Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Early spring light filtered through the tall windows of the Lin Empire's main hall, casting pale lines across polished floors. The banners of the Lin Empire, black with golden dragons, swayed silently in the faint breeze, carrying the weight of centuries.

Seated atop the raised dais, the Emperor's presence filled the room—not harsh, cruel—but commanding. Every word he spoke carried the authority of the realm.

At the far end of the hall, Lin Yechen, Crown Prince of the Lin Empire, stood perfectly still. Dark robes falling in clean lines, hands behind his back, eyes sharp and unreadable. He did not flinch. He did not bow until the moment demanded.

In a corner, the Empress Dowager, his grandmother, observed silently. Her gaze was calm, calculating. She had seen her grandson's temper flare before, had seen the shadow that lingered in his eyes. Today, she would watch closely.

"Yechen," the Emperor began, voice steady and even,

"You have grown into a capable Crown Prince. But the Yu Empire… threatens peace, as always.

The Yu Empire's Crown Princess –Shayue—I have decided – you will marry her."

A ripple passed through the court. Courtiers shifted nervously.

The Emperor paused briefly, then added—

"She has already agreed to this marriage."

For the first time—

A flicker.

Small. Almost invisible.

But I was there.

She agreed?

The thought cut through his calm like a blade.

"A princess of the Yu Empire… agreeing so easily? Either she is weak… or far more dangerous than they believe."

His expression did not change.

But something in his gaze darkened—

sharpened.

Interest.

"Peace… yes, of course. Just as my younger brother died on the battlefield because of Father's orders, the strategies he trusted… the lives lost… all because of obedience. And now I am commanded again."

A dark knot of resentment burned in his chest. He would obey—he must—but his heart would not forgive.

From the corner, the Empress Dowager's eyes never left him.

A faint sigh escaped her lips.

"So… this princess has caught your attention already," she thought quietly.

At last, he inclined his head once, formally.

"As you wish, Father," he said voice low and steady.

No warmth. No respect. Only duty.

His words echoed through the hall—a son obeying, yet detached, distant, unreadable.

The Emperor's eyes softened slightly, unaware of the storm behind his son's calm gaze.

Lin Yechen's dark eyes lowered slightly, lost in thought.

"She agreed…"

A faint smile touched his lips—this time deeper, darker.

Not disinterest anymore.

Curiosity.

Dangerous curiosity.

He turned slightly, voice calm—yet carrying something far sharper beneath it.

"Prepare the court. The Yu Empire's princess will be received with full protocol."

A pause.

His lips curved into a slow, cold smile.

"I am looking forward to meeting the spoiled princess of the Yu Empire."

The Empress Dowager's gaze sharpened slightly.

She recognized that smile.

That was not interest.

That was the beginning of a game.

And somewhere far beyond the borders—

The woman he underestimated…

Was already preparing to shatter every expectation he had.

To be continued...
