Chapter 6 - The excellent scheme

The mountain wind carried the scent of dry stone and ash when Gu Yanshu stepped out of the cave. Morning light had just begun to settle over the ridges, thin and pale, spreading across the valley like a quiet promise of another ordinary day. The shattered wall inside the cave lay behind him, broken into rough fragments that still held traces of the force he had released the night before. He did not look back at it. Strength was not something to admire; it was something to measure.

He walked down the narrow slope, steady and unhurried, letting his breathing fall into a slow rhythm. The dragon core had already dissolved into his meridians, leaving behind a faint heat that moved through his body like a hidden current. Each step felt lighter than before. Each movement carried more precision. He could feel the difference clearly, like the gap between a dull blade and a sharpened one.

Area 900 appeared again at the edge of the valley after several hours of walking. The town looked smaller now. The broken rooftops and uneven streets were the same, but something in his perception had changed. The distance between buildings, the width of the alleys, the flow of people moving through the market—everything seemed slower and easier to understand, as if the world had revealed a clearer pattern.

He stopped near the entrance.

A group of merchants were arguing beside a broken cart, their voices tense and sharp. Guards stood near the gate, watching the road with tired expressions. Nothing unusual.

Then a scream cut through the air.

It came from the western street.

People scattered immediately, running away from the noise, and a heavy crashing sound followed, like wood snapping under enormous weight. Gu Yanshu turned his head slightly and walked toward the disturbance without rushing.

A large creature had broken through a storage building. Its body was covered in dark scales, and its jaws crushed a wooden beam as it dragged itself forward. The beast moved slowly but carried enough strength to tear through walls with ease. Its eyes glowed faintly red, scanning the street for movement.

No one stood in its path.

Gu Yanshu stepped forward.

The creature noticed him and let out a low growl, its claws scraping against the ground. It lunged without hesitation, its massive body moving with sudden speed.

Gu Yanshu moved to the side.

The beast crashed into the wall behind him, splintering wood and stone. Before it could turn again, his hand struck its neck, precise and controlled. The impact forced the creature down, breaking its balance. He stepped forward and drove his palm into its skull.

A sharp crack echoed through the street.

The beast stopped moving.

Silence returned almost immediately.

Gu Yanshu stood still for a moment, watching the body to ensure it would not move again. Then he stepped back and wiped the dust from his sleeve. The guards at the gate stared at him in disbelief, but he did not acknowledge them. There was nothing to say.

More creatures appeared over the next few hours.

A serpent crawling through the drainage tunnels.

A horned wolf breaking into a supply shed.

A winged predator diving from the rooftops.

Each one fell in the same quiet manner. Quick movements. Clean strikes. No wasted effort. The people of Area 900 began watching him with cautious curiosity, unsure whether to approach or stay away.

Gu Yanshu did not stay in the center of the town. He moved along the edges, observing the patterns of the attacks and the direction from which the creatures came. Most of them arrived from the northern ruins, where the old mining tunnels stretched deep into the mountain.

By evening, he reached the outer road.

That was when he saw it.

The creature stood at the end of the road, half-hidden behind broken stone walls. Its body was larger than the dragon he had seen before, though thinner and more agile. Blue flames flickered along its claws, and its eyes moved slowly across the ground as if searching for something.

It was not rushing.

It was waiting.

Gu Yanshu stopped walking.

He watched it carefully, measuring distance, speed, and movement. The air around the creature felt heavier, like a quiet pressure pressing against the skin. Fighting it directly would not end well. The difference in strength was clear enough to understand without testing.

He stepped back into the shadow of a ruined building.

Then he waited.

Minutes passed.

Footsteps approached from the southern road.

A traveler appeared, carrying a long spear across his shoulder and walking with steady confidence. His clothes were simple, but the way he moved showed experience. His gaze shifted immediately toward the creature at the end of the road.

Gu Yanshu stepped forward slightly and called out.

"Help."

The traveler turned.

Gu Yanshu pointed toward the creature. "It will reach the town soon."

The traveler studied him for a moment, then looked back at the beast. His expression hardened slightly.

"You cannot fight it alone."

"No."

The traveler nodded once and walked forward. "Then stand behind me."

Gu Yanshu moved back without argument.

