Eldric spread an old, scorched page.
Symbols lined the edges—similar to the ones beneath the sanctuary.
"They were experiments," Eldric said. "Attempts to perfect the Ember Core."
Kael leaned in. "And?"
"They succeeded."
Kael's stomach tightened. "That didn't sound like success."
Eldric met his gaze.
"They removed the human part."
Silence.
Lira stepped closer. "So what's left?"
Eldric's voice dropped.
"Something that doesn't burn… because it already has."
