The staircase continued downward.
No one spoke.
The deeper the questors descended beneath Zython Hold, the warmer the air became. The stone walls gradually changed into something harder and darker, reinforced by bronze ribs that disappeared into the mountain.
The heartbeat remained.
THUM.
A pause.
THUM.
Sorion kept the Compass in his hand.
Each pulse seemed to answer it.
Bardin walked several steps behind the others, his Frog Exo-Suit folded around his body but not activated.
He had learned something during their journey.
Not every battle belonged to him.
The deeper they went, the more dangerous the atmosphere became.
Dorion noticed him looking at the darkness ahead.
Dorion: "Stay behind us."
Bardin raised an eyebrow.
Bardin: "You're telling me not to fight?"
Dorion: "I'm telling you to listen."
Bardin smiled.
Bardin: "That's worse."
Lirion almost laughed.
Almost.
Then the staircase ended.
The Chamber Below
The questors stepped into an enormous underground chamber.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The room was too large to understand immediately.
Its ceiling disappeared into darkness.
Massive bronze columns supported the mountain overhead.
Ancient machines rested between them.
Some were dismantled.
Some were incomplete.
Others looked almost human.
They stood motionless in rows.
Human-shaped bodies.
Metal limbs.
Bronze plating.
Crystal cores.
But unlike the machines they had encountered above, these constructs had something unsettling about them.
They looked capable of making decisions.
Not simply following instructions.
Dorion slowly raised his shield.
Dorion: "They're soldiers."
Lirion scanned the nearest one.
His expression hardened.
Lirion: "Not ordinary soldiers."
The machine's body contained biological components.
Lirion's scanner detected muscle.
Nerve pathways.
Artificial organs.
Technomagik channels woven directly into mechanical systems.
He whispered:
Lirion: "They're hybrids."
Valek stepped closer.
Valek: "Human?"
Lirion nodded.
Lirion: "Partly."
Bardin's expression changed.
He took one step backward.
Bardin: "Are they alive?"
Lirion stared at the sleeping figure.
Lirion: "I don't know."
Then one of them opened its eyes.
A blue crystal ignited.
CLICK.
Another awakened.
CLICK.
Then another.
The chamber began filling with blue light.
One.
Five.
Ten.
Twenty.
The machines slowly turned their heads toward the questors.
Nobody attacked.
Not yet.
A figure stepped forward.
Unlike the others, this one appeared almost completely human.
A man's face.
Dark hair.
Metal extending from one side of his neck.
One arm was mechanical.
The other looked human.
His chest contained a bronze Technomagik core.
He stopped several meters away.
His eyes moved across the group.
Dorion.
Lirion.
Valek.
Sorion.
Then Bardin.
He stared at Bardin's Frog Exo-Suit.
For a long moment, neither side spoke.
Finally, the humanoid said:
"State your purpose."
Dorion lowered his shield slightly.
Dorion: "We seek the Hold."
The humanoid's expression did not change.
"You are inside it."
Dorion glanced around.
Dorion: "Then we seek the one who brought us here."
The humanoid studied him.
"Who?"
Dorion hesitated.
Dorion: "We don't know."
The humanoid's mechanical eye narrowed.
"Then leave."
Sorion stepped forward.
Sorion: "We followed the memory."
The humanoid turned toward him.
For the first time, something changed in his expression.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Then suspicion.
"Whose memory?"
Sorion didn't answer immediately.
Sorion: "We don't know."
The humanoid's hand moved toward the weapon attached to his mechanical arm.
Lirion noticed.
Lirion: "Wait."
The humanoid looked at him.
Lirion: "We're not here to take anything."
A faint mechanical sound came from the soldier's chest.
WHIRR.
"Everyone who enters says that."
The Misunderstanding
Dorion stepped forward.
Dorion: "We're searching for a relic."
The chamber changed.
Every machine behind the humanoid turned toward him.
KLANG.
Weapons unfolded.