The creature noticed them and let out a low roar, blue flames spreading across its claws as it charged forward. The traveler stepped into its path, spear cutting through the air with precise force. The first strike forced the creature back, and the second drove into its shoulder, releasing a burst of energy that shook the ground.

The fight was fast and violent.

Stone shattered. Fire scattered across the road. The creature moved like a storm, but the traveler matched it with calm precision, striking again and again until the beast collapsed under the final blow.

Silence followed.

The traveler pulled his spear free and exhaled slowly.

Gu Yanshu stepped forward. "Thank you."

The traveler looked at him briefly. "You called for help at the right time."

"Yes."

"You were watching it first."

"Yes."

The traveler smiled faintly. "Good judgment."

They walked back toward Area 900 together.

On the way, the traveler spoke occasionally, asking simple questions about the town and the attacks. Gu Yanshu answered calmly, never adding unnecessary details. The conversation remained natural, steady, and quiet.

When they reached the town, the guards relaxed slightly after seeing the creature's body being dragged away.

The traveler rested his spear against the wall and looked at the sky.

"You plan to stay here?"

"For now," Gu Yanshu said.

The traveler nodded. "Then I will remain for a few days as well. These attacks may not be finished yet."

Gu Yanshu lowered his gaze slightly, as if considering something.

"That would be helpful."

The traveler sat near the gate, drinking water and watching the road.

Gu Yanshu stood beside him, silent, observing the town and the distant mountains, already thinking about the next steps, the next movements, and the quiet paths that would slowly shape the future without drawing attention to themselves. The traveler did not give his name on the first night.

He sat near the outer gate of Area 900, sharpening his spear with slow and careful movements while the evening wind carried dust across the road. The guards rotated shifts, merchants closed their stalls, and the town gradually sank into silence again. Gu Yanshu remained nearby, sitting on a broken stone bench, reading a worn map of the surrounding regions as if the events of the day had already faded from his thoughts.

After some time, the traveler spoke.

"You observe more than you speak."

Gu Yanshu did not look up from the map. "Observation prevents unnecessary mistakes."

The traveler smiled slightly. "And speaking creates them?"

"Sometimes."

The sound of metal scraping against stone continued for a while before the traveler placed the spear beside him.

"Name," he said.

"Gu Yanshu."

The traveler nodded. "Lin Qiren."

The name settled into the air quietly.

Lin Qiren was not careless. His movements were steady, his breathing controlled, and his attention moved naturally between the road, the guards, and the surrounding rooftops. He was the type of person who stayed alert even while resting, which meant simple deception would not work on him.

Gu Yanshu closed the map.

"The attacks are increasing."

Lin Qiren leaned back against the wall. "Yes."

"They are not random."

Lin Qiren glanced at him. "You noticed that."

"The creatures come from the same direction."

"The northern tunnels."

Gu Yanshu nodded.

Lin Qiren's eyes narrowed slightly. "You think something is pushing them out."

"Yes."

Lin Qiren stayed silent for a moment, then let out a slow breath. "I was thinking the same thing."

That small agreement formed the first thread of cooperation.

Not forced.

Not requested.

Simply aligned thinking.

The next morning, Gu Yanshu walked through the town collecting simple supplies—water, dried grain, and a small oil lamp. He moved through the streets normally, speaking to shopkeepers and workers with quiet politeness, asking about recent attacks and the condition of the northern tunnels.

People spoke easily.

Fear made information flow naturally.

An old miner mentioned that strange sounds had been coming from the tunnels at night.

A merchant said that several caravans had disappeared near the northern road.

A guard reported that the ground sometimes trembled slightly before new creatures appeared.

Gu Yanshu did not react strongly to any of it. He simply listened, thanked them, and left.

By noon, he returned to the gate.

Lin Qiren was still there.

"You gathered information," Lin Qiren said.

"Yes."

"And?"

"The tunnels are unstable."

Lin Qiren crossed his arms. "Unstable how."

"Something large is moving underground."

Lin Qiren's expression grew serious.

Gu Yanshu continued calmly.

"If it continues, Area 900 will collapse within weeks."

Lin Qiren did not question the conclusion immediately. Instead, he looked toward the northern mountains, thinking.

