Chapter 73 - Episode 73 : Road Beyond the Burning Sea

The underground chamber beneath Solaris had become a maze of ancient mechanisms.

The expedition had expected monsters.

Instead, they had found a trial.

A civilization had protected its deepest secrets behind three tests:

Battle.

Mind.

Movement.

And at the center of everything was from the enormous Map Core recovered from the giant desert beast.

The brothers stood before the first sealed chamber.

Valek looked at the massive doors.

"So this is what the monsters were running from."

Lirion placed a hand against the ancient metal.

He listened.

Not with his ears.

With his connection to machines.

Ancient machine-language symbols traveled across the surface.

Lirion's expression became focused.

"No."

Dorion looked at him.

"No?"

Lirion translated the machine's message.

"They weren't running from what is inside."

He looked deeper into the chamber.

"They were being drawn by it."

The enormous doors unlocked.

KRRRRRRRMMMM...

Dorion raised his weapon.

"Then let's see what make them attracted to the city."

The doors opened.

THE FIRST TRIAL

Hundreds of ancient constructs awakened.

They were not ordinary machines.

Each carried a different combat pattern.

Some wielded enormous blades.

Others carried shields.

Several possessed Solar resonance weapons.

Others fired ancient technomagik projectiles.

The chamber became a battlefield.

Dorion charged first.

His weapon collided with a massive construct.

BOOM!

The impact pushed both combatants backward.

Dorion grinned.

"Stronger than the machines outside."

The construct attacked again.

Dorion blocked.

The floor cracked beneath his feet.

He pushed back.

His muscles strained.

Then the machine released a concentrated resonance strike.

Dorion crossed his weapon before him.

KRAAAASH!

He was driven backward.

But he remained standing.

Lirion studied the readings.

"Dorion!"

Dorion looked over.

"Your equipment is restricting your output."

Dorion frowned.

"My armor?"

"Not the armor itself. The resonance limiters."

Lirion understood the ancient mechanism built into Dorion's equipment.

His natural strength had increased throughout their journey, but the armor had been preventing him from safely using its full potential.

Lirion connected to the reinforcement system.

K-THUNK.

Several dormant channels opened.

Dorion's armor responded.

Energy surged through his arms.

His weapon became heavier.

His stance changed.

Dorion looked at his hands.

Then smiled.

"So that's what I've been missing."

The construct attacked again.

Dorion met it head-on.

BOOOOOOM!

The ancient machine's weapon shattered.

Dorion followed with a second strike.

CRACK!

Its torso split.

He grabbed the massive construct with both hands.

Then threw it across the chamber.

KRAAAASH!

The remaining machines stopped.

Dorion stood among the wreckage.

His strength had not simply increased.

It had become controlled.

Lirion checked the readings.

"Your resonance output has increased by thirty-eight percent."

Dorion raised his weapon.

"Let's make it forty."

He charged.

All the machines was defeated.

They stepped on to the next trial.

THE SECOND TRIAL

The battlefield disappeared.

The floor separated.

The brothers found themselves before twelve enormous rotating rings.

Each ring contained ancient symbols.

Stars.

Suns.

Shadows.

Machines.

Weapons.

And strange symbols none of them recognized.

At the center was an inscription.

Lirion approached it.

The symbols moved.

He understood them.

"This is machine language."

Dorion looked at him.

"What does it say?"

Lirion translated:

"LIGHT REVEALS THE ROAD."

The next symbols illuminated.

"SHADOW REVEALS WHAT ROAD CONCEALS."

Sorion looked toward Valek.

Valek understood immediately.

"So this isn't Lirion and Sorion."

Lirion nodded.

"No."

He pointed toward the two resonance symbols.

"This trial requires Solar and Veil resonance."

Valek stepped forward.

His Solar Blade ignited.

Golden light filled the chamber.

Sorion drew his Veil Dual Daggers.

Silver-violet darkness gathered around him.

Lirion continued studying the machine.

"The puzzle isn't asking one of you to overpower it."

He looked at the twelve rings.

