Chapter 78 - Episode 78 : River of Memories - Thalune

The night sea was quiet.

The skiff sailed beneath a sky crowded with stars.

Behind them, the mist of the first trial had disappeared beyond the horizon.

Ahead lay the southern waters.

The route toward Mirehaven remained fixed on Sorion's compass.

But the strange symbol that had appeared after the Trial of the Mist continued glowing.

SECOND TRIAL — RIVER OF MEMORY

Bardin studied it for a long time.

Dorion leaned over his shoulder.

"You said your ancestors knew the old roads."

"They knew some."

"Not this one?"

Bardin shook his head.

"No."

He folded his map.

"This is must be another old route."

Valek looked toward the dark ocean.

"Older than the maps?"

"Older than the people who made them."

Sorion watched the stars.

"Then perhaps the road isn't meant to be found on a map."

THE NIGHT MUSIC

Bardin began playing.

This time, the music was different.

The melody was slow.

Almost mournful.

It sounded like a song meant for sailors who had left home without knowing whether they would return.

The waves moved gently beneath the skiff.

Dorion listened silently.

Valek closed his eyes.

Even Sorion allowed himself to relax.

The music carried memories of distant places.

A harbor at sunset.

A village beside a river.

A mother waiting for a ship.

Children running toward returning sailors.

Old warriors sitting beside fires.

Bardin's voice eventually joined the lute.

"The sea remembers the footsteps of every traveler who crossed it. The river remembers the namesof those who never returned..."

The melody faded.

Then—

the ocean stopped moving.

THE ABYSSAL RESONATORThe Second Trial

The skiff stopped.

Not because the engines had failed.

Not because the wind had disappeared.

Something beneath the sea had called to it.

The water around the vessel became strangely still.

The sails hung motionless.

The waves flattened.

Even the small ripples against the hull faded until the skiff appeared to be floating upon glass.

Lirion stared at the instruments.

"That's impossible."

Dorion looked over.

"What is it?"

"The current hasn't stopped."

Lirion pointed toward the readings.

"It's flowing beneath us."

"Then why isn't the skiff moving?"

Lirion slowly shook his head.

"I don't know."

Sorion stepped toward the edge.

The bronze compass at his side trembled.

Once.

Then again.

He looked down.

The ocean beneath the skiff was becoming transparent.

Not clear like ordinary water.

Transparent like glass.

Far below...

something enormous glowed in the darkness.

Bardin leaned over the side.

"I don't suppose that's a friendly fish."

Valek studied the shape.

"No."

The object below was too large.

Too precise.

Too ancient.

A circular structure rested upon the ocean floor, surrounded by enormous crystal formations.

But it had no doorway.

No portal.

No Veil.

Instead, six enormous bronze arms extended from a central chamber.

They disappeared into the seabed.

Lirion's expression changed.

"That's not a Gate."

Sorion nodded.

"No."

He could feel it.

The structure wasn't calling them somewhere.

It was listening.

THE DESCENT

Bardin looked at his Frog Exo-Suit.

Everyone looked at him.

He sighed.

"I knew this armor would eventually become my entire personality."

Dorion smiled.

"You're the only one who can breathe underwater."

"I am aware."

Bardin sealed his helmet.

The mechanical components of the Frog Exo-Suit unfolded around his arms and legs.

Small Technomagik lamps illuminated his armor.

Before jumping, he looked at the others.

"If I meet an enormous sea monster..."

He paused.

"...I'm blaming all of you."

Then he jumped.

SPLASH.

THE WORLD BELOW

Bardin descended.

Ten meters.

Twenty.

Fifty.

The sunlight gradually disappeared.

The ocean became dark blue.

Then almost completely black.

His suit illuminated the water around him.

And the darkness came alive.

Huge translucent creatures drifted through the deep.

Some resembled manta rays.

Others resembled enormous jellyfish.

But they were not ordinary creatures.

Technomagik crystals had grown naturally within their bodies.

Some carried glowing veins beneath their translucent skin.

Others had small bronze structures fused naturally into their shells.

One enormous creature passed beside Bardin.

Its body was larger than the expedition's largest crawler.

Bardin stopped moving.

