Chapter 49 - The Broken Past

No one spoke for a while after Jenny stepped away from the symbol. The air felt heavier now, filled with something none of them could fully explain. It was not fear, not exactly. It was the feeling of standing at the edge of something much bigger than themselves. Jenny looked at her hands for a moment, still feeling the faint warmth left behind by the vision. What she had seen was not just a memory. It was a warning.

Kevin was the first to break the silence. "What exactly did you see?" he asked, his voice calm but serious. Jenny took a breath before answering. She explained the figures she had seen, the earlier guardians, and the way the realm had once been alive and whole. She spoke about the sudden shift, the moment everything began to fall apart, though even she could not fully understand what had caused it. Zoe listened carefully, her mind already trying to connect it with the energy patterns she had been tracking.

"It matches," Zoe said after a moment. "The energy here isn't natural anymore. It feels… damaged. Like something broke the balance." Louis nodded slowly, adding that the spires they had seen earlier could be part of that balance, something designed to hold the realm together. Jake crossed his arms, thinking quietly, while Stebin looked around with a new kind of focus. This was no longer just a place they needed to survive. It was something that had been hurt.

Jenny stepped forward again, her voice steady. "Then we find out what broke it." There was no hesitation in her tone this time. The others looked at her, and one by one, they nodded. Whatever had happened here was not finished. The realm was still reacting, still testing them, and now they understood why. It wasn't just trying to stop them. It was trying to see if they were strong enough to fix what had gone wrong.

As they moved toward the tallest spire, the light around it flickered slightly, as if responding to their decision. The ground beneath their feet no longer felt as unstable as before, but the silence remained, watching them, waiting. They could feel it now more clearly than ever. Something was ahead. Not just danger, but answers.

Jenny kept her eyes forward, her grip tightening slightly. "Whatever we find," she said quietly, "we face it together." And this time, no one needed to reply.
