Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: The Distance That Felt Closer

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Machines hummed softly.

Man Ning lay still.

Unconscious.

But breathing.

Steady.

Shen Yan stood beside her.

Not moving.

Not speaking.

His eyes—

Fixed on her.

As if looking away would change something.

The doctor stepped back.

"She's stable now," he said.

Shen Yan didn't respond immediately.

"…Will she wake up?" he asked.

"Yes. She just needs rest."

A pause.

"And stress less."

Shen Yan gave a faint, almost invisible reaction.

Stress less.

He looked at her again.

As if that word didn't belong to her.

The doctor left.

The room returned to silence.

Minutes passed.

But Shen Yan didn't leave.

He pulled a chair closer.

Sat down.

Still watching her.

"…You're always like this," he said quietly.

No answer.

"Strong… even when you shouldn't be."

His voice was low.

Almost unfamiliar.

He looked at his hand.

The same hand that held her.

That touched her.

That moment—

Came back.

That breath.

That closeness.

That feeling.

His expression tightened slightly.

"…What are you doing to me…" he whispered.

As if asking her.

Or himself.

Hours later—

A small movement.

Her fingers twitched.

Shen Yan noticed immediately.

"Man Ning?" he leaned forward.

Her eyes slowly opened.

Blurred.

Confused.

"…Where…" she whispered.

"You're safe," he said.

His voice softer than usual.

She blinked slowly.

Her vision cleared.

And then—

She saw him.

So close.

Too close.

She tried to sit up.

But felt weak.

"Don't move," he said quickly.

She stopped.

A pause.

Then—

"What happened?" she asked.

"You fainted," he replied.

Simple.

But not complete.

Man Ning frowned slightly.

"I don't faint."

Shen Yan almost smiled.

"…You did."

Silence.

She looked away.

Trying to understand.

Then—

A strange feeling.

Her heart beat slightly faster.

"…Did something happen…" she asked quietly.

Shen Yan froze for a second.

That moment again.

That kiss.

That closeness.

He looked at her.

"…No," he said.

Calm.

Controlled.

But not completely true.

Man Ning didn't question further.

But something—

Felt missing.

Unclear.

Then—

"Why am I here?" she asked.

"You were brought here," he replied.

"You?" she asked.

A small pause.

"…Yes."

Silence.

For a moment—

Their eyes met again.

That same feeling.

Closer now.

Stronger.

Unavoidable.

Man Ning looked away first.

"…Thank you," she said quietly.

Shen Yan didn't reply immediately.

Then—

"…Rest," he said.

His voice softer.

Less cold.

She nodded slightly.

Closing her eyes again.

But this time—

Not unconscious.

Just tired.

Shen Yan stood up.

Walked a few steps.

Then stopped.

He turned back.

Looked at her once more.

"…This isn't over," he said quietly.

Not to her.

To himself.

Outside—

Minji stood near the door.

She had heard enough.

Seen enough.

"…Why does it feel like everything is connected…" she whispered.

Her heart felt uneasy again.

Heavy.

As if something—

Was about to be revealed.

Inside the room—

Man Ning's fingers moved slightly.

As if holding onto something invisible.

A feeling.

A moment.

She didn't understand.

But didn't want to lose.

👉 Sometimes distance creates walls.

👉 But one moment… can bring two people closer than ever.
