Chapter 7: The Path Beyond Blood

The claw fell.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

For a fraction of a second—

my body didn't move.

Then—

it did.

A step.

Just enough.

The claw crushed the ground beside me.

Stone shattered.

The impact sent a violent tremor through the earth,

dust erupting upward like a broken breath.

"…I can see it."

Not the claw.

Not just the attack.

The moment before it.

The shift in muscle.

The weight in its shoulder.

The intent.

The dragon roared.

"ROOOOOOOOOAR!"

The sound didn't just echo—it pressed. Against my chest. My lungs. My bones.

But my breathing stayed steady.

Slow.

Controlled.

It lunged.

Faster this time.

More violent.

It wasn't holding back anymore.

Good.

I didn't chase.

I waited.

Watched.

Its shoulders tightened. Its jaw shifted. Its body leaned—

It struck.

I moved.

Inside the arc.

Close.

Too close.

My blade rose—

Slash.

A clean line opened across its scales.

Blood followed immediately,

thick and dark.

The dragon staggered—

Then snapped back with its tail.

Fast.

Too fast.

I lowered my stance—

Blocked.

The impact exploded through my arms.

Pain surged instantly, sharp and deep.

My body slid backward across the ground.

"…Still heavy."

My grip tightened.

Sokaru felt different.

Not lighter.

Not sharper.

"…It's me."

I was the one changing.

The dragon inhaled.

Heat gathered in its throat—

Then—

A blast.

Fire tore through the ground where I had stood.

I stepped aside.

No hesitation.

No panic.

Only timing.

Only movement.

It charged again.

Claw.

Bite.

Tail.

Relentless.

I moved between them.

Step.

Turn.

Cut.

Every strike—

small.

But real.

Marks appeared across its body.

Thin lines.

Then more.

Then more.

"ROOOOOOOOOAR!"

It grew furious.

Faster.

Heavier.

Good.

This was no longer a fight.

This was an exchange.

No distance.

No retreat.

Only one outcome.

It raised its claw.

Higher than before.

The air itself distorted under its weight.

Then—

It fell.

Everything slowed.

Not the world.

The moment.

I stepped forward.

Inside its range.

Its eyes widened.

For the first time—

it saw me.

Not prey.

Not something small.

Something dangerous.

My blade rose.

Slash.

Deep.

Across its neck.

The dragon staggered.

But it didn't fall.

It opened its jaws.

One last attack.

I didn't step back.

I stepped forward.

Closer.

"…This is it."

One breath.

One step.

One strike.

The blade cut through.

The roar broke—

Then stopped.

The massive body trembled—

And collapsed.

The ground shook.

Dust settled slowly.

Silence followed.

"…It's over."

My knees hit the ground.

Breathing—

broken.

Vision—

fading.

Then—

A faint warmth spread through my body.

Slow.

Not enough to heal everything—

But enough.

"…I'm still alive."

I looked at the dragon.

Massive.

Still.

"…Too valuable to leave."

"Inventory."

[SYSTEM]

Inventory Opened.

A dark space unfolded.

Silent.

Endless.

The dragon's body flickered—

Then disappeared.

"…It grew."

Not just space.

Capacity.

I closed it.

The forest was quiet now.

No pressure.

No roar.

Only wind.

I stood.

Slowly.

Every step heavy—

But stable.

The path back was long.

But clear.

Fields appeared.

Familiar.

Simple.

Unchanged.

Hayato Village.

I stopped.

"…I'm back."

People noticed.

Stopped.

Turned.

"…Ren?"

More gathered.

"…He's alive…"

"…He came back…"

I walked forward.

"…I have something for you all."

"Inventory."

The ground shook.

The dragon appeared.

Silence.

No one moved.

"…A dragon…"

"…You killed it…"

"…Food."

"…Food?"

"…We can eat it."

A pause.

Then—

movement.

Fire lit.

Blades cut.

Voices rose.

That night—

the village changed.

Laughter returned.

Fear disappeared.

For the first time—

they weren't surviving.

They were living.

I sat aside.

Watching.

"…Good."

But—

"…not enough."

Training began.

Day 1—

They couldn't hold tools properly.

Hands shook.

Bodies unstable.

"Again."

Day 4—

They stood.

Not strong.

But stable.

Day 7—

The boy stepped forward.

Didn't fall.

"…Good."

Day 10—

First monsters.

They froze—

Then moved.

Day 13—

Mistakes.

But no collapse.

Day 15—

They stood firm.

Level 20.

Some reached 25.

"…You'll live."

"…Thank you."

"…If you stop moving…"

"…you die."

I turned.

Left.

No one stopped me.

The road stretched ahead.

Long.

Endless.

Day 1—

Fields disappeared.

Day 2—

Trees replaced them.

Night came.

Others stopped.

I didn't.

Walls appeared.

Tall.

Stone.

Unfamiliar.

The town.

At the gate—

"Identification."

"…I don't have one."

"No entry."

"…First time?"

A tag.

"Temporary pass."

"Register at the Adventurer Guild."

I entered.

The town was loud.

Different.

Alive.

A building stood out.

Crowded.

Adventurer Guild.

I stepped inside.

Noise.

Movement.

A woman at the counter.

"…New?"

"…Yeah."

"Fill this."

The same women looked at the form.

She glanced at the age,

then at my eye.

She didn't say a word.

"Here's your card."

"F Rank."

A card.

Light.

Simple.

"…Quests."

I walked to the board.

F Rank.

One stood out.

Herb Gathering.

Easy.

Outside—

Grass moved with the wind.

"Appraisal."

[Red Herb]

Another.

Another.

More.

Time passed.

The pouch filled.

I returned.

40 copper.

Again.

And again.

Repeat.
