Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 — The First Stand

The door didn't burst open this time.

It opened slowly.

Deliberately.

Like whoever stood on the other side wanted Arin to feel it.

Every second of it.

The metal edges scraped against the floor with a deep, grinding sound that echoed through the chamber. The warm glow of the room dimmed slightly as shadows stretched inward, crawling across the ground like something alive.

Arin didn't move.

Not backward.

Not forward.

He just stood there, his eyes fixed on the opening doorway.

"…Here we go again," he muttered.

Maya stepped beside him, weapon raised, her posture steady but tense.

"Stay focused," she said.

Arin nodded slightly.

"For once… I am."

The golden light around him shimmered faintly, calm but present. It didn't flare wildly like before. It didn't pulse uncontrollably.

It waited.

Just like him.

The door opened fully.

Dark figures stepped in.

Kraven's hunters.

But something was different.

They didn't rush.

They didn't fire immediately.

They spread out slowly, surrounding the entrance, their glowing visors scanning the chamber.

As if they were… cautious.

Arin noticed.

"…Why do they look nervous?" he whispered.

Maya's eyes narrowed.

"Because of you."

Arin blinked.

"…That's new."

The hunters stopped moving.

Then—

A figure stepped forward from behind them.

Not Kraven.

Someone else.

Taller.

Broader.

Wearing heavier armor.

His presence alone felt… different.

More dangerous.

Arin frowned.

"…Okay, who's this guy?"

Maya's voice dropped slightly.

"…That's not one of the regular units."

"Yeah, I figured that part out."

The armored figure removed his helmet slowly.

Revealing a scarred face.

Cold eyes.

A faint smirk.

"Well," the man said, his voice deep and rough, "you're not as weak as they said."

Arin crossed his arms.

"Wow, thanks. That almost sounded like a compliment."

The man chuckled.

"I don't give compliments."

"Yeah, I can tell."

Maya stepped slightly in front of Arin.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at her briefly.

Then back at Arin.

"I'm the one they send when things stop working."

Arin tilted his head.

"…That's not a name."

The man smirked slightly.

"You can call me Raze."

Arin sighed.

"Of course your name is Raze. That sounds exactly like someone who causes problems."

Raze's smirk widened just a little.

"I do."

The air in the chamber shifted.

Tension building.

Arin could feel it.

But this time—

He didn't feel like running.

Raze stepped forward slowly.

His boots echoed heavily against the floor.

"You've been causing a lot of trouble," he said.

Arin shrugged.

"Yeah, I get that a lot lately."

Raze stopped a few meters away.

His eyes scanned Arin carefully.

"You're not trained."

"Nope."

"You don't understand your power."

"Also correct."

Raze tilted his head slightly.

"…And yet you're still standing."

Arin smirked faintly.

"Yeah. Funny how that works."

For a moment—

Raze's expression shifted.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Something else.

Interest.

"Good," he said.

Arin blinked.

"…Good?"

Raze nodded slightly.

"I prefer a challenge."

Arin sighed.

"Yeah, I had a feeling you'd say something like that."

Maya tightened her grip on her weapon.

"We're not here to fight."

Raze glanced at her briefly.

Then back at Arin.

"That's not your choice."

Arin stepped forward slightly.

"It kind of is."

The golden light around him flared softly.

Not aggressive.

But ready.

Raze's eyes flickered toward it.

"…So it's true."

Arin frowned.

"What is?"

Raze smirked.

"You really are the next one."

Arin rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, yeah, I've heard that already."

Raze's expression hardened slightly.

"Then you know what that means."

Arin's voice dropped.

"Yeah."

Silence.

Then—

Raze moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

One second he was standing still—

The next—

He was right in front of Arin.

Maya reacted instantly, firing her weapon.

The blast hit—

But Raze didn't stop.

He moved through it.

Barely slowed.

Arin's eyes widened.

"…Oh shit—!"

Raze swung.