"You want to investigate."

"Yes."

Lin Qiren studied him for several seconds.

"You are weaker than me."

"Yes."

"You still want to go."

"Yes."

Lin Qiren let out a quiet breath.

"Then we go together."

Gu Yanshu lowered his gaze slightly. "Thank you."

The decision was made naturally, without pressure or persuasion. It felt like the logical outcome of the situation.

That afternoon, they prepared.

Lin Qiren checked his spear and armor, while Gu Yanshu packed supplies and marked safe paths on the map. The preparation was careful and efficient, with each person handling what suited them best.

By sunset, they were ready.

The northern tunnels stood silent and dark, their entrances broken and uneven from years of neglect. Cold air flowed from inside, carrying the smell of damp stone and something heavier beneath it.

Lin Qiren stepped forward first.

Gu Yanshu followed behind.

Inside, the tunnels twisted like a maze, narrow paths leading deeper into the mountain. Water dripped from the ceiling, and faint vibrations moved through the ground, barely noticeable but constant.

Lin Qiren stopped.

"You feel that."

"Yes."

"Something is below us."

Gu Yanshu nodded.

They continued walking.

After several minutes, they reached a wide underground chamber. Broken carts and mining tools lay scattered across the ground, and deep claw marks covered the stone walls. At the center of the chamber, a large crack stretched downward into darkness.

The vibration was stronger here.

Lin Qiren stepped closer to the crack and looked down.

"Deep."

Gu Yanshu stood behind him, observing the walls and the marks carefully.

"They are not beast marks," he said.

Lin Qiren turned slightly. "Then what."

"Tools."

Lin Qiren frowned.

"Someone dug this," Gu Yanshu continued calmly.

The realization settled slowly.

Not creatures.

Not natural movement.

Someone had been working underground.

Lin Qiren's grip tightened on his spear. "A hidden group."

"Yes."

"Using beasts to clear the town."

"Yes."

Lin Qiren stepped back from the crack, thinking carefully now.

"If Area 900 is emptied, this place becomes a hidden base."

Gu Yanshu said nothing.

Lin Qiren looked at him.

"You already considered this before coming here."

Gu Yanshu met his gaze calmly. "It was a possibility."

Lin Qiren let out a quiet laugh.

"You are careful."

"Yes."

Lin Qiren walked around the chamber slowly, studying the claw marks and broken tools.

"If this is true, we cannot attack blindly."

"Yes."

"We need more information."

"Yes."

Lin Qiren stopped and looked at him again.

"You want to lure them out."

Gu Yanshu paused slightly before answering.

"They will come out eventually."

Lin Qiren smiled faintly.

"That is not an answer."

Gu Yanshu lowered his eyes slightly.

"If the town looks weak, they will act faster."

Lin Qiren nodded slowly.

"A trap."

"Preparation."

Lin Qiren rested his spear on his shoulder.

"You want me to stay visible in the town while you observe."

Gu Yanshu did not deny it.

Lin Qiren laughed quietly.

"You are interesting, Gu Yanshu."

The chamber fell silent again.

Lin Qiren walked toward the exit.

"Fine," he said. "We return and prepare."

Gu Yanshu followed him out of the tunnel.

As they stepped back into the evening light, Area 900 looked peaceful again, unaware of what was hidden beneath it.

Lin Qiren stopped near the entrance and looked back at the mountain.

"If there really is a hidden force here," he said, "they will make a move soon."

Gu Yanshu looked at the quiet streets of the town, watching people walk and talk as if nothing had changed.

"Yes," he said softly.

And in his calm expression, there was already a quiet calculation forming—one that would slowly turn the hidden enemy's own plan into a path that led directly into their hands without them realizing it until it was too By the time they returned to Area 900, the sky had darkened into a low gray-blue that made the rooftops look older than they were. The town was quieter than before, but not peaceful. It had the strained stillness of a place that knew danger was under the ground and had decided, for the moment, not to ask where it was breathing from.

Lin Qiren walked beside Gu Yanshu without speaking for a while

It was not awkward silence. It was the silence of a man turning over a thought that had already changed shape once and was now changing again

At last he said, "You were right.

Gu Yanshu looked ahead. "About the tunnels?

"About the town being used.

