Chapter 1 - Deaths Door

Spring flowers covered the fields, giving the best signs of life that you can find.

Kids are playing all throughout the fields without a single care in the world about what could happen to them. That is just how it is to live a carefree lifestyle.

"Dante are you just going to stand there?" A Woman asked with curiosity in her voice.

I shifted my gaze towards her.

"I was just observing everything," I answered while putting my hands into my pockets.

"You should go get ready instead of observing," She said with a stern tone.

Mom hates to see me slacking so it only makes sense for her to give me grief.

"I'll get going then," I replied.

I walk past her after that, taking a moment to observe the scenery along the way. A full moon lingers up in the skies tonight, how lucky for us.

My walk back to my room is peaceful with no real interruptions or stops to distract me from getting ready.

I open up the door to a nice luxurious room with a soft crimson red to greet me; this being the curtains and even the bed sheets in my room.

Step. Step.

Before me stands a small chest which I open up promptly.

Inside the chest is a nicely folded black dress shirt, pants, a cape to go with it all, and lastly a special necklace with my family insignia.

The symbol of a dragon with two swords going through it from different angles, completely black, and it bares red eyes. Without any hesitation I put it on before grabbing the rest of the clothes.

I will never understand why I must dress up like this when we are already dealing with enough the way it is. Humans are getting wiser everyday while we continue to struggle.

Our food is getting harder to come by... And the other remaining families are starting to dwindle.

Eventually we'll all be at deaths door without any way to save ourselves.

BOOM!!!!!!

Immediately I turned towards the direction of the loud boom I heard.

"We're under attack!!!" Someone shouted in the distance.

I ran over to the window and peeked out; Catapults and cannons are just barely within my line of sight as I realize what's happening.

"Humans found us out as well," I said softly while looking out the window.

My eyes quickly darted back towards the door as I realize that I need to find the rest of my family.

I rushed out of my room and down the hallway towards where I assumed everyone was at. As I reached the common area I notice that a few people are already dead.

Humans stand before me with pure silver swords, blood slightly covering parts of them.

I didn't think they'd get in so quickly... Especially with how many precautions father took. How many of us are even still alive? Mom, Astaria, Dad, and even Lukas.

They could all be dead already but I have no real way of telling unless I find their bodies.

I'm going to have to fight my way through some of these humans first if I even want a chance at finding anyone.

I grabbed my sword out from my side and immediately dashed towards the men in front of me. Already swinging my sword upwards, slashing across the first man I reach.

SLASH!!!!!

Blood spilled onto the floor as my eyes quickly shifted to the next.

"We've got one here!" They shouted with anger in their voices.

CLANG!!!

I blocked the next attack that came towards me before pushing the sword to the side.

CHOMP!!!!

Without thinking I drive my teeth into the side of his throat, invigorating myself with his blood. The feeling surges through my body, letting my adrenaline reach new heights.

Blood is the best possible way for me to power through this.

I ripped my fangs out from his throat before he fell backwards; a look of panic now on the man's face as his hand clinged onto his neck.

"You wretched beast!!!" Another man shouted as he charged in.

His sword swung right past me as everything starts to feel like it slows down a bit.

Our kind is at their strongest when we can consume the blood of humans, but we have stayed away from them for a long time. It was hard but we managed to find substitutes to avoid conflicts.

I'm afraid to say that it isn't going to be the case this time around. They are getting stronger and wiser when it comes to fighting us when we don't want the war.

"Dante!!!!" A familiar voice shouted from behind me.

Instead of turning towards the voice I drive my sword into the man's chest.

PIERCE!!!!! Blood splurts out from where my sword entered, leaving the possibility for him to survive at 0.

It doesn't take me long to notice that the men are all dead who were previously standing in this room with me. Each one suffering from a fatal blow that they didn't anticipate... Even the man who's blood I drank.

"Dante!!! Are you just going to ignore me!?!" The voice shouted louder.

I turned around to see my father standing before me with a concerned look on his face.

"I was dealing with the threat at hand," I responded softly.

"We need to find your mother and sister," Dad managed to say with a calm tone.

"What about Lukas?" I questioned curiously.

"He'll be fine," Dad answered without any hesitation.

BOOOOM!!!!!!!!

Another loud explosion went off in the distance as I noticed the walls are broken in front of us. They are just going to bury everyone in here alive.

As I go to run I feel a hand push against my chest.

Shove!!!!

I fall back as a bunch of rubble falls in front of me, separating us from each other. There isn't any other way to get around without running into an army of humans.

My eyes quickly darted back and forth, trying to find any potential sign of a path... But nothing is there.

"Just try to find them! I'll buy as much time as I can!" Dad shouted from the other side.

"Alright!" I shouted back before picking up my sword.

Arguing is pointless when I know what needs to be done right now.