"It's asking you to reveal the correct sequence."

Valek smiled.

"Then let's begin."

LIGHT REVEALS

Valek moved first.

His Solar Blade swept across the chamber.

A brilliant golden arc passed over the first ring.

Symbols appeared.

Sorion studied them.

"Three."

Valek moved again.

Another arc.

More symbols appeared.

"Five."

Sorion stepped forward.

His shadow spread across the floor.

Where Valek's light had revealed the obvious symbols, Sorion's Veil revealed those hidden behind them.

"Two."

The mechanism rotated.

KRRRRRR...

Valek adjusted his position.

Sorion followed.

Light.

Shadow.

Light.

Shadow.

Each revealed another part of the sequence.

Lirion watched the machine language changing.

"They're correct."

Dorion looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"The machine is confirming every sequence."

The twelve rings rotated faster.

Valek's Solar Blade illuminated another set of symbols.

Sorion's Veil entered between them.

The hidden symbols appeared.

Neither could complete the puzzle alone.

Valek revealed what existed in front of them.

Sorion revealed what had been deliberately concealed.

Together—

the rings aligned.

CLACK.

CLACK.

CLACK.

The final ring locked.

A hidden passage opened.

Dorion laughed.

"So the ancient civilization needed both of them."

Sorion looked toward Valek.

"Light and shadow."

Valek nodded.

"Neither is complete alone."

Lirion smiled.

"That appears to be the lesson."

THE THIRD TRIAL

The next chamber opened.

There was no enemy.

No weapon.

No puzzle.

Only an enormous empty space.

Then—

the walls began moving.

Platforms appeared.

Disappeared.

Rotated.

Some collapsed immediately.

Others moved at impossible speeds.

A voice echoed through the chamber.

"POWER WITHOUT CONTROL IS FAILURE."

Sorion looked ahead.

"This one is mine."

Dorion smiled.

"Finally."

The trial began.

The first platform moved.

Sorion jumped.

It vanished beneath him.

He twisted in midair.

A Veil shadow appeared against the wall.

He anchored himself to it.

Then launched toward another platform.

Three energy barriers crossed the chamber.

Sorion slipped between them.

A fourth appeared.

He ducked.

A fifth.

He twisted.

A sixth—

he disappeared.

WHOOSH!

He reappeared behind it.

The chamber accelerated.

The platforms became smaller.

The gaps became wider.

Sorion's movements became almost impossible to follow.

Valek watched carefully.

Sorion vanished again.

Valek smiled.

"I've never seen anyone move like that."

Dorion answered:

"That's Sorion."

THE FINAL MOVEMENT

The final obstacle appeared.

A massive Solar barrier.

Behind it—

an enormous field of darkness.

The two energies began moving toward each other.

Sorion couldn't simply outrun them.

He studied their movement.

Then he understood.

The trial was not asking him to defeat the light.

It was asking him to use the relationship between light and shadow.

Sorion released a narrow Veil field.

The Solar barrier struck it.

Instead of destroying the shadow—

the two energies created a narrow corridor between them.

Sorion moved.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Then—

WHOOSH!

He passed through the corridor just before the two fields collided.

The entire chamber went silent.

Then the ancient system spoke.

"AGILITY ACCEPTED."

Sorion landed.

His daggers remained lowered.

Valek nodded.

"Perfect timing."

Sorion answered:

"Timing is everything."

THE FOURTH CHALLENGE — LIGHT AND SHADOW

The chamber suddenly transformed.

Two enormous constructs appeared.

One was made entirely of Solar resonance.

The other was composed of Veil energy.

Valek looked at the first.

Sorion looked at the second.

Lirion immediately recognized the machine's instruction.

"This isn't a battle against one enemy."

Dorion looked at him.

"Then what is it?"

"A synchronization test."

Valek raised his Solar Blade.

Sorion raised his Veil Dual Daggers.

The two constructs attacked.

Valek met the Solar construct.

CLANG!

Golden energy exploded across the chamber.

Sorion met the shadow construct.

KRAK!

