Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 – Midnight Monster Hunt

Chapter 27 – Midnight Monster Hunt

"Some prey is too dangerous to ignore… but I was never the prey to begin with."

The forest beyond the academy walls was forbidden.

Not officially.

Not in any rulebook.

But everyone knew.

Students didn't go there at night—not unless they had a death wish… or something worse.

And yet—

Aira Valen stepped past the boundary line without hesitation.

The moment her foot crossed the invisible threshold—

The air changed.

Colder.

Denser.

Alive.

The familiar hum of academy-controlled magic disappeared, replaced by something raw.

Untamed.

Wild.

Aira exhaled slowly.

Her Devour core pulsed once.

Then again.

Stronger.

Sharper.

Hungry.

"…so this is where they've been hiding," she murmured.

Because she could feel them.

Monsters.

Not the controlled summons from the arena.

Not the system-generated constructs from the dungeon.

These were real.

Breathing.

Hunting.

Waiting.

And for the first time in a while—

Aira smiled.

"Good."

"Let's see what real prey feels like."

Dorm Rumors – The Forbidden Location

Hours earlier—

The whispers had already begun.

"You heard, right? Someone saw Aira heading toward the outer forest."

"No way. Even upperclassmen avoid that place."

"They say monsters there don't follow academy rules…"

"…they kill."

Inside the dorm—

Liora sat on the edge of her bed, nervously twisting her fingers.

"She's going to get herself killed…" she whispered.

Across from her—

Seris leaned back lazily, eyes half-lidded.

"No," she said softly.

"She's going to kill something."

A pause.

Then—

"…or everything."

The room fell silent.

Because deep down—

They all knew.

Aira wasn't normal anymore.

She wasn't a student.

She was becoming something else.

Back to the Forest

The deeper Aira walked—

The quieter it became.

No wind.

No insects.

No sound.

Just—

Presence.

Watching her.

Tracking her.

Waiting.

Her Devour core reacted differently here.

Not just hunger.

Recognition.

Like this place—

And whatever lived inside it—

Belonged to the same system that created her.

"…interesting," she murmured.

Then—

It moved.

First Monster – The Hunter Appears

A blur in the darkness.

Fast.

Silent.

Lethal.

Aira didn't turn.

Didn't flinch.

She stepped forward—

just as the creature lunged from behind.

Claws met air.

Aira pivoted smoothly—

and caught it mid-motion.

For a split second—

Their eyes met.

Golden.

Predatory.

Intelligent.

Not mindless.

Good.

"Let's see what you are," Aira whispered.

Devour – First Absorption

Her hand tightened.

The Devour activated instantly.

The creature struggled—

violently.

Its magic surged.

Wild.

Unstable.

Perfect.

Aira absorbed it.

Not all at once.

Not recklessly.

Controlled.

Measured.

Efficient.

Energy flooded into her body.

Hot.

Sharp.

Alive.

Her muscles tightened.

Her senses expanded.

Her reflexes sharpened.

"…faster," she murmured.

Because she could feel it.

The difference.

These monsters—

Were stronger than anything inside the academy.

And that meant—

More evolution.

The creature collapsed into nothing.

Gone.

Absorbed.

Aira exhaled softly.

"…too easy."

But then—

The forest responded.

Multiple Signatures

One.

Two.

Three.

No—

More.

Surrounding her.

Aira's smile widened.

"Finally."

The Hunt Begins

They attacked together.

From all directions.

Wolves.

Serpents.

Something in between.

Faster than before.

Smarter.

More coordinated.

Aira moved.

Not defensively.

Offensively.

She stepped into the attack—

absorbing one strike—

dodging another—

redirecting a third.

Every movement precise.

Every action calculated.

Her Devour core processed everything instantly.

Not just absorbing—

Learning.

Adapting.

Evolving.

Mid-fight—

Something changed.

Devour Evolution – Predator Mode

Her perception sharpened.

Not just sensing magic—

But predicting it.

The flow.

The intention.

The pattern.

"…I can see it," she whispered.

Before they moved—

She already knew.

Aira didn't wait.

She attacked.

Her hand cut through the air—

grabbing one creature—

devouring it instantly.

She turned—

absorbed another mid-lunge—

redirected its energy into the third.

Impact.

Destruction.

Absorption.

One by one—

They fell.

Not because they were weak.

But because—

She was becoming something worse.

Hidden Observer – He Was Always There

High above—

Hidden among the branches—

A figure watched.

Silent.

Still.

Unseen.

Ren Kael

His eyes followed every movement.

Every absorption.

Every evolution.

His jaw tightened.

"…she came here alone."

A pause.

Then—

"…reckless."

But he didn't leave.

Didn't interfere.

Because he knew—

She didn't need saving.

Not yet.

Still—

His presence lingered.

Close.

Protective.

Possessive.

"…but if anything touches her…"

The air around him darkened.

"…I'll kill it."

Back to Aira – The Shift

The last creature fell.

Silence returned.

But not for long.

Because Aira felt it.

Something deeper.

Heavier.

Watching.

Not like prey.

Like a predator.

Her Devour core pulsed.

This time—

Not hunger.

Anticipation.

"…there you are."

Dorm Gossip Escalates

Back at the academy—

The rumors had already spiraled.

"She hasn't come back yet."

"She's really in the forest…"

"…at night?"

Liora paced the room anxiously.

"This is insane…"

Seris leaned against the wall, arms crossed.

"…no," she said softly.

"This is Aira."

A pause.

Then—

"…she's not insane."

"She's evolving."

The others didn't respond.

Because none of them knew—

What Aira would become.

The Larger Monster Approaches

Back in the forest—

The ground trembled.

Not violently.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Like something massive—

Was moving.

Aira didn't move.

Didn't step back.

She stepped forward.

Her eyes glowing faintly.

Her smile sharper than before.

"Come out."

The forest answered.

Trees cracked.

Branches snapped.

And then—

It appeared.

The Apex Monster

Twice her height.

Covered in jagged, obsidian-like armor.

Its body pulsed with raw, unstable magic.

But its eyes—

Were intelligent.

Aware.

Focused.

On her.

Aira's Devour core surged.

Not uncontrollably.

Perfectly aligned.

Like it had been waiting—

For this exact moment.

"…this one's different," she whispered.

From above—

Ren's eyes narrowed.

"…too different."

Tension – Before the Clash

The monster didn't attack immediately.

It observed her.

Just like she observed it.

Two predators.

Measuring.

Waiting.

Choosing the moment.

Then—

It spoke.

"…Devourer."

Aira's smile deepened.

"So you know what I am."

A pause.

Then—

It moved.

Cliffhanger – The Real Hunt Begins

Faster than anything before.

Stronger than anything she had faced outside the dungeon.

Its claws tore through the air—

aiming straight for her core.

Aira didn't dodge.

Didn't hesitate.

She stepped forward.

Her hand rising—

Devour activating—

Eyes glowing.

Smile widening.

"Perfect."

BOOM—

The forest shook.

Magic exploded outward.

And far above—

Ren stepped forward for the first time.

Because this—

Was no longer just a hunt.

It was a collision.

Between two apex predators.

And only one of them—

Was meant to survive.

"The monster in the forbidden forest just called me 'Devourer'… and for the first time—something didn't feel like prey."
