Chapter 25 - The Place You Already Belonged To

Evening settled gently over the villa, the kind that softened everything it touched.

The sky had turned a quiet shade of amber, fading slowly into blue, and the garden outside breathed with a calm that felt almost deliberate. The scent of damp earth still lingered faintly from the previous night's sudden rain, mixing with the subtle fragrance of flowers lining the stone pathway. Inside, the villa carried its usual stillness—wide spaces, soft lighting, and the quiet presence of two people who had begun to occupy it not just physically, but entirely.

Aum stood near the window.

Not looking outside.

But aware of everything within.

Xu Chen moved through the room with an ease that had returned only partially since the previous day. He was calmer now, or at least he appeared to be, but there were moments—brief, almost invisible—where his thoughts seemed to pause longer than they should. He picked up a book, set it down, checked his phone, then walked toward the kitchen without committing to anything fully.

Aum watched him.

Not directly.

But continuously.

There had always been something between them.

It had never needed words.

And now—

it refused to be ignored.

The doorbell rang.

It cut through the quiet so suddenly that both of them turned at the same time.

Xu Chen frowned slightly.

"I'm not expecting anyone."

He walked to the door anyway.

Opened it.

And then....

paused.

For the first time since morning, something in his expression changed completely.

Not confusion.

Not irritation.

Recognition.

"…You," he said, softer now.

She stood at the entrance like she had always known she would be welcomed.

Shěn Yáo Jī (沈瑶姬)

There was nothing loud about her presence.

No deliberate attempt to draw attention.

And yet...

it gathered naturally.

She wore a light, flowing dress in muted ivory, the fabric catching the fading light in a way that made it seem almost weightless. Her hair fell in soft, controlled waves down her back, dark and smooth, framing a face that carried an effortless kind of elegance. Her features were refined, not sharp but precise, with a calm symmetry that made her expressions feel composed even when they weren't. Her eyes held depth—not dramatic, not distant—but aware, observant, and quietly confident.

She did not need to announce herself.

She simply existed, and the space adjusted.

"You disappeared," she said, her voice smooth, carrying a faint warmth that suggested familiarity rather than accusation.

Xu Chen leaned slightly against the doorframe, a small smile forming.

"You didn't call."

She tilted her head.

"You moved without telling me."

"That's not entirely true."

"You told people," she replied lightly. "Just not me."

There was no tension in it.

Only history.

Aum remained where he was.

Watching.

Xu Chen stepped aside.

"Come in."

She walked in like she had been there before.

Because she had.

Her gaze moved briefly across the room, taking in the details, the arrangement, the subtle signs of someone else's presence that had not been there before. It lingered—just for a second—on Aum.

Not long enough to be rude.

But long enough to acknowledge.

"And this?" she asked, turning back to Xu Chen.

"Aum," Xu Chen said simply. "He's staying with me."

Her lips curved slightly.

"Staying," she repeated, as if the word held more weight than it should.

Aum met her gaze.

There was nothing hostile in it.

Nothing dismissive.

But there was something else.

Understanding.

She stepped closer.

Not to Aum.

To Xu Chen.

"You've changed the place," she said, reaching out to adjust the collar of his shirt lightly, her fingers brushing the fabric with ease. "It feels less… empty."

Xu Chen didn't react.

Not to the touch.

Not to the closeness.

"It was always fine," he replied.

She smiled faintly.

"You've always had a high tolerance for silence."

Aum watched that moment.

Not the words.

The distance.

Or rather.....

the lack of it.

There was no hesitation in her movement.

No uncertainty in her presence.

She knew where to stand.

How close to be.

What she could touch and what she didn't need to ask for.

And Xu Chen allowed it.

Naturally.

Aum felt it then.

Not sharp.

Not sudden.

But sinking.

"They still think we'll end up together, you know," she said casually, glancing at Xu Chen as she moved toward the couch.

Xu Chen let out a quiet breath.

"They've been saying that since we were twelve."

"And you never corrected them."

A pause.

"…It never mattered enough to," Xu Chen replied.

Her smile deepened slightly.

"Convenient."

The word lingered.

Aum stood still.

There was no reaction on his face.

No visible shift.

But something inside him had begun to move.

It wasn't anger.

It wasn't confusion.

It was....

displacement.

He realized, slowly, almost reluctantly that there were parts of Xu Chen's life that had already been lived.

Moments that had existed long before him.

Connections that had formed without his presence.

And more importantly...

places that had already been filled.

She belonged here.

Not in the villa.

In Xu Chen's world.

And Aum....

did not know where he stood in it.

The conversation continued, light, familiar, effortless.

They spoke of small things—neighbors, shared memories, passing time—but beneath it all ran something quieter, something that Aum could not quite ignore anymore. He found himself listening not to what was said, but to how it was said, how naturally Xu Chen responded, how easily he fit into that rhythm.

At some point, he stopped listening entirely.

Because the realization had already begun.

When she stood to leave, it was without hesitation.

No lingering.

No need to extend the moment.

At the door, she paused.

Her gaze shifted once more—to Aum.

A small smile.

Soft.

Knowing.

"Take care of him," she said.

It wasn't clear who she meant.

And then she left.

The door closed.

Silence returned.

But it did not feel the same.

Xu Chen turned back into the room, running a hand lightly through his hair.

"…That was unexpected."

Aum didn't respond.

Xu Chen glanced at him.

"…You okay?"

Aum nodded.

"Yes."

But the answer came slower.

Xu Chen watched him for a second longer.

Then looked away.

"…She's just—someone I've known for a long time."

"I understand."

And he did.

That was the problem.

Later, when the night had settled completely and the villa returned to its quiet, Aum stood alone again by the window.

The reflection looking back at him felt… unfamiliar.

Not because he did not recognize himself.

But because something within him had changed.

On his world, things like this were never left undefined.

Connections were structured.

Emotions were measured.

Attractions - chosen.

Nothing was left to chance.

Nothing was allowed to grow without acknowledgment.

And yet, this had.

Without permission.

Without clarity.

Without control.

He thought of Xu Chen.

The way he moved.

The way he spoke.

The way his presence filled spaces without effort.

The way it had begun to feel, necessary.

He thought of her.

The ease.

The certainty.

The place she occupied.

And something in him resisted it.

Quietly.

Firmly.

Not because she was wrong.

But because, he wanted that place.

The realization came slowly.

Then all at once.

This was not discomfort.

Not confusion.

Not unfamiliarity.

This was...

wanting.

Not briefly.

Not temporarily.

But completely.

Aum closed his eyes.

For the first time:

he did not try to analyze it.

Did not try to correct it.

Did not try to deny it.

He simply...

accepted it.

"…I want him."

The words were quiet.

Barely spoken.

But clear.

And irreversible.

Across the room, Xu Chen stood still.

He hadn't heard the words.

But something....

felt different.

Aum's silence.

The space between them.

The weight in the air.

It unsettled him in a way he couldn't explain.

Because for the first time...

he wasn't just confused about Aum.

He was confused about himself.

And that....

was far more dangerous.
