Chapter 22 - Breaking Point

The school courtyard buzzed with its usual noise, voices rising and falling in waves as students drifted between conversations, laughter, and small arguments that meant everything in the moment. To most, it was just another day but to Kim Hyun-Jae, it felt like something else entirely.

He stood near the back building, away from the crowd, his bag slung over one shoulder. His posture looked relaxed, but there was a stillness to him that hadn't been there weeks ago. His breathing was steady and controlled, quietly scanning the area around him. The noise of the courtyard didn't distract him. If anything, it sharpened his awareness.

He already knew they were coming and soon after...

Footsteps, then voices.

Hyun-Jae didn't turn immediately. He already knew who it was.

Four boys approached, spreading out just enough to block off the open space behind him. They carried themselves the same way they always had, like they owned whatever ground they stood on. For months, they had made his life difficult in small, persistent ways. Never enough to draw real attention, but always enough to wear him down.

"Well, well… if it isn't the wannabe martial artist," one of them said, his tone dripping with amusement. "Heard you've been skipping school to play fighter."

Another cracked his knuckles, stepping closer. "What? You gonna float away or something? Thought you were training or whatever."

Laughter followed, loud and sharp.

Hyun-Jae remained still.

His fingers twitched once at his side.

Tae-Hyuk's voice echoed in his mind. "Don't let emotions guide your movement."

His jaw tightened.

Then another thought slipped in "…but that doesn't mean I can't fight back."

"What was that?" one of them snapped, noticing the change in his expression.

The first punch came without warning, Fast and direct. The kind of strike meant to overwhelm before a reaction could form.

But Hyun-Jae had already moved.

His body shifted a fraction to the side, not a dramatic dodge but enough to let the fist pass him. It was instinct now, drilled into him through repetition.. step, turn, breathe. The movement wasn't perfect, but it was efficient.

The attacker's fist cut through empty air.

For a split second, confusion replaced confidence and that was all Hyun-Jae needed.

He pivoted, his weight transferring through his hips into his arm. His fist drove forward, landing a punch into the boy's stomach with a dull, solid impact. The sound wasn't loud, but the effect was immediate. The boy's body folded inward, the air leaving his lungs in a broken gasp as he stumbled back, collapsing to his knees.

Silence fell.

Not complete silence, but enough for the moment to stretch.

Then it shattered.

"GET HIM!"

The other three rushed him at once.

Hyun-Jae's heart pounded, but his body didn't freeze.

The first came from the left, swinging wide. Hyun-Jae stepped back, then forward again, closing the distance before the strike could recover. His shoulder drove into the attacker's chest, throwing him off balance. A quick follow-up strike landed awkwardly against the boy's ribs, not clean, but strong enough to make him stagger.

The second attacker grabbed for him, aiming to lock him down. Hyun-Jae reacted late, the grip catching his sleeve, pulling him off-center. Panic flickered for a moment, but he remembered...

He twisted sharply, dropping his weight instead of resisting directly. The motion broke the grip just enough. He drove his elbow backward, striking blindly. It connected with something solid, a shoulder or maybe a jaw, all he knew was that the hold loosened completely.

He turned, breathing harder now.

The third attacker came straight at him, faster than the others, anger replacing whatever caution he might have had. His fist aimed for Hyun-Jae's face this time.

Hyun-Jae saw it but was too slow to fully dodge so he blocked.

The impact jarred his arm, pain shooting up to his shoulder, but he held his ground. Before the attacker could pull back, Hyun-Jae stepped in, shortening the distance. His next strike wasn't precise, but it was close enough. His fist connected with the boy's chest, forcing him back.

Everything blurred after that.

Movement stacked on movement, each action driven more by instinct than thought. Hyun-Jae didn't have the refinement of a trained martial artist, but he had something else, momentum, repetition, and the beginnings of control.

He didn't stop moving.

Step. Turn. Strike.

Breathe.

