Chapter 99 - When the Line is Crossed

When the Line is Crossed

Some men walked away when the system turned against them.

Others…

Dug deeper.

Adrian Cole was the second kind.

They took his badge.

His access.

His case.

But they didn't take his mind.

And they definitely didn't take his resolve.

If anything…

They made it worse.

Because now—

He had nothing left to lose.

Cole sat alone in his apartment, the room dim, lit only by a single desk lamp.

Files were scattered everywhere.

Photos.

Names.

Connections.

Everything he had managed to save before they wiped him out of the system.

He wasn't working as a detective anymore.

Not officially.

But that didn't matter.

Because this was no longer about the job.

This was about the truth.

His eyes moved across the board he had recreated on his wall.

At the center—

REYES.

Still there.

Still untouched.

Still waiting.

Cole leaned back slightly, exhaling slowly.

"You made a mistake," he muttered under his breath.

Because Damian had shown himself.

Stepped out of the shadows.

Made it personal.

And once something became personal—

It became traceable.

Cole reached for his phone, dialing a number he hadn't used in a long time.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then—

"Cole?"

A familiar voice.

Old partner.

Trusted.

"I need a favor," Cole said quietly.

A pause.

"…This about the case they pulled you from?"

Cole's eyes hardened.

"Yeah."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Then—

"You never let things go, do you?"

"No."

A sigh came through the line.

"…Alright. What do you need?"

High above the city, Damian stood still.

Too still.

The kind of stillness that meant something had already shifted.

He didn't need reports.

Didn't need confirmation.

He felt it.

Cole hadn't stopped.

He had gone deeper.

Off the grid.

That made him dangerous.

But more than that—

It made him predictable.

"Find him," Damian said quietly.

One of his men nodded immediately. "We're already on it."

Damian's gaze remained fixed on the city.

"And the people around him?"

A pause.

"They're being watched."

That was all he needed to hear.

Because every man had a weakness.

Every man had a line.

And Damian didn't need to guess where Cole's was.

He just needed to press hard enough…

To find it.

Night came again.

Cold.

Silent.

Unforgiving.

Cole stepped out of a small café, his mind focused, his pace steady.

He had something now.

Not everything.

But enough.

Enough to get closer.

Enough to make this real.

He pulled his jacket tighter as he walked, his phone buzzing in his pocket.

He checked it.

A message.

From his old partner.

"We need to talk. Urgent."

Cole frowned slightly.

That wasn't like him.

Too direct.

Too rushed.

Still…

He turned the corner, heading toward the meeting point.

A quiet street.

Dimly lit.

Empty.

Wrong.

The moment he stepped into it—

He knew.

Too late.

A car engine roared to life behind him.

Fast.

Aggressive.

Cole turned sharply—

Headlights blinded him.

No time to move.

No time to react.

Just impact.

Violent.

Unforgiving.

Final.

Silence returned.

The street empty once again.

Like nothing had happened.

Like no life had just been erased.

From a distance, inside a parked car, Damian watched.

Calm.

Unmoved.

His expression didn't change.

Not even slightly.

Because this wasn't anger.

This wasn't revenge.

This was…

Correction.

A problem that refused to break—

Removed.

His phone buzzed once.

A simple message:

"It's done."

Damian glanced at it briefly… then locked his screen.

"That's what happens," he murmured softly, his voice void of emotion, "when you cross a line you don't understand."

His gaze lingered on the empty street for a moment longer.

Not out of regret.

But acknowledgment.

Adrian Cole had been rare.

Strong.

Unyielding.

But in the end…

He was still human.

And humans…

Always fell.

Damian leaned back slightly, the city lights reflecting in his dark eyes once more.

The game was over.

The board was his again.

Completely.

Utterly.

Untouchable.

And somewhere in the silence…

The Devil moved on…

Like nothing had ever stood in his way.
