Chapter 6 - Heukseong

Heukseong was a city of steel and water. The harbor stretched for miles along the coast. Cranes stood like skeletal giants against the gray sky. Ships docked in the distance. They unloaded containers marked with false labels. The sea air smelled of salt and rust. It smelled of money. Dante watched from the hillside. The van was parked in the shadows of an old warehouse. The engine was off. The silence was heavy. Isaac sat in the front seat. Three monitors glowed on the dashboard. They cast a blue light on his face. He typed continuously. The data streams were complex. They showed money flows. They showed ship manifests. They showed hidden accounts. This city was a financial artery for organized crime. Every transaction left a trace. Isaac found the traces.

Isaac said, "This city is an artery."

Dante said, "For what."

Isaac said, "For everything. Drugs. Weapons. Information. Money."

Dante said, "And the broker."

Isaac said, "He is at the port. Sector four. Abandoned warehouse."

Dante looked through the binoculars. The port was below. It was rusted. It was dead. But there were lights inside the warehouse. They flickered through the broken windows. Movement was visible. Shadows walked across the walls. The perimeter was guarded. Men paced with rifles. Cameras swept the grounds.

Kairo said, "There are twelve hostiles."

Dante said, "Confirm."

Kairo said, "Twelve. Armed. Heavy weaponry."

Mūn said, "And one more. The broker."

Dante said, "Lisa is ready."

Eikichi spoke from the back seat. He was cleaning a rifle. The parts lay on a cloth. He assembled them with practiced ease. He did not look up. His movements were economical. He wasted no energy. He was the defense. He was the wall.

Eikichi said, "She goes in alone."

Dante said, "Yes."

Eikichi said, "It is risky."

Dante said, "It is necessary."

Eikichi said, "If she is compromised."

Dante said, "She will not be."

Eikichi finished the rifle. He clicked the bolt into place. He looked at Dante. The eyes were hard. They were skeptical. He had seen Dante take risks before. But this felt different. This felt personal.

Eikichi said, "You are taking chances."

Dante said, "I am calculating odds."

Eikichi said, "The odds are bad."

Dante said, "They are manageable."

Kisuke leaned against the van door. He smoked a cigarette. The smoke drifted into the night air. It vanished in the wind. He watched the port. He watched the guards patrol the perimeter. He tapped the ash on the ground.

Kisuke said, "Two guards at the north gate."

Dante said, "Lisa will avoid them."

Kisuke said, "There are cameras."

Dante said, "Loop them."

Kisuke said, "Already done."

Dante checked his watch. The time was 02:00 a.m. The verification clock was still ticking. Thirty-six hours remained. He needed the client's name. He needed it now. The broker was the key. The broker held the chain. If the chain broke, the client fell.

Dante said, "Lisa. Status."

Lisa's voice came through the earpiece. It was clear. It was calm. It showed no fear.

Lisa said, "In position. North wall."

Dante said, "Proceed."

Lisa said, "Moving."

Dante watched through the thermal scope. A heat signature moved along the wall. It was small. It was fast. It stopped at the fence. It cut the wire. It slipped through. She was inside the perimeter. She was invisible.

Kairo said, "She is inside."

Dante said, "Monitor the feed."

Isaac said, "Camera three is live."

The screen showed the interior. It was dusty. Crates were stacked high. They formed corridors. Men stood in a circle. They wore suits. They wore masks. The broker sat at the head. He wore a white mask. It was smooth. It had no features. It was blank.

Dante said, "Zoom in."

Isaac said, "Doing it."

The image sharpened. The broker held a tablet. He scrolled through data. He stopped on a page. He showed it to the men. They nodded. They reached for their weapons. The atmosphere shifted. It became dangerous.

Mūn said, "They are preparing."

Dante said, "For what."

Mūn said, "For a betrayal."

Dante tightened his grip on the scope. The metal was cold. The wind picked up. It carried the scent of salt and oil. It smelled of decay. The city breathed around them. It was alive with crime. Rival operations watched from the shadows. Everyone was hunting.

Isaac said, "Audio feed is active."

Voices came through the speaker. They were distorted. They were encrypted. But Isaac cracked the layer. The words became clear. The voices were mechanical.

Broker said, "The target is confirmed dead."

Man One said, "Proof."

Broker said, "It is being verified."

Man Two said, "If it is fake."

Broker said, "Then we clean the mess."

Dante stiffened. The words hung in the air. They were talking about Sophie. They were talking about the lie. The verification was the trigger. If it failed, the cleanup began. The cleanup meant death. The stakes had just risen.

Kairo said, "They know."

Dante said, "They suspect."

Kairo said, "Suspicion is enough."

Lisa said, "I am moving closer."

Dante said, "Hold position."

Lisa said, "I need the device."

Dante said, "Wait for the signal."

Lisa said, "There is no time."

Dante said, "I give the orders."

Lisa said, "You are too far away."

Dante said, "Lisa."

Lisa said, "I am going in."

The line went static. Dante lowered the headset. He looked at the screen. Lisa's heat signature moved toward the circle. She was invisible to them. She used stealth tech. She was a ghost. But ghosts could be caught.

Eikichi said, "She is disobeying."

Dante said, "She is adapting."

Eikichi said, "She is exposed."

Dante said, "Cover her."

Eikichi picked up the rifle. He looked through the scope. He found the guards. He found the cameras. He found the escape routes. He waited for the command. His finger rested on the trigger.

Kisuke said, "I am ready."

Dante said, "Stand by."

The tension in the van was palpable. It pressed against the walls. It filled the lungs. Dante watched the screen. Lisa reached the edge of the circle. She crouched behind a crate. She reached for her bag. She pulled out a jammer.

Broker said, "Who is there."

The men turned. They raised their weapons. They scanned the shadows. They did not see her. She was still. She was breathing slowly. She controlled her heart rate. But the broker knew.

Lisa said, "Compromised."

Dante said, "Extract."

Lisa said, "Too late."

The broker pointed. He pointed directly at her crate. He knew. He had known all along. It was a trap. The meeting was not for business. It was for bait. They wanted the team. They wanted Dante.

Dante said, "Now."

Eikichi fired. The shot was silent. The guard fell. The chaos began. Guns erupted. Sparks flew from the crates. Bullets chewed the wood. Lisa moved. She rolled out of cover. She fired back. Her shots were precise.

Dante said, "Get her out."

Kisuke said, "Moving."

Dante opened the van door. He stepped into the night. The air was cold. The city lights flickered. The port was alive with violence. He walked toward the warehouse. He did not run. He did not hide. He was the reinforcement.

Kairo said, "You are exposing yourself."

Dante said, "She is my team."

Mūn said, "They are waiting for you."

Dante said, "Let them wait."

He checked his weapon. He loaded the magazine. He racked the slide. The sound was loud in the silence. He stepped into the light. The warehouse doors were open. The firefight was inside. He entered the shadows. He became part of them. The verification clock ticked in his mind. Thirty-five hours. The broker was dead or alive. It did not matter. The client was still out there. The client was still watching. Dante walked into the fire. He was the hunter. He was the prey. He was both.
