctum of Shadows had preserved memories of them.

Before the Omnission.

Before the great erasure of history.

Before entire civilizations lost their names.

The three brothers entered the Gate chamber.

Sorion stood before the portal.

The Veilkeeper records appeared around him.

Images formed.

Ancient warriors.

Dark robes.

Silver masks.

Solaris priests.

Veilkeepers.

Two civilizations facing each other across a burning desert.

The memory shifted.

The Veilkeepers had not always been guardians.

They had once been involved in a conflict with Solaris.

But the reason had been erased.

Omnission had removed it.

Only fragments remained.

Sorion whispered:

"We were there."

Lirion looked at him.

"How do you know?"

Sorion touched his chest.

"I remember the feeling."

Dorion stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Sorion shook his head.

"I don't know."

The memory fractured.

A burning city.

A sealed gate.

Veilkeepers retreating.

Solaris warriors pursuing them.

Then—

nothing.

Omnission.

The history vanished.

BEFORE OMNISSION

Sorion studied the remaining memory fragments.

He projected them into the Gate chamber.

The three brothers watched.

A voice emerged.

Ancient.

Distorted.

But understandable.

"The Veilkeepers must never allow Solaris to reach the Meridian."

Dorion frowned.

"Why?"

The memory continued.

"Because the Solaris Sanctum does not merely control the Burning Sea."

The image showed a massive structure beneath the desert.

A gigantic machine.

Its core was shaped like a sun.

Lirion stared.

"That is not a power plant."

Sorion looked at it.

"It is a weapon."

The memory ended.

A final sentence appeared.

IF OMNISSION TAKES OUR NAMES, LET THEM REMEMBER OUR FATE.

The brothers stood silently.

Dorion finally spoke.

"So that's what Omnission erased."

"Not just names."

Lirion nodded.

"The reason for the war."

Sorion looked toward the Gate.

"Then Solaris may know what happened."

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

The three brothers stepped forward.

Behind them stood the citizens of Grand Meridian.

Some waved.

Others watched silently.

The Skyreach monks stood near Vael-Sha.

The unknown visitors remained aboard their strange vessel.

Grand Meridian had become a crossroads again.

And now its first major journey was beginning.

Dorion entered first.

Lirion followed.

Sorion stood at the threshold.

He looked back at the city.

The harbor was full of life.

Farmers.

Engineers.

Merchants.

Sailors.

Travelers.

Children.

Machines.

Airships.

Ships.

For thousands of years, Grand Meridian had been silent.

Now it was becoming a city again.

Sorion stepped through the Gate.

The world changed.

Cold disappeared.

Heat struck his face.

The sky became gold.

Sand stretched to the horizon.

The Burning Sea.

Solaris Sanctum waited beyond the desert.

Dorion looked around.

"So this is Solaris."

Lirion scanned the horizon.

"Ancient enemy of the Veilkeepers."

Sorion looked toward the distant towers.

"And the place that remembers what Omnission erased."

They began walking.

GRAND MERIDIAN'S FIRST TRADERS

Back in Grand Meridian, the harbor became busier.

The first merchant ships arrived from nearby coastal settlements.

Then fishing vessels.

Then small trading boats.

News spread rapidly.

The ancient harbor had reopened.

Merchants arrived carrying salt.

Fish.

Grain.

Fruit.

Timber.

Metal.

Spices.

Cloth.

Bardin watched the ships arrive.

"This place is becoming a market."

A local farmer laughed.

"It already is."

Then a larger caravan from the road appeared.

The crawlers carried the banners of Veyrath.

The harbor guards immediately became tense.

Vael-Sha watched them approach.

"Veyrath."

The word carried weight.

The ancient enemy's descendants had discovered Grand Meridian.

But the caravan were not carrying armies.

They carried cargo.

Farm produce.

Tools.

Textiles.

Food.

Trading goods.

A Veyrath merchant stepped onto the dock.

He looked around at the restored harbor.

Then smiled.

"We receive the resoncane of the Grand Meridian was alive again."

The Grand Meridian official approached.

"You came to trade?"

The merchant nodded.

"We have farms."

He gestured toward the cargo.

"Grain. Root crops. Dried fruit. Oil."

Another ship arrived behind him.

Then another.

The harbor began filling with traders.

THE MACHINE MARKET

The arrival of Veyrath created an opportunity.

Lirion had left behind several agricultural machines.

The Grand Meridian engineers demonstrated them.

A technomagik plow moved through a field.

A mechanical harvester gathered grain.

A water-management machine distributed irrigation.

The Veyrath merchants stared.

One of them approached Lirion's representative.

"How much?"

The engineer smiled.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"What do you have?"