Gu Yanshu gave no reaction

Lin Qiren's jaw tightened slightly. "If I had gone down there alone, I would have struck too early. The hidden group would have noticed.

"Yes.

Lin Qiren glanced at him. "You say that so easily.

"Because it is true.

"That is not what most people sound like when they are praised.

Gu Yanshu's pace did not change. "I was not praising you.

Lin Qiren laughed once, short and quiet, but there was no real humor in it. "No. You were doing something more annoying.

"What is that?

"Making me think.

Gu Yanshu turned his head just enough to meet his eyes. "That is useful.

Lin Qiren looked away first

They reached the inn near the eastern lane as lanterns began to glow one by one across the street. The owner, a thin man with a scar on his hand, barely looked up when they entered. In places like Area 900, people asked fewer questions than they should and noticed more than they admitted

The room Gu Yanshu had taken earlier was small, plain, and cold. A wooden table, two stools, one bed, one window with a cracked frame. It was enough. Lin Qiren set his spear against the wall and stood near the center of the room, as if unused to being indoors for too long

Gu Yanshu poured water into two cups

Lin Qiren accepted one and drank slowly

The room remained quiet until Gu Yanshu said, "You have been carrying something.

Lin Qiren's fingers paused around the cup

"What makes you say that?

"You fight like someone who already accepted the cost of losing.

Lin Qiren looked at him for a long time, then lowered himself onto the stool with a tired exhale. "My younger brother died two years ago.

Gu Yanshu said nothing

Lin Qiren stared at the cup in his hand. "He was not strong. Not even enough to protect himself properly. But he ran anyway when bandits attacked the convoy we were guarding. He thought he could save the driver's daughter.

Gu Yanshu waited

Lin Qiren's voice remained level, but the edge underneath it had softened. "He died for people who did not even know his name.

A pause

Then he added, "I have been telling myself ever since that strength is only useful if it can be given to the right person.

Gu Yanshu set his own cup down

"Then give it where it matters," he said

Lin Qiren looked up

Gu Yanshu's tone stayed calm. "Not to people who praise courage and forget the dead. Not to towns that remember fear only after it arrives. Give it to something that will remain after you are gone.

Lin Qiren did not speak

Gu Yanshu continued, quieter now, "Most people want strength because they want to win. You want it because you do not want the wrong people to disappear.

The room felt smaller after that sentence

Lin Qiren's shoulders lowered a fraction. He looked down, then laughed under his breath with the roughness of someone trying not to show how much a few words had reached him. "You say things strangely.

"Do they matter?

"Yes.

"Then that is enough.

Lin Qiren fell silent again, but this time it was different. The wall he had been holding up did not break. It simply loosened

Outside, footsteps passed in the corridor. Another room opened and shut. A distant argument rose briefly, then faded. Normal sounds. The kind that would have meant nothing in any other town

A knock came at the door

Lin Qiren turned automatically, hand moving toward his spear

Gu Yanshu did not move

The knock came again, and before either of them could answer, the door slid open

A young man stepped inside with a look of irritation that seemed to have settled into him permanently. He had travel dust on his boots, a faded shoulder wrap, and the sort of face that usually belonged to someone who had survived too many long roads to bother pretending to be polite. Behind him stood a girl carrying a wrapped bundle under her arm, her eyes alert and her posture careful

The young man looked at Lin Qiren first. "You disappeared for half a day.

Lin Qiren's expression shifted into something closer to annoyance. "T.A.R., you're loud.

"Because you make me look for you." He turned his gaze to Gu Yanshu. "And who is this?

Gu Yanshu stood, not too quickly, not too slowly. "Gu Yanshu.

T.A.R. looked him over once. "You're the one who helped Qiren with the beast?

"Yes.

The girl behind him glanced at Gu Yanshu and then at Lin Qiren, saying nothing

T.A.R. folded his arms. "He usually doesn't need help.

Lin Qiren gave him a flat look. "That is not true.

"It is when I say it.

The girl let out a tiny breath that might have been amusement

Gu Yanshu noticed it

He also noticed the way T.A.R. had stood between the girl and the doorway without thinking about it, and the way the girl had not once looked nervous despite the fact that she had entered a stranger's room at night. They knew each other. More importantly, they trusted each other enough to argue in front of one another

That made them useful in different ways

T.A.R. pointed at Gu Yanshu. "What are you doing in Area 900?

