Chapter 4 - Ghost in the Code

Kai's grin faded.

That voice—it wasn't a system alert. It wasn't Byte. It wasn't Nora.

It was his own.

But older. Sharper. Terrifyingly confident.

The city streets flickered again, but this time not like a glitch. The asphalt rippled, like water. Buildings shivered as if scanning themselves for errors. The neon lights twisted, forming words only Kai could read:

"Forbidden Class… Detected. Target: Kai Venn."

Byte zipped around his head like a spark, humming nervously."…Uh… that was your future self. Or some deleted version. Or—okay, yeah, that's terrifying. Run, maybe?"

Kai rubbed his temples."Future me. First Architect. The guy who built this System… and apparently, my biggest headache."

Nora Kane's expression remained unreadable. She crouched, fingertips grazing the warped pavement, drawing glowing glyphs that twisted around reality itself.

"Kai," she said calmly, voice carrying over the static hum of the grid above."The System doesn't like anomalies. You're no longer just a player—you're a variable it cannot ignore. And it just called in… backup."

Kai blinked at her."…Backup? You mean more of that Proxy thing?"

Nora shook her head."No. Worse. He's watching from inside the core. He can trace your every hack, your every line, your every thought if you let him."

Byte floated higher, jittering."Ohhhhhhh, so we're basically in hard mode now. This is—this is unplayable. I mean, metaphorically. But also literally."

Kai pinched the bridge of his nose."Of course. Of course. Everything's fine."

He closed his eyes. Took a deep breath. And when he opened them, the HUD blinked differently.

Kai's heart thumped.

"…Sandbox Override. That's… the ability to create a local instance of the world? Like… a test environment?"

Byte's voice was nearly a squeak."Yeah. And if you screw this up? Reality breaks. Literally. Not joking."

Kai grinned."…Worth it."

He reached out, fingers brushing against the invisible strings of the city.

The world rippled in response.

It wasn't a fight. It was a test.

Lines of code appeared before him, visible only through Debug Vision.

Building_1023: Stable Vehicle_342: Physics_Corrupted NPC_017: Frozen Unknown_Code_Block: Active

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"Unknown_Code_Block… let's see what secrets you're hiding."

He reached in, fingers moving not through air but through logic itself.

Something screamed.

Not a creature. Not a human.

A line of code—a corrupted function—exploded in a cascade of red errors. The city wavered. Buildings stretched, twisted, then snapped back into place.

Byte cheered."YES! You just debugged a city block! And didn't die! I'm calling this heroic!"

Kai didn't answer. His attention was elsewhere.

He felt it before he saw it—a ripple in the framework. A faint shimmer. A line of code that shouldn't exist.

SYSTEM LOG

Process: Future_Self_Observer

Status: Active

Priority: Infinite

Access: Unauthorized

Warning: Immediate Corruption Risk

Kai froze.

"…He's inside my sandbox."

Nora's eyes narrowed."That's not good. If he manipulates the sandbox, he can rewrite your reality before you even touch it."

Byte buzzed, voice trembling slightly."Ohhhhhhh, that's… like, really bad. Like, apocalyptic bad."

Kai's fingers hovered over the floating lines of code. He felt the temptation—the absolute power to rewrite everything.

And deep down, he knew it was a trap.

The first step? Survival.

The second step? Out-hacking himself.

Kai smirked, rubbing his hands together."Alright, First Architect… let's play."

And somewhere deep inside the System, a line of code pulsed:

"Variable Kai Venn: Active. Corruption Potential: 73%. Proceed with caution."

Byte floated next to him, eyes wide."…You're insane. Absolutely insane. But hey, I'm in. Let's wreck this place."

Kai laughed, the sound blending with the hum of the fractured city.

The war wasn't coming. It was already here.