Arin barely reacted in time.

The golden light burst outward—

Blocking the attack.

The impact echoed loudly through the chamber.

Arin was pushed back several steps.

"…Okay," he said, shaking his arm. "That hurt."

Raze stepped forward again.

Unfazed.

"Good reflex," he said.

Arin raised his hands slightly.

"Yeah, I'm full of surprises."

Raze attacked again.

This time faster.

Stronger.

Arin focused.

Not on panic.

Not on fear.

On control.

The golden light responded instantly.

He blocked again—

Then pushed forward.

A burst of energy forced Raze back slightly.

Raze's boots scraped against the ground.

He stopped.

Looked at Arin.

And smiled.

"…Now this is interesting."

Maya fired again, trying to support Arin.

But Raze dodged easily.

His attention stayed locked on Arin.

"You're adapting," he said.

Arin smirked.

"Yeah. That's kind of my thing now."

Raze lunged again.

Arin moved.

Not perfectly.

Not smoothly.

But better.

He dodged.

Countered.

The golden light followed his movements.

Not wild.

Not chaotic.

Controlled.

Focused.

The chamber filled with flashes of gold and bursts of energy as they clashed.

Each hit echoed.

Each movement sharper than the last.

Arin's breathing grew heavier.

But he didn't stop.

Didn't run.

For the first time—

He stood his ground.

Raze attacked again—

Arin blocked—

Then pushed back harder.

The golden light surged—

Stronger than before.

Raze was forced back several steps this time.

He stopped.

Lowered his stance slightly.

"…You're learning faster than expected."

Arin wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Yeah, I get that a lot."

Raze laughed.

A short, rough sound.

"I like you."

Arin blinked.

"…That's weird. Please don't say that again."

Raze's smile widened.

"Too bad."

The hunters behind him shifted slightly.

Waiting.

Watching.

But not interfering.

This wasn't their fight.

This was something else.

Something personal.

Raze stepped forward again.

Slower this time.

Measured.

"You're not strong enough yet," he said.

Arin frowned.

"…And?"

Raze's eyes sharpened.

"But you will be."

Before Arin could react—

Raze suddenly stopped.

Completely.

The tension broke.

Just like that.

Arin blinked.

"…What?"

Raze straightened slightly.

Then turned away.

"We're done here."

Arin stared.

"…Excuse me?"

Maya frowned.

"What do you mean 'done'?"

Raze looked over his shoulder.

"At this level… killing you would be pointless."

Arin crossed his arms.

"Wow. That's insulting."

Raze smirked slightly.

"No."

He paused.

"It's strategic."

Arin's expression hardened.

"…You're just going to walk away?"

"Yes."

Raze began walking back toward the door.

The hunters followed.

Arin took a step forward.

"Why?"

Raze stopped at the entrance.

Without turning around, he said—

"Because next time…"

He paused.

"…I want to see what you become."

Then he walked out.

The door closed behind him.

Silence filled the chamber again.

Arin stood there, breathing heavily.

"…What the hell just happened?"

Maya lowered her weapon slowly.

"…He was testing you."

Arin frowned.

"…That's not reassuring."

He looked at his hands.

The golden light still glowed.

Steady.

Controlled.

Stronger than before.

"…I didn't lose control," he said quietly.

Maya nodded.

"No."

Arin let out a slow breath.

"…I actually fought back."

"Yes."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"…Okay. That felt kind of awesome."

Maya gave him a look.

"Don't get overconfident."

Arin laughed slightly.

"Yeah, yeah. I know."

But inside—

Something had changed.

He wasn't just reacting anymore.

He wasn't just surviving.

He was fighting.

Growing.

Becoming.

And somewhere far away—

Kraven watched everything.

His expression calm.

Interested.

"Good," he said quietly.

"Let him grow."

And the chapter ends with Arin realizing…

The enemy isn't trying to stop him anymore.

They're preparing him for something far worse.