"Passing through.

"You do not look like a passerby.

"That is probably because I am not.

T.A.R. stared for a beat, then snorted. "At least you're honest.

The girl finally spoke. Her voice was light but careful. "He is not always honest.

T.A.R. looked offended. "I am deeply honest.

"You lied to the caravan keeper this morning.

"I omitted details.

"That is lying with manners.

Lin Qiren rubbed his forehead. "Why are you two here?

T.A.R. dropped the argument instantly and turned serious. "Because we heard about the tunnel movements. And because someone in town is paying out of pocket for beast parts. That usually means someone is trying to hide what the beasts were carrying.

The girl shifted the bundle in her arms and placed it on the table. "I also brought medicine.

Gu Yanshu looked at the bundle, then at her. "For wounds?

"For poison traces, maybe.

"Maybe?

She met his gaze. "You sound like someone who already knows there is poison involved.

Gu Yanshu gave the smallest pause

T.A.R. noticed it

His eyes narrowed. "What did you find?

"A dug chamber," Gu Yanshu said. "Old. Hidden. Someone has been using the tunnel lines under the town.

T.A.R. stopped smiling. "How far down?

"Enough to make the town collapse if they keep moving.

That changed the room

Lin Qiren straightened

The girl's hand tightened around the medicine cloth

T.A.R. looked at Gu Yanshu for a moment longer than before, his earlier casualness gone. "You say that like it's normal.

"It's not normal.

"Then why are you calm?

Gu Yanshu answered with the same quiet tone he always used when the truth was more useful than drama. "Because panic does not help the people already standing above the ground.

T.A.R. stared at him, and for once his mouth did not move immediately

The girl looked between them. "You knew about the collapse risk and still came back here.

"Yes.

"Why?

Gu Yanshu turned to the window. Outside, lanterns moved across the street, tiny and distant. "Because the people digging below the town are not the only ones who will move when they think the town is weak.

Lin Qiren understood first. "You want them to come out.

"Yes.

T.A.R. leaned against the wall slowly. "That is either very smart or very stupid.

"It is usually both," the girl said

That earned her a glance and then, unexpectedly, a faint smile from Gu Yanshu

T.A.R. noticed the smile and frowned. "You don't smile much.

"Neither do you.

"I'm told I'm dazzling.

"You are loud," the girl said

"That is almost the same thing.

Lin Qiren gave a short laugh despite himself, and the tension in the room loosened by a thread

Gu Yanshu watched that thread carefully

This was the part that mattered. Not the jokes. Not the noise. Not the easy back-and-forth. The important thing was that Lin Qiren had brought T.A.R. and the girl here because he trusted them, and because they trusted him enough to arrive without demanding explanations. People who arrive together often become tied together by the same danger, and once danger is shared, words become heavier

Gu Yanshu turned slightly toward T.A.R

"You came because you thought Qiren was alone," he said

T.A.R. blinked once. "He is.

"No," Gu Yanshu said. "He was. That is different.

The room became quiet again

T.A.R. looked at Lin Qiren. Then back at Gu Yanshu. Then, very slowly, he frowned as if he had just realized there was a shape to the night that he had not been shown

The girl noticed too

She asked, softly now, "What do you mean by that?

Gu Yanshu's tone did not change. "I mean people don't remain alone unless they choose it. If he brought you here, then he already decided the burden should not stay on one person.

Lin Qiren turned his head slightly, as if about to argue, but stopped

T.A.R. went quiet

The girl's expression shifted by a fraction. Not trust yet. Not that quickly. But interest. Enough

That was how it began

Not with power

Not with orders

With a few words placed at the right point, where regret, loyalty, and the need to protect someone already existed

Outside, somewhere under the town, something moved again in the hidden dark

Inside the room, four people remained standing in different pieces of the same silence, each one thinking they had arrived for their own reasons, each one already stepping into a shape Gu Yanshu had quietly made room for......""...""....."."""..""""""".""""..."""".."""""""""""""""""....""".""""""....""""."."...".".".""".".....""""""""""."""...
