When Rosalind follows her father to a grand banquet in the kingdom of Eryndor, she expects nothing but humiliation as her father intends to pawn her off to settle his gambling debts. Rosalind is fiercely unwilling to be controlled and is definitely unprepared for the attention of King Alaric, the kingdom’s feared tyrant whose dangerous charm and ruthless reputation make the bravest men tremble and women weak in their knees.

"What is Father like?" Julian continued to ask, and Rebecca sighed softly at the question. Looking at the innocence in her son's face, she knew she couldn't fill his heart with hatred, nor could she deceive him with a false image. Taking a slow breath, she finally nodded. "I'll tell you the truth," she said quietly, and Julian returned the nod, waiting patiently for her to continue.