Bardin immediately stepped backward.
Bardin: "That was probably the wrong sentence."
Dorion tightened his grip.
Dorion: "We aren't here to steal it."
The humanoid stared at him.
"You admit the relic exists."
Lirion cursed under his breath.
Lirion: "Dorion..."
Dorion realized the mistake.
But it was too late.
The humanoid raised his mechanical arm.
Energy gathered around it.
Not electricity.
Technomagik.
Bronze light crawled through the machine's veins.
"You will not pass."
Sorion stepped between them.
Sorion: "Wait."
The humanoid stopped.
Sorion looked directly into his eyes.
Sorion: "We don't know what relic you're protecting."
The humanoid remained silent.
Sorion: "We only know that something here remembers."
That sentence changed everything.
The humanoid's eyes narrowed.
"Who told you that?"
Sorion answered honestly.
Sorion: "No one."
The humanoid's weapon began to glow again.
"Then you are lying."
Lirion stepped forward.
Lirion: "We're not."
The humanoid suddenly moved.
The First Attack
He crossed the distance almost instantly.
BOOM!
Dorion barely raised his shield.
The impact threw him backward.
He slid across the stone floor.
SKRRRRRRT!
Lirion reacted immediately.
Noetic Fluid erupted from his arm.
A black Technomagik blade formed.
He struck.
The humanoid blocked.
KLANG!
The impact sent sparks across the chamber.
Lirion stepped back.
The humanoid rotated his mechanical arm.
A second weapon emerged.
A narrow energy blade.
Lirion's eyes widened.
The humanoid attacked again.
Fast.
Too fast.
Lirion blocked the first strike.
The second slipped past.
He twisted his body aside.
The blade cut through his shoulder armor.
SHRRRK!
Lirion jumped backward.
Dorion charged.
His shield struck the humanoid.
BOOM!
The hybrid soldier slid several meters.
Then stopped.
He looked at Dorion.
For the first time—
he smiled.
Not kindly.
Respectfully.
"You are strong."
Dorion raised his shield.
Dorion: "You're about to find out."
The humanoid lowered his stance.
"So are you."
The Duel
The chamber erupted.
Dorion attacked first.
His greatsword came down with tremendous force.
The humanoid moved aside.
The sword struck the floor.
KRAAAANG!
Stone cracked.
The humanoid countered immediately.
His mechanical fist struck Dorion's shield.
BOOM!
Dorion staggered.
The hybrid spun.
His mechanical leg struck Dorion's side.
Dorion crashed into a pillar.
THUD!
Lirion attacked from behind.
A wave of black Noetic Fluid surged across the floor.
The humanoid jumped.
The wave passed beneath him.
He landed directly behind Lirion.
Lirion turned.
Too late.
The humanoid struck.
Lirion blocked with a Technomagik barrier.
BOOOOM!
The barrier shattered.
Lirion flew backward.
Valek charged.
His weapon struck the hybrid's mechanical arm.
CLANG!
The humanoid turned.
Their weapons locked.
For several seconds they stood face-to-face.
Machine against human.
Strength against strength.
Then the hybrid's mechanical arm released a pulse.
WHUM!
Valek was thrown across the chamber.
Sorion moved.
His silver-violet energy appeared around his body.
He did not rush.
He watched.
The humanoid noticed.
He turned toward Sorion.
"You."
Sorion said nothing.
"You are the one the machines recognized."
Sorion's eyes narrowed.
Sorion: "What do you know about them?"
The humanoid attacked.
Sorion vanished sideways.
The blade passed through empty air.
Sorion reappeared behind him.
He struck the hybrid's back.
KRAK!
The humanoid stumbled.
Sorion didn't continue.
He stepped away.
The hybrid turned.
For several seconds, they stared at one another.
Then the hybrid smiled again.
"You fight differently."
Sorion answered:
"So do you."
The Masters Awaken
The duel had been enough.
But the other machines were no longer waiting.