The creature looked at him.

Bardin raised one hand.

"Hello."

The creature continued swimming.

Bardin released a breath.

"Good."

He continued downward.

THE SUNKEN STRUCTURE

The ocean floor finally appeared.

Bardin landed gently upon ancient stone.

Before him stood the enormous machine.

Coral covered its outer frame.

Sea plants grew through the bronze.

Crystal formations had emerged from cracks in the ancient structure.

The machine was no longer separate from the ocean.

It had become part of it.

Bardin approached.

His suit began detecting a vibration.

THUM.

He stopped.

Another pulse.

THUM.

The surrounding crystals illuminated.

The plants responded.

Then the creatures in the distance began changing direction.

They were gathering.

Bardin slowly placed his hand against the bronze.

A tone passed through his suit.

A low, beautiful sound.

Not a warning.

Not an alarm.

A note.

Bardin looked at the structure.

"You're listening."

THE ABYSSAL RESONATOR

Lirion received the signal aboard the skiff.

His eyes widened.

"He's activating something."

Dorion looked toward the instruments.

"Can you identify it?"

"Not completely."

Lirion adjusted the receiver.

"The machine isn't transmitting energy outward."

"What is it doing?"

"Listening."

Sorion looked at the sea.

"To what?"

Lirion watched the readings.

"The ocean."

He paused.

"The creatures."

Another pause.

"The crystals."

His voice became quieter.

"And the memories stored inside them."

A MEMORY WITHOUT A VEIL

Bardin suddenly saw the ocean change.

The machine's light spread through the water.

The creatures disappeared.

The ruins disappeared.

The darkness disappeared.

Bardin found himself standing upon an ancient harbor.

It was not a Veil Gate.

There was no portal.

No passage.

No transportation.

It was simply a memory preserved by resonance.

A magnificent city stood beside the sea.

Bronze towers rose above enormous docks.

Ships filled the harbor.

Technomagik vessels moved beneath the water.

Airships floated overhead.

People walked through the streets.

Merchants shouted.

Children ran between stalls.

Sailors carried supplies.

Scholars studied crystal samples.

The city was alive.

Then Bardin noticed the name carved above the harbor.

MERIDIAN.

Not Grand Meridian.

Not the Floating Meridian.

An older Meridian.

A city whose name had almost disappeared from history.

Bardin whispered:

"Another Meridian..."

THE STRANGER FROM VEYRATH

The memory shifted.

A Veil Gate appeared inside the ancient harbor.

Bardin immediately understood.

This was not another Gate.

The Resonator was showing a recorded memory of a Gate that once existed here.

Several Veyrath warriors emerged.

Their armor was damaged.

They looked exhausted.

Their leader approached the city's guardians.

"Tell us where Mirehaven is."

The guardians refused.

The Veyrath commander looked toward the harbor.

"We need the location."

"You seek it for conquest."

"No."

His voice became desperate.

"We seek it because we have lost everything."

The guardian shook his head.

"Mirehaven does not belong to conquerors."

The Veyrath commander raised his weapon.

"Then you leave us no choice."

The first strike came.

The harbor erupted into chaos.

THE FALL OF MERIDIAN

Bardin watched helplessly.

People fled through the streets.

Ships attempted to escape.

Technomagik weapons fired across the harbor.

Defenders fought back.

The battle was not glorious.

It was frightening.

Buildings collapsed.

Machines exploded.

The sea caught fire.

The Resonator showed everything.

Not because it wanted to glorify the battle.

Because it remembered.

Then something unexpected happened.

The city's people began destroying their own records.

Maps were burned.

Navigation crystals were shattered.

Archive chambers were sealed.

The coordinates of Mirehaven were deliberately erased.

One scholar stood before the final archive.

A Veyrath warrior demanded:

"Where is it?"

The scholar looked at him.

"You cannot conquer what you cannot find."

The archive collapsed.

THE CITY SINKS

The memory accelerated.

The war ended.

Meridian had survived.

But barely.

Its lower districts had been destroyed.

Its harbor was broken.

Its foundations had become unstable.

Then the sea came.

Floodwaters entered the streets.

Buildings collapsed into the harbor.