Veil energy tore across the floor.

The ancient system was measuring them.

Not strength.

Not speed.

Synchronization.

Valek attacked.

Sorion moved at the same instant.

Light pushed the Solar construct toward Sorion.

Shadow redirected it toward Valek.

Valek's Solar Blade struck.

Sorion's Veil caught the reflected energy.

The two energies crossed.

GOLDEN LIGHT.

SILVER-VIOLET SHADOW.

They spiraled around one another.

The constructs were trapped between them.

Valek shouted:

"Now!"

Sorion released his Veil.

Valek released his Solar resonance.

The two forces collided—

but instead of destroying one another, they formed a controlled corridor of combined resonance.

The constructs froze.

Then shattered.

KRAAAAAAAAAAASH!

The chamber filled with light and shadow.

The ancient machine spoke:

"LIGHT WITHOUT SHADOW IS INCOMPLETE."

"SHADOW WITHOUT LIGHT IS LOST."

Then:

"COMBINATION ACCEPTED."

The chamber opened.

THE MACHINE LORD'S TRIAL

Beyond the chamber was another ancient machine.

It was enormous.

Its central core was damaged.

Hundreds of mechanical components surrounded it.

Lirion approached.

The machine immediately recognized him.

"MACHINE LORD PROTOCOL DETECTED."

Lirion stopped.

Dorion looked at him.

"It knows you."

Lirion nodded.

"It knows the title."

The machine displayed a sequence of failures.

Lirion studied them.

"Damaged power regulator."

He moved to another section.

"Broken communication relay."

Another.

"Corrupted navigation memory."

He continued.

"This machine isn't asking us to fight."

He smiled.

"It's asking me to repair it."

Lirion began working.

He understood the ancient machine's language.

It told him what components had failed.

It told him what systems were damaged.

It even explained how its original designers had constructed the network.

Lirion repaired the regulator.

Reconnected the communication system.

Rebuilt the navigation interface.

Then he placed his hand against the central core.

The machine awakened.

WHOOOOOOM.

Ancient maps appeared throughout the chamber.

Lirion looked at the others.

"Now we can access the Map Core."

THE MAP CORE

At the center of the final vault stood a circular pedestal.

Lirion placed the enormous Map Core recovered from the desert beast onto it.

The ancient system activated.

THUM.

The entire facility awakened.

Ancient maps appeared around them.

The Burning Sea.

Borealis.

Aurion.

Solaris.

The Lost Cities.

Then dozens of unknown regions.

Lirion communicated with the machine.

"Search for Bronze Plate resonance."

The machine responded.

SEARCHING.

The map changed.

One point appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

The brothers stared.

The Bronze Plate had not been destroyed.

Its pieces had been scattered across the ancient world.

THE COMPASS AWAKENS

Sorion approached.

He placed his bronze compass against the Map Core.

The two artifacts resonated.

THUM.

The compass opened.

Its bronze casing unfolded.

New rings emerged.

Ancient symbols appeared around its edge.

The needle spun.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then—

STOP.

A second needle appeared.

Then a third.

Several tiny resonance markers formed around the compass.

Lirion examined the transformation.

"The Map Core expanded its memory."

Dorion looked at the compass.

"What does that mean?"

Lirion answered:

"It can now identify the resonance signatures of the other Bronze Plate pieces."

Sorion stared at the compass.

The map projected into the air.

Several regions appeared.

Borealis.

Ancient fortresses.

Forgotten cities.

Remote territories.

Then one marker became brighter.

The map expanded.

Forests.

Blackwater.

Ruined roads.

Dense vegetation.

Ancient towers disappearing beneath the swamp.

Lirion translated the ancient designation.

"Mirehaven."

Sorion's compass locked onto the location.

MIREHAVEN.

THE BRONZE PLATE SCATTERED ACROSS THE WORLD

The Map Core revealed the truth.

The Bronze Plate Armor Set had been scattered across different regions.

Not destroyed.

Not erased.

Separated.

Some pieces had been hidden deliberately.

Some had been lost through the collapse of civilizations.

