Chapter 7- City In Hell (Part 3)
Rein spat out a mouthful of saliva before he walked slowly toward the dying dog. Reaching it, he stared down into its eyes. The monster still had a fighting spirit as it glared daggers at him. However, it can't move its body at all.
"You really hate me, huh?" He asked. "Well, no hard feelings. This world is eat or get eaten now. You were stupid enough to leave your back open for an ambush."
The monster huffed tiredly as if scoffing at his words. So, Rein laughed dryly and then aimed his sword at its neck.
"It is what it is. Goodbye." He muttered before he swung his sword. The blade stabbed through the monster's neck, sinking deep into its body. Its eyes widened for a second before they slowly started losing light until… It died.
[You have killed a Level 5 Mutated Golden Retriever.]
[You have gained +5 points in strength, agility, and stamina.]
[You have leveled up.]
[You have leveled up.]
[You have gained + 6 points to allocate freely.]
[You have gained a Skill Rune.]
"Oh. Was he a Level 5 beast? Damn, he is quite strong, as I expected. Also…"
As he read that info, Rein started feeling a lot of energy being pumped into his body out of nowhere. His muscles felt considerably stronger, and his body felt so much lighter. His vision also cleared up, and so did the rest of his senses. It was as if some sort of wall that was limiting him had been broken, and the world felt completely different around him.
'5 points in each stat is a lot… I feel so much stronger. It's like my body is evolving.' He mused as he clenched his fist. 'And I gained a new skill. I will check it later when I reach my destination.'
Nodding his head, Rein closed the panel as he was ready to start moving again. However, at that moment, he suddenly heard a noise above his head. Looking up, Rein saw a fighter jet flying above at immense speeds, almost breaking the sound barrier.
His eyes watched it for a second before they widened as he realized what was about to happen.
A projectile suddenly lunched from the front part of the jet as it flew down at immense speeds… Directly toward Rein.
'You have got to be kidding me.' Rein clenched his teeth as he dashed to the side as fast as he could. 'This is bad! This is really bad!'
*BOOOOOOOOM*
A split second later, the missile hit its target as a large explosion sent a shockwave in every direction. Rein's body was pushed forward as he fell down, rolling several times as debris and rocks flew everywhere.
"Fuck…" Rein cursed as he pushed himself off the ground. "There are people here, goddamit."
He stared at the spot where the missile had landed and the large cloud of dust that rose from there. The sound of cries echoed in the distance
"..."
Rein was simply speechless. 'They're already throwing missiles on civilians' heads.'
That was just bone-chilling, but at the same time, it made Rein realize how truly hopeless the situation was for the military to take such a drastic measure. He didn't need to see the rest of the city to know that the government had lost everything and they're getting really desperate.
*BOOOOOOM*
At the same time, he heard another loud explosion in the far distance, and then another one. Fighting jets flew above his head like birds, dropping bombs everywhere as they started destroying the entire city.
"I need to get moving before they drop one on my head. Goddamit." He cursed as he started running again. This situation wasn't completely unexpected, but he certainly didn't anticipate it happening so soon.
It hadn't even been an hour since all of this started, and yet they were already dropping bombs to completely wipe this city off the face of the earth. On the way, Rein had to stop to kill several Undead who crossed his path.
However, with his stronger body, his speed and strength were on another level. He sliced through them with immense ease, not even wasting a single moment.
'I'm not even feeling any resistance in my arm as I cut them anymore.' He thought to himself. 'My strength is now 2.5x that of an average human. Very neat.'
Rein could only wonder what getting 10x the strength of a normal human would feel like. 'I can become a superhuman in every sense of the word.'
Channeling his energy, Rein decided to try and use his Gravity Manipulation on his feet to make them lighter.
Slowly, the purple halo formed around them as his speed increased visibly. Rein felt like he was starting to float.
'This ability uses a lot of Life Essence, so I can't use it recklessly. But, this is amazing.' He looked ahead as he felt himself storming through the street like a phantom. Passing by the Undead, the civilians who somehow survived, and everyone else. He approached his destination.
Meanwhile, the destruction continued intensifying around him. Rein tried to maneuver through the paths, guessing where the fighter jets would attack.
'They will aim for clusters of Undead rather than-'
Before he could even finish that sentence, Rein suddenly heard a screech above his head. Stopping, he looked up as his eyes widened. Above his head, one of the fighter jets was about to fly off after dropping missiles, only for something to suddenly appear out of thin air.
*Swish*
A large bird, almost as large as the jet itself, manifested out of the clouds as it flew toward it at ridiculous speeds.
Then…
*BOOOOM*
The creature slammed into the side of the jet violently, its claws sinking into the metal. Rein couldn't even believe his eyes as the creature screeched and pushed the jet down.
The aircraft spiraled out of control as it descended to the ground before exploding violently. However, the pilot was able to eject himself in time as his silhouette flew in the air.
Before, he could deploy his parachute; however, the bird flew up to him as it caught him with its claws. Then, with a simple gesture, it threw him up and caught him with its mouth. The man cried and struggled before he was swallowed whole in a second.
"..." Rein's mouth was parted open in sheer shock at what he saw. It looked like a sight straight out of a documentary about ancient life and dinosaurs. Something so unrealistic, he forgot that it was real for a fleeting moment.
The creature shrieked as it started flying away. However, before it could disappear, its eyes suddenly turned around and locked on Rein.
"Fuck off." He muttered under his breath as he realized what that look meant. The bird suddenly shifted direction as it started flying down toward him.
Rein quickly turned around and ran toward the closest building. The monster was so fast that he didn't even have a second to spare.
'Shit, it might catch me.' With no other option, he jumped through the glass window, breaking it with his body as he rolled inside.
*BANG*
A split second later, the monster's claws slammed into the building, piercing through the concrete as it tried to catch him.
The claws were so large, they almost reached him. Rein quickly rolled out of the way as he looked up.
*CRACK* *CRACK*
The claws were shattering the concrete with ease.
"I'm not on today's menu." He said sarcastically with a dark look on his face. 'This thing has definitely not mutated an hour ago. That size and strength alone tells me it has been hunting things for fun for a while now.'
*CRACK*
'Anyway! I need to get the hell out of here before it-'
*CRACK*
At the last moment, the wall collapsed, and a large, gaping hole appeared in it. The monster quickly landed on its feet and shoved its head inside.
"That."
The large head of what seemed to be an eagle looked at him. Its eyes were terrifying, to say the least. Its beak was so sharp, it looked like a blade. Opening it, tried to catch Rein, who quickly dodged back.
With each move, the monster's head destroyed more and more of the building as it moved left and right, trying to reach deeper inside. Meanwhile, Rein ran from one room to another, trying to escape this monstrosity.
The ceiling above his head was starting to crack violently.
'It will make this building collapse.'
With no other choice, Rein jumped out of the building on the other side as he continued running.
'I can't lose it. If that is indeed a mutated bald eagle, then it will see me no matter where I run. But, how do I even kill it?' Clenching his teeth, Rein suddenly stopped as he looked behind him.
An idea formed in his head. An idea so devious, even he could only smile darkly at it.
'Surely this is going to kill me… right?'
