Chapter 24 - Aftermath

They didn't speak for a while.

The ground behind them stayed silent, broken terrain stretching back toward where the mass had been. Nothing followed. No new movement, no shifting shapes, no signs that the thing they destroyed was rebuilding.

But that didn't mean it was over.

Yuto walked at a steady pace, his steps clean and controlled. The mana inside him moved smoothly, responding without delay. The integration from the core had settled completely now. No instability. No resistance.

Better.

Not stronger in a simple sense.

More efficient.

Ryn walked slightly behind him, glancing back every so often.

"…You sure nothing's coming?" he asked.

"Yes."

Ryn let out a breath. "You always sound sure."

"I am."

"That's not normal."

Yuto didn't respond.

Mira kept her distance from both of them, but closer than before. Not trust. Not yet. But she wasn't trying to leave either.

"…That thing wasn't just making monsters," she said after a while.

"…No."

"It was learning?"

"Yes."

Silence followed.

Ryn kicked a loose stone forward as they walked. "So what does that mean?"

Yuto answered immediately. "There will be more."

Mira nodded slightly. "…Yeah."

"Not here," Yuto continued. "But elsewhere."

Ryn frowned. "So we just destroyed one… and there are others?"

"Likely."

Ryn laughed once, short and dry. "Great. That's reassuring."

They kept moving.

The terrain slowly began to change. The cracks in the ground became smaller, less frequent. The air felt lighter—not completely normal, but less oppressive than before.

Mira noticed it too. "We're leaving the affected area."

Yuto already knew.

The mana in the environment had shifted back to a more stable state. Less distortion. Less interference.

Better conditions.

For most people.

For him—it didn't matter as much anymore.

"…You felt that earlier, right?" Ryn asked suddenly.

Yuto glanced at him. "What?"

"That… suppression. Or whatever that was."

"Mhm."

"Yeah. That."

Yuto considered it briefly.

"…It reduced response efficiency."

Ryn blinked. "…You say that like it's a small thing."

"It is."

"It made you slower."

"Marginally."

Ryn stared at him. "…You got thrown back."

Yuto didn't deny it.

"…Yes."

"And you still think that's marginal?"

Yuto looked forward again. "The effect was understood. It can be adjusted for."

Ryn shook his head slightly. "You really aren't normal."

Mira glanced at Yuto.

"…He's right," she said.

Yuto didn't respond.

They walked in silence again.

Time passed.

Eventually, signs of human activity appeared.

Tracks in the dirt.

Cut wood.

Then—

structures.

A road.

Ryn stopped for a second, then smiled slightly.

"…We made it."

Ahead, a small outpost came into view.

Wooden walls, reinforced with stone. Watch posts. A gate.

People were already watching them.

Yuto slowed slightly.

Intentional.

Less precise movement.

Ryn noticed.

"…You're doing that thing again."

"Yes."

They approached the gate.

"Stop there."

They stopped.

"We're just passing through," Ryn said.

"From the east?"

"Yes," Mira answered.

"You shouldn't be alive."

"…We hear that a lot."

The guard looked at Yuto longer than the others.

Yuto didn't react.

"…Open the gate."

They entered.

Inside—

movement.

People.

Structure.

Order.

Yuto observed.

System.

Predictable.

Useful.

He continued forward.