Some had been carried away by warriors.

Others remained inside forgotten cities.

The compass now possessed enough information to find their resonance.

Dorion looked across the projected map.

"So we have our next destination."

Lirion studied the coordinates.

"Shrouden Swamps Region."

Valek looked toward the map.

"Mirehaven."

Sorion's compass continued pointing toward it.

For the first time since they entered Solaris—

the compass wasn't searching.

It knew exactly where to go.

THE LAST AWAKENING

The underground facility began shaking.

Lirion looked toward the ancient machine.

"The system is shutting down."

Dorion grabbed the recovered equipment.

"Then we're leaving."

The group ran.

Behind them, ancient mechanisms began closing.

Valek used his Solar Blade to destroy falling debris.

Sorion moved through collapsing passages using his Veil.

Dorion forced open a sealed emergency door.

BOOOOOOM!

Lirion communicated with the facility.

"Emergency exit."

The ancient machine responded.

"COMMAND ACCEPTED, MACHINE LORD."

A hidden passage opened.

They escaped.

Behind them—

KRRRRRMMMM...

The ancient doors sealed.

The facility disappeared beneath the sand.

THE RETURN TO SOLARIS

The expedition emerged from beneath the Burning Sea at dawn.

Solaris stood in the distance.

The city had survived the monster attacks.

The hunting grounds were being cleared.

Monster cores were being collected.

Ancient machine parts were being catalogued.

Farmers were already examining usable technomagik components.

The people of Solaris continued rebuilding.

But the brothers had another road to follow.

Their new compass had given them a destination.

Mirehaven.

Valek approached Sorion.

"You're leaving."

Sorion nodded.

"The compass found another Bronze Plate resonance."

Valek looked at the projected map.

"Mirehaven."

Dorion climbed onto the desert skiff.

"Then that's where we're going."

Lirion checked the vehicle.

"The skiff is ready."

Valek smiled.

"Then I suppose this isn't goodbye."

Dorion extended his hand.

"Not even close."

Valek shook it.

THE FINAL DEPARTURE

The three brothers boarded the ancient desert skiff.

Dorion stood at the front.

Lirion took control of the vehicle.

Sorion held the upgraded compass.

Valek remained behind with the Solaris warriors.

The skiff lifted from the golden sand.

WHOOOOOSH.

It began moving across the Burning Sea.

Solaris grew smaller behind them.

The Star-in-Sun emblem remained visible above the city.

Valek watched them disappear.

Then he looked toward the ancient arena.

The Grand Cape still rested within the city.

Its forgotten flying resonance remained dormant.

Perhaps one day someone would discover how to awaken it.

Perhaps it was meant for a warrior yet to come.

THE ROAD TO MIREHAVEN

The desert stretched endlessly beneath the ancient skiff.

But the brothers did not immediately turn west.

Sorion's upgraded compass projected the newly discovered map above the vehicle.

The destination remained illuminated.

MIREHAVEN.

Beneath the name, another designation appeared:

SHROUDEN SWAMPS REGION.

Blackwater channels.

Dense forests.

Ancient ruins.

Mist-covered settlements.

And somewhere beneath that forgotten land—

another resonance from the Bronze Plate Relics

Dorion studied the projection.

"So that's where we're going."

Lirion shook his head.

"Eventually."

Dorion looked at him.

"Eventually?"

Lirion pointed toward the navigation system.

"The skiff can reach the region, but we don't know the safest route."

Sorion looked toward the horizon.

"We need information first."

A familiar city appeared on the distant navigation map.

GRAND MERIDIAN.

Dorion smiled.

"Then we're going back to the harbor."

RETURN TO GRAND MERIDIAN

By late afternoon, the golden desert began giving way to the coastline.

The heat softened.

The smell of salt reached them.

Then the enormous harbor appeared.

GRAND MERIDIAN.

The once-abandoned dock had changed completely.

The harbor was alive.

Ships moved between the piers.

Technomagik cranes loaded cargo.

Farmers from the surrounding outskirts brought produce.

