Chapter 20 - First Days in Seoul

The apartment was small, far from the grandeur of the mansion, but it was hers. Seo Yoon unpacked her suitcase slowly, carefully arranging her belongings. Every object she placed felt like a statement: This space belongs to me. This life belongs to me.

The city hummed outside her window, a constant rhythm of cars, footsteps, and distant voices. Seoul was alive, chaotic, and intimidating—but to Seo Yoon, it felt full of possibility.

She enrolled in her new school the next day, walking through the crowded hallways with a quiet confidence she had never known. No one knew her past, no one knew her pain. Here, she could be herself—just Seo Yoon, without the weight of expectations, abuse, or fear.

Classmates were curious, some friendly, others indifferent. Seo Yoon observed quietly at first, learning the rhythm of her new environment. She smiled politely, answered questions thoughtfully, and gradually, small connections began to form. A nod here, a shared laugh there—it was ordinary, mundane, and yet profoundly freeing.

In the evenings, she explored the city streets, discovering quiet cafés, parks tucked between tall buildings, and bookstores with corners full of hidden treasures. Each small adventure reminded her how vast the world was, how many choices she had never been allowed.

Yet, despite the freedom, there were moments of loneliness. Nights when the silence pressed in, and memories of home tried to creep back. But instead of fear, Seo Yoon felt resolve. She wrote in her journal, sketched in the margins of her notebooks, and whispered to herself: This is my life. I am in control. I am free.

Even her first trip to the grocery store felt like an act of independence. Choosing her own food, paying with her own money, carrying her own bags—mundane tasks that felt monumental after years of control. Every step reminded her that she no longer needed anyone's permission to exist or to thrive.

By the end of the week, Seo Yoon felt a subtle shift within herself. Fear and sadness still lingered, shadows from her past, but they no longer dictated her every move. For the first time, she could feel the possibility of joy, choice, and growth stretching before her like the streets of Seoul—endless, alive, and hers to navigate.

Seo Yoon smiled quietly, a small, determined smile. She had survived her past. She had claimed her freedom. And now, for the first time, she was beginning to truly live.