The sound began slowly.
KLANG.
One machine stepped forward.
Then another.
Then five.
The humanoid raised his hand.
"Stand down."
They stopped.
For one moment, the chamber became quiet.
Then something behind them opened.
A deep mechanical sound shook the mountain.
GRRRRRRRRRR...
The floor vibrated.
Lirion looked down.
Lirion: "That isn't one of them."
A massive door opened at the far end of the chamber.
Behind it stood more humanoids.
But these were different.
Their bodies were almost entirely mechanical.
Their faces were human.
Their eyes contained multiple Technomagik lenses.
Each carried a different weapon.
One had a massive blade.
Another carried twin energy spears.
A third had mechanical wings folded across its back.
The fourth carried a staff surrounded by rotating crystal rings.
The fifth—
simply stood there.
And every other machine moved aside for it.
Bardin quietly backed toward the wall.
He switched his Frog Exo-Suit to defensive mode.
KSSHHK.
Dorion looked toward him.
Bardin shook his head.
Bardin: "I'm staying out of this one."
Dorion nodded.
Dorion: "Good."
Bardin raised his lute.
Bardin: "I'll watch the exits."
He wasn't afraid.
He simply understood.
This battle belonged to the fighters.
The Ironbound Masters
The first master stepped forward.
Its face was human.
Old.
Scarred.
Half of its jaw was mechanical.
"Intruders."
The second stepped beside it.
"Memory thieves."
Lirion immediately responded.
Lirion: "We're not thieves."
The third tilted its head.
"Then why did you awaken the archive?"
Lirion froze.
He looked at Sorion.
The fourth master raised its staff.
"Why did the Guardian respond to you?"
Sorion stepped forward.
Sorion: "Because we followed a signal."
The fifth master finally spoke.
Its voice was quiet.
Almost human.
"Whose signal?"
Sorion looked toward the darkness behind them.
Sorion: "We don't know."
The machine stared at him.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then—
"Truth."
The others looked at it.
The master continued.
"He speaks truth."
The first machine stepped forward.
"Then why does the relic resonate?"
The fifth master answered:
"Because it remembers them."
Silence.
Dorion looked at Sorion.
Lirion looked at the master.
Nobody understood.
Then the fifth master raised its hand.
"But memory without permission is trespass."
The chamber exploded into motion.
The Rumble
The first master charged Dorion.
Dorion met it head-on.
BOOOOM!
The collision shook the chamber.
Lirion faced the Technomagik staff wielder.
The staff rotated.
Four crystal rings spun around it.
Energy gathered.
Lirion's eyes widened.
Lirion: "That's a spell."
The master released it.
A wave of force tore through the chamber.
Lirion threw up a Noetic barrier.
WHOOOOOM!
The impact drove him backward.
He dug his boots into the stone.
The barrier cracked.
KRRRKK!
Lirion gritted his teeth.
Lirion: "You're not supposed to be able to do that."
The machine tilted its head.
"Neither are you."
Lirion smiled.
Lirion: "Fair."
He released the barrier.
The energy wave collided with his Noetic Fluid.
Black and bronze Technomagik exploded across the chamber.
BOOOOOOM!
Valek engaged the twin-spear master.
Every strike came with military precision.
Valek blocked one.
Two.
Three.
The fourth strike cut across his armor.
SHRRRK!
Valek stepped backward.
The machine attacked again.
Valek ducked.
The spear passed over his head.
He grabbed the weapon.
Pulled.
The machine resisted.
For several seconds they struggled.
Then Valek drove his knee into its chest.
THUD!
The machine staggered.
Valek ripped one spear away.
The machine stared at him.
"Improvisation."
Valek raised the stolen weapon.
Valek: "Survival."
The machine attacked.
Dorion and the Ironbound
Dorion's duel had become brutal.
The first master fought like a veteran soldier.
It didn't waste movement.
Every attack was calculated.
Dorion swung his greatsword.
