Chapter 22 - The Gilded Debt

The notification didn't just ring. It screamed. Across the city, every smartphone, holographic billboard, and JAA-issued hunter comms-unit pulsed with a blinding, aggressive gold light.

In the slums, E-Rankers gripped rusted pipes with white-knuckled desperation. In the high-rises, A-Rank veterans checked their mana-clips. One trillion yen was more than a fortune; it was a ticket out of the apocalypse. The world had just been given a reason to hate Kaizer Gold.

The Divine Ledger

At the Eclipse Mansion, the air grew thick with the smell of old parchment and bitter ink. High above the obsidian trees, a massive golden scroll unfurled, stretching across the sky like a ceiling of scripture.

"The White Lotus has arrived," Sera whispered. She watched her Blood-Oracle cards scatter across the floor in a jagged pattern of ruined wealth.

Leading the charge wasn't a warrior, but Debt-Collector Han, an S-Rank specialist in contract magic. He stood at the edge of the Sovereign Domain, holding a gold-leafed ledger that radiated a suffocating authority.

"Kaizer Gold is in arrears!" Han's voice was magically amplified, echoing through the trees. "By the authority of the White Lotus, we enact the Divine Tax."

The scroll in the sky began to glow. A system alert hit the Abyssal Guard, flashing red in their vision.

[ZONE EFFECT: THE GILDED LEDGER] Every Skill Activation costs 5% of Total Life Force as a 'Mana Tax.' Non-payment results in Soul-Foreclosure.

"They're trying to make us pay to breathe," Vane growled. His Iron-Titan skin began to dim as the tax started to gnaw at his passive defenses.

Thousands of bounty hunters, a desperate mob of lower-ranked fighters, swarmed the gates. Behind them stood the White Lotus elite units, cold and patient, waiting for the Guard to exhaust themselves.

"Don't use your skills!" Vane roared, stepping in front of the Dread-Fortress. "Sera, fall back. Sentinel, hold the gate with pure mass. If we can't use mana, we'll use bone."

Vane charged into the mob. Without his Abyssal Might, he was a giant of raw meat and iron. He swung his massive fists, crushing shields and breaking bone, but every movement was a visible struggle. The tax was heavy, and the gilded trap was working. Or so the White Lotus thought.

The Frozen Vault

While the world's eyes were fixed on the mansion, the shadow of the White Lotus Central Treasury, a skyscraper of reinforced mana-glass in the heart of Chuo, began to bleed.

Kaizer and Rin stood in the lobby, surrounded by the frozen statues of security guards caught mid-motion.

"Time-Stasis," Rin noted. Her white-violet flames licked at the stagnant air. "They've locked the building in a tiny loop. No one can enter or leave without a key."

"A lock is just a concept, Rin," Kaizer said. He scanned the structure of the vault door ahead: a ten-foot slab of divine adamantine. "And concepts can be erased."

Rin stepped forward. She didn't slash at the door. She placed her palm against it and let the Eclipse Embers flow. The white-violet fire didn't melt the metal; it unmade the very history of the lock. The atoms simply forgot they were supposed to be joined. The door disintegrated into a fine, scentless mist.

They stepped into the Frozen Vault. Inside were rows upon rows of high-grade mana crystals, the ground battery that fueled the Floating Pagoda's shields.

"The JAA's treasury," Kaizer mused. "The wealth of a million harvested souls."

He didn't start bagging the crystals. Instead, he walked to the center of the room, where a massive, liquid-mana reservoir pulsed with a golden light.

"The Devourer's Hunger," Kaizer whispered.

His shadow detached from his feet and swirled into a localized black hole. The vacuum was absolute. The golden liquid, the wealth of the White Lotus and the power of the Pagoda, was sucked into Kaizer's abyss.

The Market Crash

Back at the mansion, Debt-Collector Han was laughing as Vane fell to one knee, his life force nearly drained by the relentless tax.

"Submit, monster!" Han shouted. "The Ledger always collects."

Suddenly, the gold-leafed ledger in Han's hands turned to grey ash. The golden scroll in the sky tore in half, its light flickering out like a dying bulb. Every White Lotus hunter's phone buzzed with a final, desperate alert.

[BOUNTY CANCELLED: INSUFFICIENT FUNDS.] [WHITE LOTUS GUILD STATUS: BANKRUPT.]

The mob of bounty hunters stopped mid-swing. They looked at their screens, then at each other. The trillion yen they were dying for had just evaporated.

Inside the empty vault, Kaizer stood amidst the dust of the White Lotus's fortune. He pulled a single obsidian coin from his pocket, a token of the Underworld, and flipped it onto the floor.

"Tell Choi the interest on his debt was higher than he expected," Kaizer said, looking directly into the security camera.

He looked at Rin, his leveling window flashing in the dark.

[LEVEL UP: 58] [NEW TITLE: THE ARCHITECT OF RUIN]

"The bank is closed," Kaizer said. "Now, let's go kill the Jackal."
