Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 - Signs of Life

The mountain path stretched on.

The snow began to thin as Xu Tian moved lower. The air was still cold, but no longer biting.

The silence changed.

It was no longer empty.

There were signs.

Broken branches.

Faint tracks.

Old footprints, half-covered by snow.

Xu Tian slowed slightly.

"…People pass through here," he said.

Not many.

But enough.

The children were quiet.

The boy slept.

The girl watched the path ahead.

Xu Tian adjusted the cloth around them.

"We're getting closer," he said.

Closer to something.

Not safety.

But civilization.

He continued forward.

The terrain shifted as he descended.

Rock gave way to soil.

Snow to patches of exposed ground.

The air felt lighter.

More alive.

Xu Tian stopped suddenly.

Smoke.

Faint.

But visible in the distance.

His eyes narrowed.

"…A settlement."

Not large.

But real.

He could see it now.

Simple structures.

Wood.

Stone.

Built along the base of the mountain.

Xu Tian didn't move immediately.

He watched.

Carefully.

There was movement.

People.

Going about their tasks.

Normal.

Unaware.

Or pretending to be.

Xu Tian stepped forward again.

Slow.

Measured.

The path led directly toward the settlement.

As he approached, the atmosphere changed.

The quiet tension of the mountain was replaced by something else.

Caution.

Curiosity.

Eyes began to turn.

Not many.

But enough.

Xu Tian could feel it.

They were watching him.

Not openly.

But not hiding it either.

He stepped into the outer edge of the settlement.

The ground here was clear.

Trampled.

Used.

A man nearby paused in his work, glancing up.

Then looking away.

Others did the same.

Xu Tian stopped.

"…Not welcoming," he murmured.

But not hostile either.

That was enough.

For now.

He walked further in.

Simple houses lined the path.

Nothing special.

Nothing strong.

But stable.

Xu Tian's eyes moved across everything.

Searching.

Measuring.

"…Temporary," he thought.

This wasn't a place to stay.

But it was a place to learn.

He stopped near a small open area.

The children stirred slightly.

Xu Tian looked down.

"We'll rest here," he said quietly.

But his attention remained outward.

Because even here, he could feel it.

Faint.

Hidden among the normal people.

Something else.

Not as strong as the ones before.

But not ordinary either.

Xu Tian's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…So it's not just the mountain."

The world beyond it was no different.

And this time-

He had stepped into it.
