Chapter 26 - The Price of Choice

The silence that came after the word war lasted less than a second.

But it was enough.

Because everyone understood.

There was no more negotiation.

There was no more waiting.

Only action.

The first move came from them.

From the men.

Fast.

Direct.

Without warning.

— Now! — Daniel shouted.

Everything happened at once.

Steps.

Shouts.

Bodies advancing.

Verônica barely had time to react before she felt someone grabbing her arm.

— Let go! — she shouted, trying to break free.

Leon was already there.

A quick, precise movement.

He pulled the man back and pushed Verônica.

— Run!

But she didn't run.

Not this time.

— I won't—

Another man came.

Daniel stepped in front.

The impact between them made a dry sound on the floor.

The air turned heavy.

Chaotic.

Verônica stepped back.

Heart racing.

Breath failing.

But her eyes…

Sharp.

Watching.

Learning.

— Stay back! — Leon shouted.

— No!

She grabbed a piece of metal from the ground.

Didn't think.

Just reacted.

One of the men came toward her.

She raised the object—

And struck.

The sound echoed.

The man stepped back.

Surprised.

Just like her.

For a second.

Just one.

— That's it! — Daniel shouted.

— Focus!

The chaos increased.

More men.

More movement.

Leon took one down.

Then another.

Daniel held off two at the same time.

Verônica tried not to freeze.

But the fear was there.

Mixed with something new.

Determination.

And then—

A different sound.

Sharp.

Short.

A gunshot.

The world stopped.

For a second.

Just one.

Verônica didn't feel it at first.

She only saw.

Leon stopping.

His body freezing.

And then—

He dropped to his knees.

— LEON!

The scream came before she could think.

Her heart raced.

The air vanished.

— No…

She ran to him.

— Leon!

The blood.

Starting to appear.

Too fast.

— No, no, no—

— I'm… — he tried to speak — I'm fine—

— You're not!

Her voice trembled.

But her eyes…

Changed.

Daniel turned.

Saw it.

And his world changed too.

— You just made a mistake — he said.

His voice…

Cold.

Different.

Dangerous.

The man smiled.

— That's part of it.

— No — Verônica said.

Her voice came out low.

But loaded.

Much more than before.

She stood up slowly.

Eyes locked on him.

— This ends now.

Silence fell.

But this time…

Different.

Heavy.

Dense.

— You still don't understand — the man said.

— I do.

She took a step forward.

— This was never about money.

Another step.

— Never about companies.

Another.

— It was about control.

The man watched.

Without interrupting.

— And you think you can control this — she continued.

— I know I can.

— No.

She shook her head.

— You only continued something that started wrong.

Silence lingered.

— And what are you going to do? — he asked.

— Finish it.

The answer came directly.

Without hesitation.

And then—

— Stop!

The voice.

Strong.

Authoritative.

Different.

Everyone looked.

At the warehouse entrance.

Men.

But not the same ones.

More organized.

More prepared.

And among them…

A familiar face.

— Henrique Salazar.

Leon tried to lift his head.

— No…

Verônica frowned.

— You…

The man smiled.

But not like before.

— Took you long enough.

Silence fell.

But now…

Full of meaning.

— You knew all of this — Verônica said.

— I lived all of this.

He walked slowly.

— And you let it happen?

— I was waiting.

— For what?

He looked at her.

Directly.

— You.

Her heart raced.

— Me?

— You're the only one who can end this.

Silence remained.

Stronger than ever.

— He said the same thing — she murmured.

— And he's right.

— Then why all of this?

— Because you needed to understand.

— Understand what?!

Her voice rose.

— That this can't be destroyed from the outside.

Silence came.

And then—

— Only from within.

The world seemed to stop.

Verônica looked around.

Leon on the ground.

Injured.

Daniel tense.

The men.

The chaos.

And then…

She understood.

For real.

— This doesn't end with a fight — she said.

Silence fell.

— Then how does it end? — Daniel asked.

She took a deep breath.

And answered:

— By taking control.

The air grew heavy.

Irreversible.

— You don't know what you're saying — Leon said, weakly.

She looked at him.

Her eyes…

Filled with something new.

— I do.

Silence remained.

Henrique smiled slightly.

— Now…

His voice came out low.

Satisfied.

— Now you understand.

And in that moment…

Verônica stopped being the target.

And became…

The main piece.