One of them tried to rush him again, but Hyun-Jae sidestepped and shoved him hard, sending him crashing into the wall. Another swung wildly, frustration making his movements sloppy. Hyun-Jae ducked under it, his counter landing against the side of the boy's body.

It wasn't elegant but it worked.

One by one, they fell back.

Not defeated in the way of a clean fight, but broken in rhythm, unable to coordinate and their confidence lost under the pressure.

Within moments, it was over.

All four were on the ground in some form, groaning, clutching their sides, struggling to understand what had just happened.

Hyun-Jae stood in the center, his breathing uneven, his arms trembling slightly. The adrenaline surged through him, making everything feel sharper and heavier at the same time.

For the first time in months, Hyun-Jae retaliated.

Soon after, teachers arrived at the scene and the four were taken to the infirmary while Hyun-Jae was sent to the principal's office.

The principal's office later that day carried a completely different atmosphere. The noise of the courtyard was gone, replaced by a controlled silence that made every word feel heavier than it should. Hyun-Jae sat stiffly in his chair, the earlier fight still lingering in his body. Across from him stood his mother, her expression tight, her frustration clear even without her speaking.

Principal Kang Min-Seok sat behind his desk. He listened to the teacher that brother Hyun-Jae to his office. The report was simple on the surface, a fight involving multiple students, injuries sustained, responsibility unclear.

"Mrs. Kim," Principal Kang eventually spoke, "I hope you've heard what your son did today, I personally called you three days ago, that your son has been skipping school, and whenever he's at school, he's mostly sleeping or lost in thought, but this... this is just not acceptable"

Her face hardened instantly. "I'm really sorry principal Kang, I sincerely apologize for his behavior, I will make sure it doesn't happen again."

Hyun-Jae clenched his fist. "But they started it."

"Be quiet!" she snapped.

Principal Kang raised his hand gently. "No… let him speak."

The room fell silent.

Hyun-Jae hesitated, then spoke. "…They've been bullying me for months."

His mother froze.

"They take my things… push me around… call me names… sometimes beat me to pulp." His voice tightened. "and they tried again today."

Principal Kang leaned back slightly. "Well... we've had reports of students being bullied but because no one has pointed out the bullies we didn't know who to punish, that is until today."

His mother's expression slowly changed. From anger, to confusion, to guilt. "…Why didn't you tell me?"she asked quietly.

Hyun-Jae looked away. "…You were always busy."

That hit harder than anything else.

She exhaled slowly, her shoulders lowering.

Principal Kang continued speaking. " while violence is not the correct solution... your son was, in this case defending himself."

The conclusion was clear, even if it didn't resolve everything.

Hyun-Jae had defended himself.

When they stepped out of the office, the tension followed them, but it didn't break the way Hyun-Jae expected. He braced for anger, for the familiar reaction he had known for so long.

But instead, his mother exhaled slowly, her voice quieter, less certain. "You should have told me," she said.

"I didn't think you'd listen."

A pause followed.

"…You were wrong," she said after a moment. Then, more quietly, "…but I was too."

It wasn't an apology in the usual sense, but it carried the same weight.

"…If what that principal said is true… then you didn't do anything wrong today." she continued.

Hyun-Jae's eyes widened slightly. "…Really?"

She exhaled. "Don't misunderstand. I don't approve of fighting.… but I understand why you did it."

For the first time, relief showed on his face.

Then she added. "…You can still go to that shop"

He froze. "…Huh?"

"I'm not saying I approve of everything happening there," she said quickly. "But… you seem calmer when you're around those people."

Her voice lowered slightly.

"…Especially that Tae-Hyuk or whatever his name is."

Hyun-Jae blinked repeatedly. "Wait… is this real?"

Back in the office, after they had left, the silence returned. Principal Kang remained seated, his posture unchanged, but something in his expression shifted. The warmth faded, replaced by something colder, more focused. He reached into his drawer, pulling out a small phone.

The message he typed was brief and precise, but carried more weight than its length suggested.

He paused only once before sending it.

Then the screen went dark.

"…Interesting," he murmured to himself, while a faint smile formed on his face.