The ancient Resonator remained beneath the city.

Its creators had designed it to survive.

It continued recording.

Continued listening.

Continued remembering.

The final image showed the last survivors leaving.

One woman placed her hand upon the Resonator.

"Remember us."

The machine responded with a single tone.

THOOM.

The memory ended.

SORION'S MEMORY RESONANCE

Back aboard the skiff, Sorion suddenly opened his eyes.

He had felt it.

The memory had traveled through the Resonator.

But unlike the Veil...

it had not entered his mind by force.

It had resonated with him.

Silver-violet energy appeared around his hand.

Lirion immediately noticed.

"Sorion."

"I know."

Sorion looked toward the ocean.

"The Resonator isn't showing us a destination."

Dorion understood.

"It's showing us history."

Sorion nodded.

"And something is still missing."

THE LOST MEMORY

Below the sea, Bardin remained beside the Resonator.

The machine pulsed again.

This time, a second memory appeared.

A map.

Not a normal map.

A living map made from currents, stars, memories, and resonance.

It showed the southern seas.

The routes changed continuously.

Some paths disappeared.

Others appeared.

One destination remained hidden beneath layers of mist.

Bardin recognized it.

"Mirehaven."

The name appeared for only a moment.

Then vanished.

A message formed within the Resonator.

THE ROAD CANNOT BE RECORDED.

Another followed.

THE ROAD MUST BE REMEMBERED.

Bardin smiled.

"So that's the trick."

SORION CONNECTS WITH THE RESONATOR

Sorion closed his eyes.

He reached toward the ocean with his Memory Resonance.

Silver-violet energy traveled across the surface.

It did not open a Gate.

It did not create a portal.

Instead...

the ocean began to glow.

The Resonator answered from below.

THOOM.

Bardin felt the vibration through his armor.

He placed his hand against the central chamber.

Sorion's resonance traveled through the water.

For a brief moment, the two were connected.

Sorion saw what Bardin had seen.

Meridian.

The war.

The destruction.

The forgotten people.

The deliberate loss of Mirehaven's location.

And then...

something else.

A Bronze object.

Hidden inside an ancient chamber.

Its surface carried twelve roads.

Sorion's eyes opened.

The vision vanished.

He whispered:

"The Bronze Plate.."

Lirion looked at him.

"What did you see?"

Sorion didn't answer immediately.

He looked toward the southern horizon.

"Something important."

THE RESONATOR'S GIFT

The Abyssal Resonator released one final pulse.

The surrounding creatures responded.

The great crystal-backed creature from earlier passed above Bardin.

Its call traveled through the water.

The Resonator translated the sound into a Technomagik pattern.

Lirion's instruments received it.

A route appeared.

Not a portal.

Not a shortcut.

A safe maritime passage.

It would lead the expedition toward the southern waters.

Toward the Shrouden Swamps.

Toward Mirehaven.

Lirion stared at the route.

"The Resonator has given us a way forward."

Dorion asked:

"Can we trust it?"

Sorion looked toward the sea.

"I think so."

Bardin's voice came through the communicator.

"It doesn't tell us where to go."

He looked back at the ancient machine.

"It tells us what the world remembers."

BACK TO THE SURFACE

Bardin began swimming upward.

The Resonator remained behind.

Its lights slowly dimmed.

The creatures returned to the deep.

The ancient machine resumed its quiet work.

It had waited thousands of years.

Not for warriors.

Not for conquerors.

Not for kings.

For someone willing to listen.

Bardin broke through the surface.

SPLASH.

Dorion helped pull him aboard.

Bardin removed his helmet.

Everyone looked at him.

He smiled.

"We found something."

Lirion raised an eyebrow.

"Another machine?"

"Yes."

"A weapon?"

"No."

"A Gate?"

Bardin shook his head.

"Something better."

He looked at the endless sea.

"A memory."

Sorion stood beside him.

"And a road."

The skiff began moving again.

Behind them, deep beneath the waves, the Abyssal Resonator continued to listen.

Ahead lay the southern waters.

Beyond them waited the Shrouden Swamps.

And somewhere within the mist...

Mirehaven was waiting to be remembered.