The merchant laughed.

"Everything."

Soon negotiations began.

Machines for crops.

Irrigation systems for grain.

Harvesters for livestock.

Energy cells for food.

Tools for raw materials.

Grand Meridian became a trading center almost overnight.

The ancient city had once connected civilizations through transportation.

Now it was reconnecting them through commerce.

THE OUTSKIRTS ARRIVE

The next wave came from the surrounding settlements.

Small towns.

Mountain villages.

Fishing communities.

Farming regions.

Travelers arrived with carts and boats.

They brought their own goods.

Wood.

Leather.

Herbs.

Minerals.

Fish.

Wild games.

Fruit.

Baked food.

Handmade tools.

Clothing.

Weapons.

And ancient relics discovered in nearby ruins.

Grand Meridian welcomed them.

The harbor became crowded.

Voices filled the streets.

Children ran between market stalls.

Farmers negotiated with merchants.

Engineers repaired machines.

Sailors shouted from the docks.

For the first time in thousands of years—

Grand Meridian sounded alive.

THE HARBOR LEAVES AGAIN

Then something happened that nobody expected.

One of the ancient harbor systems activated.

A warning appeared across the central control tower.

MERIDIAN MARITIME ROUTE — READY.

The ancient navigation system had completed its calculations.

The harbor wasn't only designed to receive ships.

It was designed to send them.

Lirion's modifications had restored the navigation network.

The Grand Meridian fleet could travel again.

Bardin stared at the map.

"Where does that route go?"

The system displayed hundreds of destinations.

Coastal settlements.

Island territories.

Lost cities.

Trading ports.

Ancient routes.

And distant seas.

"The harbor is open."

Vael-Sha looked at the map.

He looked toward the horizon.

"The world is open."

A NEW AGE OF TRAVEL

That evening, the first modernized Grand Meridian trading vessel prepared to depart.

Its hull was ancient.

Its engines were modern.

Its navigation system combined both technologies.

Farmers loaded produce.

Merchants loaded tools.

Technicians loaded technomagik machines.

Sailors secured the cargo.

The ship slowly left the harbor.

Its sails opened.

Its engines activated.

It moved toward the open sea.

People gathered along the docks.

They watched.

Another ship followed.

Then another.

Grand Meridian had become a maritime crossroads once again.

Airships departed toward Aurion Citadel.

Ships traveled toward coastal settlements.

Traders arrived from Veyrath.

Farmers arrived from the outskirts.

Skyreach watched from above.

And somewhere far away—

the three brothers walked beneath the golden sky of Solaris Sanctum.

They had entered the ancient enemy's territory.

They had come looking for the truth.

The truth of the Veilkeepers.

The truth of Solaris.

The truth of Omnission.

And perhaps—

the truth of their own fate.

THE UNKNOWN SHIP

As night settled over Grand Meridian, the unidentified vessel remained in the harbor.

Its crew had said almost nothing.

They had refused to identify their city.

They had refused to explain how they had found Grand Meridian.

Vael-Sha stood on the dock staring at their black sails.

Lirion's translator detected a faint resonance coming from the ship.

Not Skyreach.

Not Veyrath.

Not Borealis.

Not Solaris.

Something else.

A completely unknown frequency.

The vessel's captain finally stepped onto the dock.

He looked toward Vael-Sha.

Then toward the ancient Meridian monument.

Then he spoke one sentence.

The translator struggled.

The words appeared slowly.

"We have been searching for Grand Meridian for three hundred years."

Vael-Sha's expression hardened.

"Why?"

The captain looked toward the restored harbor.

"Because when Grand Meridian awaken..."

He paused.

"...and we remember it was the only way."

The harbor lights flickered.

Lirion's translator suddenly produced an error.

UNKNOWN CIVILIZATION.

UNKNOWN ORIGIN.

UNKNOWN HISTORICAL RECORD.

The captain looked toward the horizon.

"And now that it has awakened again..."

He smiled.

"...we can finally found our home."

"Our beloved Nihyra!"

Far away, beneath the burning skies of Solaris, the three brothers continued toward the Sanctum of Shadows.

Behind them, Grand Meridian became a living crossroads.

The harbor traded again.

The airships flew again.

The ancient roads opened again.

Civilizations that had forgotten one another began meeting again.

And with every ship that entered the harbor...

with every airship that crossed the sky...

with every forgotten road that awakened...

the ancient world came closer to remembering itself.

But Omnission had not erased everything.

Some memories had survived.

Some enemies had survived.

Some cities had survived.

And somewhere beyond the known Meridian network...

an unknown civilization had been waiting for the harbor to awaken.

The age of isolation was ending.

The age of the Grand Meridian had begun.
