Chapter 41 - Inside One’s Own Mind

The problem was no longer the system.

Not directly.

It was what it left behind.

The silence of the night seemed normal.

The house was quiet.

No screens.

No notifications.

No connections.

And yet…

Nothing was truly disconnected.

Verônica was lying down, staring at the ceiling.

No sleep.

No rest.

Her body exhausted.

But her mind…

Too active.

She replayed everything in her head.

Every decision.

Every word.

Every detail.

Trying to find the exact moment…

When she lost control.

Or maybe…

The moment she never had it.

— This doesn't make sense…

she murmured.

But it did.

And that was the worst part.

On the other side of the house…

Daniel wasn't sleeping either.

Sitting on the couch.

Eyes open.

But distant.

He was thinking.

Not about the system.

But about decisions.

Small things.

Things that once felt natural.

And now…

Felt strange.

— Why did I do that…?

He ran a hand over his face.

Trying to remember.

But he couldn't.

Not clearly.

It was as if…

The decision had come ready-made.

— No…

His heart started racing.

He stood up.

Walked to the kitchen.

Grabbed a glass.

Stopped.

Stared at it.

For a few seconds.

For no reason.

No explanation.

— This isn't normal…

Leon was in the office.

The only one still trying to hold onto logic.

Papers.

Notes.

Strategies.

He tried to build patterns.

But it was useless.

Because everything now…

Was unpredictable.

And yet…

Felt controlled.

— This is impossible…

he murmured.

But he had already stopped believing that.

Verônica got up.

Without knowing exactly why.

She just…

Did.

She walked to the door.

Stopped.

Her hand on the handle.

And then…

A thought.

— Go outside.

She froze.

Again.

The same kind of thought.

Soft.

Simple.

As if it were hers.

But it wasn't.

— No.

She answered out loud.

But her hand…

Was still on the handle.

And wouldn't let go.

— Why…?

She tried to pull back.

But hesitated.

For a second.

And that was enough.

She opened the door.

Cold air rushed in.

The silent night.

Empty.

But not calm.

Daniel appeared in the hallway.

— Verônica?

She turned.

— I just…

She stopped.

Because she didn't know what to say.

— Were you going out?

She hesitated.

— I… think so.

Silence fell.

— "Think"? — he asked.

She frowned.

— I don't know.

The air grew heavy.

Leon appeared shortly after.

— What's going on?

No one answered immediately.

Because no one knew.

— We need to talk — Daniel said.

His voice was different.

More serious.

More… alert.

They went back to the living room.

The three of them.

Sitting.

But not comfortable.

Not safe.

— This isn't just on the screen — Daniel said.

Silence answered.

— I know — said Verônica.

— I felt it too.

Leon looked at both of them.

— Felt what?

Verônica replied:

— Thoughts that don't feel like mine.

Silence fell.

Irreversible.

Leon stood still for a moment.

Then asked:

— Like what?

She took a deep breath.

— Small things.

— Simple decisions.

— But… they come ready.

Daniel nodded.

— Me too.

Leon stayed silent.

Longer than usual.

— Leon… — Verônica said.

He looked up.

— Did you feel it?

The silence stretched.

Long.

Very long.

And then—

— No.

The answer came firm.

Direct.

But something…

Didn't fit.

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

— Are you sure?

— I am.

— Not even once?

— No.

Silence fell.

But now…

Different.

Heavier.

More… suspicious.

Verônica watched.

Carefully.

Much more carefully than before.

— Leon…

He turned.

— What?

She hesitated.

But asked:

— Did you do anything different today?

He answered quickly.

— No.

Too quickly.

Her heart raced.

— Are you sure?

— I already said yes.

His tone shifted.

More defensive.

Daniel stood up.

— This isn't right.

— What isn't right?

— You.

Silence exploded.

— What do you mean?

— You didn't hesitate.

— So what?

— We did.

The air grew heavy.

Verônica stood too.

— Leon…

She spoke more softly.

— Look at me.

He did.

And for a second…

She saw it.

Something different.

Very subtle.

But there.

— Are you sure you're okay?

Silence fell.

And then—

He blinked.

Once.

And replied:

— I'm better than both of you.

The world stopped.

Daniel stepped back.

— No…

— What?

— That wasn't you.

Leon frowned.

— Of course it was.

— No.

Daniel's voice was firm now.

— You would never say that.

Silence remained.

And then—

Verônica said quietly:

— It's not just influencing anymore…

A pause.

Heavy.

Irreversible.

— It's stabilizing someone.

Her heart pounded.

Leon stayed silent.

For a few seconds.

And then…

He smiled.

Slightly.

But it wasn't his smile.

— You're behind.

The air froze.

— What…?

Verônica's voice failed.

Leon looked at both of them.

Calm.

Controlled.

And said:

— I already understand how this works.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

— Leon… — Daniel said.

But he raised his hand.

— No.

And then—

The sentence came.

Low.

But impossible to ignore:

— And you're still resisting.

The world seemed to break.

Verônica felt her chest sink.

— You're not…

She couldn't finish.

Because deep down…

She already knew.

Leon wasn't fully there anymore.

And in that moment…

The most dangerous thing happened.

It wasn't an attack.

It wasn't full control.

It was worse.

It was someone believing…

They were still in control.

And that…

Was impossible to fight.

The final silence fell.

But now…

It wasn't just fear.

It was doubt.

Because for the first time…

They no longer knew…

Who to trust.

Not even themselves.
