Chapter 11 - A Ferocious Leopard Beastman Appears – Mu Lei’s Fiery Gaze Locks Onto Me!

"Stand down, leopard. This is Wolf Clan business now."

The scarred leader of the patrol didn't even raise his voice, but the threat in it cut through the clearing like a claw through flesh. His four companions tightened their formation, bone spears shifting in their grips, eyes locked on Mu Lei like he was the only thing standing between them and their prize.

Mu Lei didn't move an inch.

Instead, the big leopard beastman took one slow, deliberate step forward, placing himself fully between Qinglan and the entire Wolf Clan patrol. His broad shoulders rolled, golden spots rippling across his skin as the air around him shimmered with the first warning of a shift. A low, guttural growl built in his chest—deep, feral, the kind that made the birds in the nearest trees fall silent.

"You want her?" Mu Lei's voice came out rough and burning, every word laced with raw fury. "Then you'll have to go through me first. She's under village protection. Elder Shen gave his word. I gave mine. The Alpha can wait one more day."

Qinglan's breath caught in her throat. She stayed half-hidden behind the elder, cloak pulled tight, but she couldn't stop herself from peeking at Mu Lei. His back was to her, yet the sheer presence of him filled the space—muscles coiled like a predator ready to spring, fists clenched so hard the veins stood out along his forearms. This wasn't the same protective guard who had stood watch last night. This was something fiercer. Something that made the mate bond in her chest give a startled little flutter, even though the strongest pull still tugged toward the distant Wolf Clan territories.

Elder Shen's hand tightened on her elbow. "Mu Lei, careful," he whispered urgently. "They outnumber us. Don't start a blood feud over—"

But Mu Lei wasn't listening. He took another step, head lowering like a leopard sighting prey. His golden eyes—sharp, blazing—flicked over his shoulder for the briefest second and locked straight onto hers.

The gaze hit her like a physical blow.

Fiery. Intense. Burning with something wild and protective and… hungry. It wasn't the cold calculation of the Wolf Clan scouts. It wasn't the distant, ruthless power she felt pulling at her from afar. This was raw, immediate, and it pinned her in place. For one heartbeat, Qinglan forgot to play the frail orphan. Her own eyes widened behind the cloak, and she felt heat rush to her cheeks despite the morning chill.

Mu Lei's nostrils flared. He had seen it—the tiny crack in her mask. His growl deepened, almost possessive now, before he tore his gaze away and faced the patrol again.

"The girl stays," he snarled, voice loud enough for the entire village to hear. "She's too weak. One forced march through the forest and she'll die before she ever reaches your Alpha's camp. Tell Helian Xuan that Mu Lei of the Leopard Clan stands in his way. If he wants her that badly, he can come get her himself."

The scarred leader's gray eyes narrowed dangerously. "You'd defy the Alpha over one human female? Bold words for a lone leopard in a backwater village."

Mu Lei's form rippled again—bones cracking softly, claws beginning to peek from his fingertips as the shift threatened to take him fully. "Not one female. My female to protect until the elder says otherwise. Touch her and I'll paint the river red with Wolf Clan blood before the sun sets."

The tension snapped taut. Villagers who had been watching from the edges of the clearing started backing away, some shifting into their animal forms with nervous growls. Qinglan's heart hammered so hard she was sure everyone could hear it. Inside, her modern mind was screaming warnings—she could already see three ways this standoff could turn into a bloodbath, and none of them ended well for a frail human girl caught in the middle. But she kept perfectly still, trembling on purpose, letting the scene play out while she memorized every detail: the patrol's spear grips, Mu Lei's fighting stance, the exact angle of the sun that would blind the wolves if a fight broke out.

The mate bond in her chest twisted sharply, torn between the fiery gaze still burning on her skin and the stronger, colder pull coming from the forest depths. Two forces. Two dangers. And she was stuck between them with nothing but a weak body and secrets she couldn't afford to reveal.

Elder Shen stepped forward, voice steady despite the fear in his eyes. "Enough. Mu Lei speaks for the village today. The girl needs rest. One more day. Take that message back to your Alpha. We are loyal… but we are not fools who kill a treasure through carelessness."

The scarred leader stared at Mu Lei for a long, silent moment. Then his lips curled into a cold smile. "One day. No more. The Alpha's patience has limits. And so does ours." He jerked his head at his men, and the patrol began to withdraw—slowly, deliberately, eyes never leaving the leopard beastman or the small figure behind him.

Mu Lei didn't relax until the last wolf had disappeared into the trees. Only then did he turn fully toward her, that fiery golden gaze locking onto her face once more. Softer this time. Almost gentle. But still burning.

"You alright, little female?" he asked, voice rough but careful, like he was afraid his words might break her. "I won't let them take you. Not today. Not ever, if I can help it."

Qinglan managed a tiny, shaky nod, lowering her eyes before he could see the storm of thoughts behind them.

But inside, the reborn woman from another world felt the first real crack in her careful walls.

Mu Lei's ferocious protection had just bought her time.

And his gaze had just made everything far more complicated.