Travelers from distant coastal settlements unloaded supplies.

Veyrath merchants negotiated with local traders.

Ancient machines repaired by Lirion's influence now worked beside newly constructed technomagik equipment.

And above the harbor—

the restored Airship Port was active.

Several airships were preparing for departure.

Dorion looked at the city.

"We were gone only a short time."

Lirion smiled.

"And already it has changed."

Sorion looked toward the harbor.

"That's what happens when a road opens."

The skiff descended.

Its stabilizers lowered.

It touched the harbor platform.

K-THUMP.

A group of dock workers immediately approached.

One recognized them.

"You're the Solaris travelers!"

Dorion laughed.

"Apparently we're becoming famous."

Lirion stepped from the skiff.

"We need information."

The dock worker pointed toward the settlement.

"Then you should speak with Bardin."

BARDIN'S MAP

They found Bardin near the restored harbor records office.

He was studying an old collection of maps.

When he saw the brothers, he immediately stood.

"You came back."

Dorion nodded.

"We need your help."

Bardin looked at Sorion's compass.

His expression changed.

"That wasn't like that before."

Lirion answered:

"It was upgraded."

Bardin approached.

The projected map appeared.

The name MIREHAVEN illuminated above the Shrouden Swamps.

Bardin stared at it.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then—

"Mirehaven."

Sorion noticed his reaction.

"You know it?"

Bardin slowly nodded.

"I know the name."

He reached for an old wooden case.

Inside were several ancient maps.

Some were damaged.

Others were almost unreadable.

He spread them across the table.

"My family carried these for generations."

Dorion looked at the maps.

"Your family?"

Bardin nodded.

"My ancestors came from the southern regions."

He pointed toward the swamps.

"Before the roads were lost."

THE LAND OF HIS ANCESTORS

Bardin's voice became quieter.

"My grandfather used to speak about a place surrounded by water and fog."

"A city hidden inside a massive wetland."

"A place where the roads disappeared beneath blackwater."

Lirion examined the map.

"Mirehaven."

Bardin nodded.

"Yes."

He pointed toward an ancient symbol.

"This is the oldest version of the name."

The symbol was different from the modern designation.

Lirion translated the ancient machine notation.

"Mirehaven."

Sorion looked at Bardin.

"What happened to it?"

Bardin shook his head.

"My ancestors never knew."

"They only knew that the roads leading there disappeared."

Dorion looked at the map.

"Why didn't anyone go looking?"

Bardin gave a quiet laugh.

"Because the Shrouden Swamps are not a place ordinary travelers visit."

He pointed toward several markings.

"Flood channels."

"Quicksand."

"Predatory creatures."

"Ancient ruins."

"And something else."

Sorion looked at him.

"What?"

Bardin hesitated.

"My ancestors said the swamp itself seemed to change."

THE FORGOTTEN ROAD

Bardin brought out another map.

This one was much older.

Its edges were almost destroyed.

A faint road was visible.

It traveled from Grand Meridian toward the western interior.

Then disappeared.

Bardin placed another fragment beside it.

The road continued.

Then disappeared again.

He placed a third.

The route eventually reached the Shrouden Swamps.

"There."

Sorion's compass reacted.

THUM.

Everyone stopped.

The needle moved.

It pointed toward the old map.

Bardin stared.

"That compass recognized the road."

Lirion nodded.

"The Map Core gave it ancient navigation memory."

Bardin looked at the brothers.

"Then you may be able to follow a road my ancestors could no longer find."

Sorion looked toward Mirehaven's symbol.

"We need to know where it begins."

Bardin pointed toward the western coast.

"Here."

Then he pointed farther inland.

"And here."

Then toward the swamp.

"And finally here."

He drew a line between the three locations.

"The ancient road was not a single road."

Dorion frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"It was a chain of routes."

"Harbor."

"River."

"Swamp."

Bardin smiled.

"Your journey will begin with the sea."

THE ANCESTOR'S WARNING

Bardin opened the wooden case again.

Inside was a small bronze tablet.

