Chapter 4 - The Beastmen Village’s Shocking Discovery: A Rare Human Female Has Appeared!

"She's human? A real human female? By the ancestors, how did we not smell it sooner?"

The shout rang out sharp and loud just outside the cave, cutting through the morning bustle like a stone axe through dry wood. Multiple deep voices rose at once—some excited, some wary, all of them buzzing with the kind of energy that made Qinglan's frail heart slam against her ribs. She sat bolt upright on the furs, the half-eaten strip of dried meat falling from her fingers.

Elder Shen burst back inside a heartbeat later, his wrinkled face flushed and his breathing ragged. He didn't even bother with the usual gentle tone. "Quickly, little one! We have to move you—now! Someone saw you through the vines when I brought the water. The whole village knows. They're gathering outside, and the beastmen patrols are already on their way from the forest edge. Hide your eyes. Keep your head down. Say as little as possible."

Qinglan's mind spun. One moment she had been steeling herself with memories of betrayal and survival plans; the next, reality was crashing in faster than she could brace for. She scrambled to her feet, legs still shaky, and let the elder drape a heavy fur cloak around her thin shoulders. The material smelled of smoke and wild grass, rough against her skin.

"What do I do?" she whispered, forcing her voice to tremble the way a frightened orphan girl should. Inside, though, her past-life instincts were already calculating—counting exits, measuring threats, remembering every scrap of borrowed memory about how beastmen reacted to rare females.

Elder Shen gripped her elbow with surprising strength and guided her toward the cave mouth. "Stay behind me. Act weak. They won't hurt you—not yet—but humans are legends here. Most of them have only heard stories. A living, breathing human girl? They'll either worship you or fight over who gets to claim you first. Just breathe slowly and let me speak."

The moment they stepped outside, the noise hit her like a wall.

Dozens of villagers had crowded into the small clearing in front of the elder's cave. Beastmen in their human forms—tall, broad-shouldered, with sharp eyes and faint animal markings on their skin—stood shoulder to shoulder with the few ordinary folk. A massive leopard beastman with golden spots across his bare chest pushed forward, nostrils flaring as he inhaled deeply. Beside him, a younger wolf shifter with messy dark hair stared wide-eyed, mouth half-open in disbelief.

"It's true," the leopard growled, voice rough and rumbling. "No fur, no scales, no wings. Pure human scent—soft, clean, and… rare." His gaze locked onto Qinglan with an intensity that made the mate bond in her chest give a sudden, warning throb. "Name's Mu Lei. You really human, little one?"

Qinglan kept her eyes lowered exactly as Elder Shen had warned, letting her shoulders hunch in fear. "I… I don't remember much," she murmured, exactly the way a confused, frail girl would. "Just the river. And Elder Shen being kind."

Whispers exploded around them.

"Human female… never seen one alive…"

"The Wolf Clan will want her. Their Alpha always claims the best treasures…"

"If we hide her, we could trade her for protection. Or keep her here and let the village prosper!"

One older woman—a fox shifter with sly eyes—pushed closer, voice dripping with false sweetness. "Poor thing looks half-starved. We should feed her the best cuts. Females like her bring strong cubs, you know. The gods have finally blessed us."

Qinglan's stomach twisted. Worshipped. Claimed. Traded. The words from yesterday's conversation with Elder Shen now felt horribly real. In her old life she had negotiated million-dollar deals without blinking; here she was being sized up like livestock in a market. The pull in her chest pulsed again, stronger, tugging her gaze toward the tree line where the forest met the village. Something—someone—was watching from the shadows. She could feel it.

Elder Shen raised both hands, voice steady but firm. "Enough! The girl is under my protection until she regains her strength. She nearly drowned. She's too weak to be moved or questioned. Anyone who disturbs her now risks angering the spirits—and the Wolf Clan patrols that will arrive by midday. Let her rest. We'll decide her fate properly once the scouts have come and gone."

Mu Lei crossed his arms, muscles rippling under spotted skin, but he gave a single respectful nod. "Fine. But I'm not leaving. If she's really human, she needs real protection. One strong male at least." His golden eyes flicked back to Qinglan, softening just a fraction. "You scared, little female? No one here will hurt you. Not while I'm around."

She managed a tiny, shaky nod, playing the part perfectly while her mind raced. This leopard—Mu Lei—was already showing interest. The mate bond hadn't flared for him the way it did when the Wolf Clan was mentioned, but the attention still felt dangerous. Too much focus and her secrets would spill out.

The crowd slowly backed off, though they didn't disperse. They hovered at the edges of the clearing, whispering, pointing, already imagining what a human female could mean for their tiny village—alliances, stronger offspring, status among the bigger tribes. Someone started a small fire in the center of the space, and the scent of fresh meat roasting drifted over. Offerings, already. Worship beginning before she had even said more than ten words.

Elder Shen guided her back toward the cave entrance but stopped short when a new voice called from the path leading into the forest.

"Elder! Patrol from the Snake Valley just crossed the river. They caught wind of the scent too. And… the Wolf Clan scouts are right behind them. Looks like the news traveled faster than we thought."

Qinglan's breath caught. The pull in her chest surged so strongly she had to press a hand over her heart to hide the tremble. Helian Xuan. The name floated up from the merged memories like a warning bell. The ruthless Alpha whose shadow already stretched across this entire region.

She kept her face blank, the perfect picture of a frightened orphan girl, but inside the reborn businesswoman was already planning three steps ahead. Hide the knowledge. Hide the strength. Hide whatever this mysterious bond was trying to drag into the light.

Because the Beastmen Village had just discovered its rarest treasure.

And the real predators were already on their way.
