Chapter 60: The Waters of Lethe
(Ruby's POV)
The morning after feels like waking from a nightmare.
Sunlight streams through the windows of the safe house. Birds are singing somewhere outside. The world looks peaceful, calm, like nothing bad ever happened here.
But I know better.
Kai is gone. Maybe dead. Maybe hiding. Maybe planning his next move.
I sit up on the couch, rubbing my eyes. Nicholas is still asleep beside me, his arm draped over my waist. His face is relaxed, peaceful. He looks younger in sleep.
I don't want to wake him. So I just watch.
His chest rises and falls. His lips are slightly parted. His dark hair falls across his forehead.
I think about the first time I saw him. In that dark hotel room. His voice cold, his touch clinical. I was so afraid of him.
Now I can't imagine my life without him.
"Stop staring," he mumbles.
"You're awake."
"Barely." He opens one eye. "What time is it?"
"Late. Everyone else is already up."