It carried the same symbol found on the ancient map.

He handed it to Sorion.

"My grandfather said this belonged to our ancestors."

Sorion examined it.

His compass reacted immediately.

A faint resonance passed through the tablet.

Lirion scanned it.

"This isn't just a map marker."

"What is it?" Dorion asked.

Lirion studied the machine-language patterns.

"A route key."

Bardin's eyes widened.

"A key?"

"It was designed to identify safe passages through the ancient network."

Sorion looked at Bardin.

"Your ancestors weren't merely travelers."

Bardin shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the old maps.

"They were guides."

THE HARBOR OF GRAND MERIDIAN

That evening, the brothers walked through the harbor.

Grand Meridian had become more than a temporary settlement.

It was becoming a crossroads.

Veyrath merchants traded agricultural produce with travelers from the outskirts.

Solaris traders exchanged technomagik components.

Farmers purchased modern cultivation machines.

Coastal sailors brought fish, salt, minerals, and rare materials.

Airships carried passengers toward Aurion Citadel.

Ancient sailboats arrived from distant regions.

The harbor had become the first true meeting point between civilizations that had spent centuries separated.

Dorion watched the activity.

"This place wasn't supposed to exist."

Lirion looked across the docks.

"Neither was the road network."

Sorion looked toward the western sea.

"Perhaps they were waiting for each other."

THE NEW PLAN

The brothers returned to Bardin.

The old map was spread across the table.

Bardin pointed toward the western route.

"If you want to reach Mirehaven, don't go directly through the desert."

"Take the old coastal route."

"Then follow the river."

"From there, enter the Shrouden Swamps."

Dorion nodded.

"How long?"

Bardin smiled.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"Whether the swamp still remembers the old road."

Sorion placed his compass over the map.

The needle aligned with Bardin's ancestral route.

THUM.

A thin golden line appeared.

It traveled from Grand Meridian.

Along the coast.

Toward the river.

Then deep into the Shrouden Swamps.

Finally—

it stopped at a single point.

MIREHAVEN.

Nobody spoke.

Bardin stared at the projection.

"My ancestors spent generations trying to find that road."

Sorion closed the compass.

"Then perhaps it's time their descendants saw it again."

Bardin smiled.

"Perhaps."

HARBOR NIGHT LIGHTS

Night settled over Grand Meridian.

The harbor lights reflected across the dark sea.

Airships waited above the restored port.

Ancient sailboats rested beside modern technomagik vessels.

Merchants continued trading beneath the restored docks.

For centuries, these civilizations had been separated by distance, war, and the Omnission.

Now—

Grand Meridian had become a place where they could meet again.

The three brothers stood at the edge of the harbor.

Bardin stood beside them.

The upgraded compass projected the route.

GRAND MERIDIAN.

WESTERN COASTAL ROAD.

SHROUDEN RIVER.

SHROUDEN SWAMPS.

MIREHAVEN.

Bardin looked at the final destination.

"My ancestors called it the city that disappeared without leaving."

Dorion looked toward the darkness beyond the sea.

"Then we'll find out why."

Lirion studied the route.

"The ancient navigation system confirms the road exists."

Sorion watched the compass.

The needle remained steady.

Bardin looked toward the western horizon.

"Then perhaps the lost road is finally ready to be traveled again."

A ship's bell rang across Grand Meridian.

CLANG.

The harbor answered.

The expedition had begun in the frozen lands of Borealis.

They had crossed ancient roads.

Awakened lost cities.

Survived Solaris.

Entered the Burning Sea.

And recovered the knowledge needed to find the scattered Bronze Plate.

Now the road pointed toward a land Bardin's ancestors once called home.

Mirehaven.

But before the brothers could reach it—

they would have to cross the forgotten waterways of the Shrouden Swamps.

Sorion's compass glowed one final time.

MIREHAVEN.

The brothers turned toward the harbor.

Their next journey would not begin beneath the desert.

It would begin on the sea.

And somewhere beyond the western horizon—

the lost city of Mirehaven was waiting.