The machine blocked with its arm.
KRAAANG!
Dorion followed with his shield.
The machine ducked.
A mechanical elbow struck Dorion's ribs.
THUD!
He staggered.
The machine's fist came toward his face.
Dorion raised his shield.
BOOM!
The shield bent slightly.
Dorion stared at it.
Then smiled.
Dorion: "You're good."
The machine answered:
"I have fought for a very long time."
Dorion tightened his grip.
Dorion: "Then fight me longer."
His Guardian Greatsword ignited.
Molten gold-red energy ran along the blade.
The machine's eyes brightened.
For the first time, it drew both weapons.
The two warriors charged.
BOOOOOOM!
Their collision sent a shockwave across the chamber.
Ancient pillars shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The machines watching from the darkness did not interfere.
They were witnessing something.
Not simply combat.
A test.
Bardin Watches
Bardin remained near the entrance.
His fingers rested on his lute.
He could hear every impact.
Every explosion.
Every metallic scream.
His instincts told him to join.
But he didn't.
Instead, he watched.
The masters weren't mindless machines.
They were studying the questors.
Testing them.
Learning them.
And something about the battle bothered him.
Every time Sorion moved, the machines adjusted.
Every time Lirion used Noetic Fluid, they adapted.
Every time Dorion changed his fighting rhythm, the master changed with him.
They weren't simply strong.
They were learning.
Bardin whispered:
"They're remembering how we fight."
Then he noticed something else.
Behind the machines, one small crystal had begun glowing.
It pulsed with the same rhythm as Sorion's Compass.
THUM.
Bardin's expression changed.
He looked toward Sorion.
Then toward the crystal.
He understood something the others hadn't noticed.
The battle wasn't activating the machines.
The battle was activating something deeper.
The Chamber Breaks
A tremendous explosion suddenly shook the entire Hold.
BOOOOOOOOM!
Everyone stopped.
The ceiling cracked.
A massive section of stone collapsed.
Dorion jumped aside.
Lirion threw up a barrier.
Valek rolled across the floor.
Bardin activated his Frog Exo-Suit and fired its propulsion system.
FWOOSH!
He leapt away from the falling debris.
The chamber filled with dust.
The machines stopped fighting.
Even the Ironbound Masters looked upward.
A second rumble followed.
THUUUUUM.
Sorion's Compass began glowing.
The twelve symbols carved into the walls appeared again.
One after another.
Then all at once.
The floor beneath the chamber cracked.
A golden-green light emerged from below.
Everyone stared.
The master closest to Sorion lowered its weapon.
For the first time, its expression showed something resembling fear.
"No..."
Another tremor.
THUM.
The master whispered:
"It is awake."
Sorion looked at him.
Sorion: "What is?"
The machine didn't answer.
Instead, all five Ironbound Masters turned toward the same sealed door.
The door had not been visible before.
Now it was opening.
Slowly.
Ancient mechanisms began turning beneath the floor.
The battle was forgotten.
The machines lowered their weapons.
Even the masters stepped backward.
Bardin looked at Sorion.
Bardin: "Whatever is behind that door..."
Sorion nodded.
The Compass burned brightly in his hand.
Bardin: "...I don't think they wanted us to wake it."
The door opened another meter.
A wave of ancient Technomagik rolled through the chamber.
Not hostile.
Not friendly.
Simply old.
The kind of power that had been waiting long enough to forget why it had been sealed.
Sorion stared into the opening.
And from somewhere beyond the door came a voice.
Soft.
Human.
Almost impossibly distant.
"Why do you remember me?"
The chamber went silent.
No one moved.
No machine attacked.
No weapon was raised.
For the first time since entering Zython Hold, even the masters seemed uncertain.
Because the question had not been directed at them.
It had been directed at Sorion.
And the Compass answered before he could.
THUM.
THUM.
THUM.
Deep beneath the Hold, something remembered.
And the mountain began to shake.
