Chapter 49 - The Space Between Two Galaxies

Morning arrived without ceremony.

Soft light spread across the room, slipping past the curtains and settling over the bed, over the quiet stillness that had become familiar in the house.

Aum was already awake.

He lay on his back, eyes open, watching the ceiling for a moment before turning his head slightly toward the other side of the room.

Xu Chen was still asleep.

One arm resting loosely over his head, the blanket pushed aside, his breathing steady and deep.

For a few seconds, Aum just… watched.

Not in the way he used to—observing, analyzing, categorizing.

There was no calculation in it.

Just… noticing.

He sat up slowly, careful not to disturb the quiet.

The air felt different this morning.

Lighter.

But also carrying something else beneath it.

Something he hadn't fully defined yet.

By the time Xu Chen woke up, Aum was already in the kitchen.

Two cups of coffee sat on the counter.

Toast, slightly crisp, placed neatly on a plate.

Xu Chen leaned against the doorway, running a hand through his hair.

"You've started doing this regularly."

Aum glanced at him.

"It's efficient."

A pause.

Then, after a second—

"And… it's nice."

Xu Chen didn't respond immediately.

But something in his expression shifted, just slightly.

They ate quietly.

Not because there was nothing to say.

But because neither of them felt the need to fill the space.

Xu Chen checked the time, standing up halfway through his coffee.

"I might be late today."

Aum nodded.

"Work?"

"Yeah. We're running analysis on a new section. Meera's coming in too."

Aum's hand paused for a fraction of a second.

Then continued.

"Okay."

No extra question.

No added comment.

Xu Chen noticed.

But didn't push.

"I'll try to get back early," he added, almost as an afterthought.

Aum looked up briefly.

"You don't have to."

Xu Chen met his eyes.

A small pause.

"Still will."

Aum held his gaze for a second longer.

Then nodded.

"Alright."

The moment passed.

Xu Chen grabbed his keys and left.

The door closed.

And the house… quieted again.

Aum stood there for a moment.

Just standing.

Then he turned back to the table, picking up the empty cups and moving toward the sink.

The routine had become familiar.

But the feeling inside it hadn't.

The hours that followed moved differently.

Not slow.

Not fast.

Just… steady.

Aum sat at the table with his laptop open, scrolling through pages filled with structured information.

Universities.

Programs.

Application processes.

He had gone through it before.

But today, he was looking at it differently.

Less like a system to decode.

More like… something he might actually have to live within.

His fingers paused over the keyboard.

Identity proof.

Nationality.

Academic records.

Requirements repeated across every page.

Unavoidable.

He leaned back slightly, exhaling through his nose.

"I get it," he murmured under his breath.

"You need structure."

His gaze lingered on the screen.

"But where do I fit into it?"

The question stayed.

Not urgent.

But persistent.

He closed the laptop after a while.

Not abruptly.

Just… enough for now.

The silence returned.

Aum stood up, stretching his arms slightly before walking toward the living room.

That's when he noticed it.

A shelf he hadn't paid much attention to before.

He walked closer.

Photographs.

Not digital.

Not stored behind screens.

Physical.

He picked one up.

Xu Chen.

Younger.

Standing between two people—his parents.

Smiling.

Not the small, controlled smile he had now.

Something wider.

Unrestrained.

Aum's gaze lingered.

He set it down and picked up another.

A group photo.

Friends.

Shoulders pressed together.

Laughing at something outside the frame.

Xu Chen was there too.

Head tilted slightly back, eyes half closed in laughter.

Aum's fingers tightened slightly around the frame.

"He looks… different," he said quietly.

Not in appearance.

But in something else.

He moved through more photos.

Festivals.

Moments.

Time captured in fragments.

Each one showed a version of Xu Chen that Aum hadn't seen directly.

A version shaped by people.

By relationships.

By history.

Aum set the last frame back carefully.

For a moment, he just stood there.

Processing.

Xu Chen had a life.

A complete one.

And Aum had entered it… unexpectedly.

The thought didn't feel uncomfortable.

But it changed something.

Slightly.

By late afternoon, the quiet had shifted again.

Aum stood in the kitchen, his phone resting against the counter.

A video played on the screen.

Careful hands demonstrated each step.

Measured movements.

Controlled heat.

Timing precise.

Aum watched once.

Then replayed a section.

Not because he didn't understand.

But to confirm the sequence.

Ingredients were already laid out.

Measured.

Prepared.

He moved without hesitation.

Oil heated to the exact point before smoking.

Ingredients added in order.

Not rushed.

Not delayed.

The sound of sizzling filled the kitchen.

Aroma rising gradually, layering into something rich and warm.

He adjusted the flame slightly.

Watched.

Understood.

Every step had a reason.

Every movement a purpose.

By the time the dish was complete, he didn't need the video anymore.

The rest followed naturally.

Another dish.

Then another.

Not excessive.

Just… complete.

Aum stepped back, looking at the table.

The arrangement felt deliberate.

Balanced.

He nodded slightly to himself.

"Sometimes," he said quietly, "a proper meal makes more sense than just eating."

The words came out simply.

But they stayed.

The door opened just as the evening settled in.

Xu Chen stepped inside, shoulders slightly tense, his expression carrying the weight of the day.

He paused.

Something felt… different.

He stepped further in.

And then he saw it.

The table.

Set.

Food arranged neatly.

Steam still rising faintly.

He didn't speak immediately.

Just stood there.

Aum turned from the kitchen.

"You're back."

Xu Chen blinked once.

"Yeah."

A small pause.

"You did this?"

Aum nodded.

"Yeah."

A slight shrug.

"Thought I'd try something different."

Xu Chen stepped closer, his gaze moving over the dishes.

"You followed a recipe?"

"Video," Aum replied. "Watched it once. That was enough."

Xu Chen let out a quiet breath, something between disbelief and quiet admiration.

They sat down.

Xu Chen picked up his chopsticks, tasting the first dish.

He paused.

Then looked up.

"It's good."

Aum watched him.

Not for approval.

But for… confirmation.

"That's good," he said.

Xu Chen shook his head slightly.

"No, I mean it. This is actually really good."

Aum nodded once.

They ate.

Quietly at first.

Then—

small conversation.

"You didn't have to do all this."

Aum looked up briefly.

"I know."

A pause.

"But I wanted to."

Xu Chen's hand stilled slightly.

Something about that landed deeper than expected.

Aum added, after a second—

"And it's efficient. One proper meal covers more than multiple small ones."

Xu Chen huffed lightly.

"Of course you'd explain it like that."

Aum smiled faintly.

They continued eating.

The atmosphere felt different tonight.

Not just comfortable.

Closer.

Later, the house settled again into quiet.

Dishes cleaned.

Lights dimmed.

They moved toward the bedroom without much discussion.

Aum lay down first, his body relaxing almost instantly.

Xu Chen followed, turning off the light before settling on the couch.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Then, quietly—

"You had a busy day too," Xu Chen said.

Aum didn't open his eyes.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"I looked into things again."

Xu Chen turned his head slightly.

"And?"

Aum exhaled slowly.

"It's complicated."

Another pause.

"But I'm starting to understand it."

Xu Chen didn't respond immediately.

Because that meant something.

Aum shifted slightly, settling deeper into the bed.

"I'll figure something out," he said quietly.

Xu Chen watched him in the dark.

Then, just as quietly—

"I know you will."

The room fell silent again.

But the silence didn't feel empty.

It felt… shared.

And somewhere within it—

two different paths were still unfolding.

Close.

But not yet the same.
