Chapter 17 - A Situation Like This

Caspian did not act immediately after receiving the report from Kai, but the information stayed in his mind as he continued with his work. Maya's situation was already clear to him, and he understood the pressure she was under without needing further explanation. Medical treatment, financial strain, and limited time were not unfamiliar situations to him, and he knew how quickly they forced people into decisions they would not normally consider.

He did not see it as something emotional. To him, it was a situation with structure, one that could be handled if approached correctly. What mattered was timing and control, and he knew both were already present in this case.

"Kai."

Kai stepped forward. "Yes."

"Keep watching her situation," Caspian said. "I want updates if anything changes."

"Yes, sir."

Caspian paused briefly before adding, "And the hospital. Make sure everything remains stable."

Kai understood the meaning behind the instruction. "Understood."

There were no more words after that. Caspian returned to his work, but the decision had already started forming in his mind. He was not rushing it, but he was not ignoring it either.

At the hospital, Maya stood outside the doctor's office, her hand resting lightly against the door before she knocked. She had already spoken to her mother, and she had kept her voice steady the entire time, but now she needed clear answers. When she stepped inside, the doctor motioned for her to sit, and she did without hesitation.

He explained the situation again, this time in more detail. The treatment needed to begin soon, and delaying it would only make things worse. When Maya asked about the payment, the answer did not change. The amount was still far beyond what she could manage on her own.

Maya listened carefully, asking a few questions to understand the process, but her thoughts were already moving ahead. She needed to find a way to handle it, even if she did not know how yet. When the conversation ended, she thanked the doctor and stepped out, her expression calm even though her mind was not.

As she walked through the hallway, she began to think through every option she had. Her salary was not enough. Her savings were almost gone. Asking for help was not something she wanted to do, and even if she did, she was not sure who she could turn to. Everything led back to the same point.

She needed money.

Maya stepped outside the hospital and stopped for a moment, taking a slow breath before continuing. She could not stay still. She needed to keep moving, even if she did not have a clear solution yet.

The next day, she returned to work as usual.

She did not speak about the hospital. She did not mention her mother. She focused on her tasks and kept her interactions minimal, as she always did. From the outside, nothing seemed different, but her thoughts were not the same.

She made a mistake in one of the documents and corrected it immediately, but the distraction remained. She was not as focused as before, and she knew it.

Caspian noticed.

He did not call her in. He did not question her. He observed.

There was a shift in her behavior, small but clear enough for him to recognize. It confirmed what he already knew. Pressure was building, and it would not take long before it reached a point where she would have to make a decision.

Later that day, Maya received another call from the hospital.

This time, she did not step away immediately. She looked at the screen for a second before answering, keeping her voice low as she listened. The update was not good. The treatment could not be delayed much longer, and arrangements needed to be made soon.

When the call ended, she stood still for a moment before placing her phone down.

Her options were running out.

Across the office, Caspian watched her briefly before returning his attention to his work. He had seen enough.

The situation had reached the point he expected.

And now, it was only a matter of time.
